Mueller APV 4.5-14x40mm seems to be the most popular scope for the target shooters on rimfirecentral. I personally just have a fixed 4x on mine for plinking.

Mueller APV 4-14x40 which is finger adjustable under the caps for $108 or Meuller APT which has target turrets for $169. These are very well regarded budget scopes.

The three most suggested scopes, first is for a lower budget:

Simmons

Nikon Rimfire Prostaff

Mueller APV

Also I agree with the "start with a cheap scope and move up" mentality.

This is actually a decent starting scope: http://www.opticsplanet.net/leapers-utg-1in-4-16x40mm-full-size-ao-mil-dot-rgb-zero-locking-resetting-riflescope.html (~$60-65 w/ discounts and fs)

Even comes with flip up lens covers.

I also note that I would suggest: http://www.amazon.com/Mueller-APV-4-5-14x40-AOScope/dp/B000SULCTA

Instead of your choices. You can get it for less elsewhere (~$110-115). Also always google for coupon codes.

This is what I have on mine, it has adjustable objective too, best of luck! https://www.amazon.com/Mueller-Rifle-Scope-Black-4-5-14/dp/B000SULCTA

I have one of these on the way, when it comes in my 10/22 target rifle will be complete. I also added a Green Mountain match barrel, a Mueller scope and a Kidd trigger. I have a stash of Eley match ammo, so I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with it.

EDIT oh and a plastic replacement bolt stop pin.

Mueller APV 4.5-14x Scope for my Ruger 10/22.

Now I need to find a scope mounting system to make my reticle level. I have had the worst luck trying myself so far.

My usual answer for someone seeking a budget scope: the Mueller Optics APV or APT. Lots of bang for the buck. The APV has a 1" tube, the APT has a 30mm tube. The APV:

The APT:

ETA: The Muellers have adjustable parallax.

This is probably at the top end of what you'd want to spend but from what I have heard it is well worth it.

Here are the two scopes I am talking about

Nikon

Mueller

For a 22, you probably want something with an adjustable objective. This is a fixed objective which means you will likely have some parallax error inside 100 yards. If you are planning to only shoot at 100 yards with your 22, this would be a fine scope.

If you think you are likely to shoot closer, I recommend looking at this scope it is a great 22 scope for the money, from my experience. You may be able to find it cheaper than on Amazon.

This is a Mueller scope 4.5-14 x 40mm that I’ve been using on a Remington 700 chambered in .223. The glass is really clear for the price and I’ve had no issue pinging 8” steel plates at 200 yards consistently, which is unfortunately the longest range I have near me. And really any 1” rings will get the job done with the proper torque applied, a simple $20 set will work fine for most uses.

Alternatively you could look into the Vortex Crossfire II series of scopes but they are pretty close to the $200-$250 range.

I used Leupold 11mm rmifire rings on both of my 455's. Be sure that you get HIGH rings... You are going to need it for the bolt handle to clear
