I recommend Laurie R. King's Mary Russell series starting with The Beekeeper's Apprentice, which re-imagines Sherlock Holmes after his retirement, when he meets a young woman who matches his intellect and takes her on as protege. Within Agatha Christie's canon, perhaps you could try Murder on the Orient Express as an intro to Hercule Poirot, or for an intro to Miss Marple I recommend A Pocket Full of Rye or A Murder is Announced. Good luck!
Her books definitely don't need to be read in any order! I usually just pick them up as I see them crop up in used bookstores. I'd recommend her Hercule Poirot series, particularly books like The Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, or The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. These are what got me first started!
