I have RCN and bought a NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 (24x8) modem/router combo earlier this year from Amazon. There apparently is a newer model of this modem, but the one I have now has given me zero problems. More than anything, it just depends on what speed you’re signing up for.

Link in case you want it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZUPOF7Y?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Spectrum doesn't officially support D4 modems, yet.

I just moved into a place and my roommate had a shitty old modem that couldn't support me watching HD Youtube videos without restarting the modem. I was getting a max of 10d/1u on the 100d/10u connection.

I bought a Netgear Nighthawk modem (https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-Certified-Xfinity-Spectrum/dp/B00ZUPOF7Y) and Google Wifi pods and stuck them around the apartment. Fixed the shit wifi signal and terrible speeds.

Buy this for your internet needs...

As for the cable box, you can go with TiVo... Far better user experience

u/Kirko_bangz · 2 pointsr/cordcutters

I've always heard "don't get a combo" but you know what... I've have zero issues with this:

7,000 reviews and 4 out of 5 stars. Pay a bit more now, and save yourself the headaches of running into issues.

u/missingtasks · 2 pointsr/pcgaming

The old modem may be your bottleneck on speeds depending on how many channels and what docsis version it is. You may want to get a decent, semi-future proofed all in in one like the Nighthawk. $200 seems like a lot but when you do the math it pays for itself in about a year and a half. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-Certified-Xfinity-Comcast/dp/B00ZUPOF7Y/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1474570202&sr=8-6&keywords=nighthawk

Yea sorry, meant to be more clear. I was originally using the 2 in 1 comcast router & modem, which was on lease for $10 a month. I went and bought a new one which is installed and works fine, but the latency issue has not gone away.

With the old router/modem or the new router/modem, I get the same speeds but also the same fluctuating latency problem.

Hi,
yes, Separate modem + Router is always better than Combo devices but it also depends on your needs and use-cases
read this link and see where you land: http://pickmymodem.com/cable-modem-wi-fi-modem-router-combo-one-buy/
for Suggestions om Combo devices: 1. C7000 AC1900 is pretty good http://amzn.to/2nbGF21 2. Motorola MG7550 is good as well and I have seen many good reviews http://amzn.to/2nB50PR
Both of these are Broadcom based and dont have latency issue which has plagued Puma6. Dont buy Low power WIFI Combos as you will regret later.
If you have high budget, I suggest you go separate modem + Separate Router
Modems: http://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-xfinity-internet-service/
SB6183 (http://amzn.to/2minyUV) OR CM600 (http://amzn.to/2mG4zPi) are good choices
Routers: NETGEAR R7000 AC1900 (http://amzn.to/2qnhZG2) OR TPLink Archer C9 (http://amzn.to/2pRApP3)
Mesh??: Do you want Best WIFI range and have budget? then go for MESH WIFI systems: 1. NETGEAR Orbi RBK50 Kit http://amzn.to/2pq1ojA 2. Google MESH WIFI system http://amzn.to/2qmYqO7

I was looking at the wrong nighthawk.

What I'm talking about is this one.

u/Dagonzaros · 1 pointr/techsupport

If you're using Plex to stream then a full 1080p stream being streamed outside your home could saturate your whole 8mbps upload.

I also use comcast and bought my own router, I know that the modem you're using has a history of having abhorrent wireless capabilities.
I use this: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-Certified-Xfinity-Comcast/dp/B00ZUPOF7Y

If you want a modem/router combo: AC1900 Nighthawk

If you want one modem and one router: Arris SURFboard SB6141 and NETGEAR N750

u/grokdesigns · 1 pointr/phoenix

I’ve been partial to the Netgear CM series (I’d recommend CM600 and up for future proofing).

Saw you wanted a combo. I would never recommend an all in one because I don't like putting all of my technological eggs in one basket, per se. Keep in mind that combo units capable of supporting the latest wireless technologies and supporting higher near future internet speeds are quite pricey.

Personally, I have a separate modem, router, and wireless access point. That way, if a year from now some hot new WiFi technology comes out that I want, or my modem dies, I'm not paying to replace all of that technology just to upgrade or replace one component. At the minimum, I'd separate the modem and router/WAP. For those, I'd recommend Netgear CM600 and up for the modem and I found the TP-Link Archer C7 a reasonably priced router/WAP that functioned well.

If you absolutely must have an all in one unit, it looks like this Netgear is fairly solid in terms of both supported internet speed and WiFi technology.

Always buy your own you can get better equipment that will last longer and you can pick your equipment. Get a two in one or you can get a separate modem and router and choose. you can get a cheap router that will get you by or get a super high end one that will last you years. average modem rentals 10 bucks a month so its 120 bucks a year. just for the rental.

This modem is 100 bucks and would be paid for in 10 months and probably last at least five years its a docsis 3.0 modem so it wont support full gigabit speed tho.

https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6190-DOCSIS-Cable/dp/B016PE1X5K

This modem is 165.00 and would be paid off in about a year and a half if you were renting instead and again will last at least five years if not longer and supports a gigabit connection so its somewhat future proof if your looking for gig speeds.

https://www.amazon.com/Next-Generation-ARRIS-SURFboard-SB8200-DOCSIS/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1M3SXVEACP6Y3&keywords=docsis+3.1+modem&qid=1557088051&s=gateway&sprefix=docsis+3.1%2Caps%2C220&sr=8-4

This is a decent two in one modem router combo for about 170 bucks it doesnt support gigabit speed but you wont have to shell out for a separate router.

https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-Certified-Xfinity-Spectrum/dp/B00ZUPOF7Y/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=modem+router&qid=1557088296&s=gateway&sr=8-7

The only time i would recommend renting is if you have absolutely no idea how any tech or wifi works and you just need it to work like magic. If your techie or like performance or know anything about modems or routers or you like getting under the hood and playing with settings get your own and save some money.

So you say duel band so it sounds like you are looking for a gateway. This is a modem router combo. You have a few options. If you buy of Amazon you could get this one. It's 200 but is a 3.0 modem with a duel band ac wireless router built in. Supports 24 downstream channels and 8 up. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZUPOF7Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ZzWnzbRC6T09V

If you are looking to save some money you could get this one, it's 100 and supports 8 down and 4 up. This would work with the 150 Meg tier but I recommend getting the higher channel one to future proof yourself. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IF0JAYE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_PCWnzbFRR986G

Cox in my area does sell this one below. They charge around 170 or so for it( not sure don't quote me). On Amazon it's 180. It supports 32 down and 8 up. If you buy from Cox it has a 2 year warranty and they will come swap it out if it goes bad. It says on Amazon Arris gives it a 2 year warranty also but you would have to ship it to them I assume.

Stand alone modems are different because you need a router to plug into it to get wifi. If you are interested in a 3.1 modem prepare to spend around 200 for it. They don't make docsis 3.1 gateways yet that I know of. Cox doesn't even use docsis 3.1 yet in any market but will be kicking it on within a year or so in select areas. The docsis 3.1 modems that you can buy today are backwards compatible with 3.0 and support 32 down and 8 up. I know I talk a lot about the channels down and up. This is how many different cable channels the modem can connect to at once. More is better because If one gets congested it reroutes packets down another that isn't. This helps maintain speed even during peak hours and also how they deliver the faster speeds.

Cox also sells Arris stand-alone docsis 3.1 modems for 179.99 and it comes with a 1 year warranty through Cox. It has 2 Ethernet ports on the back. Don't be wierded out by that it's for multi gigabit services in the future and only one will work today.

If you have any other questions let me know and I will try to answer the best I can.

Hey thanks again for the quick reply.

Once my computer is built, then I will look into the extensions and smaller things to make it look better, unless you have any brands or types off the top of your head. Like you said for the few wires that will show, it really isn't worth a basic kit after looking into it. Great tip!

Looking into the case fans I see what you mean about the noise vs the actual performance. I think those fans will suit me just great! Cool to see those videos about just how little of a difference it would make for me and I would have been sacrificing noise for pretty much no more performance. Good deal!

As for the routers. I used that wifi analyzer and surprisingly it is a lot worse than I thought. My signal is still the strongest but I have about 4 or 5 other people operating on the same exact channels as me under the 2.4G tab. Looking under the 5G tab, it was blank. Absolutely nobody. So I think I'll go with the 5G router! But I do have an issue. The modem and router I have are all in one unit. It is a modem/router combo. So I would have to get a modem as well. Any suggestions? Should I get a separate modem and router or should I get a combined unit? Just for extra information, my router doesn't need to push too far or go through many walls to get to me. I still like to have it broadcast a good ways so I can use the wifi on my phone when out in the backyard, but as far as reaching where my pc will go, it will be about 15 feet away going through two walls (non insulated walls). It is set up in my living room towards the center of the apartment and I get good signal as it is. Just need it to perform better I guess because I guess the issue is that the router (or modem?) gets flooded easily when searching for servers in a game. That is when it just cuts off my internet in the game and I have to exit the game, then I am back to normal. Just plain weird but that is the only thing I've found online that fits exactly what happens to me when I try to load servers on bigger games like KF2.

Also, I have no experience what so ever when it comes to setting up a modem or router. What do I need to do? I know I want the 5G frequency and the channels don't matter because no one else is on that frequency at all. Do I just plug in the new modem and router (or modem/router combo) and just let it do its thing? Will my network name stay the same or will I have to set up an entirely new network?

I said I don't want to spend a ton of money on this but what I meant was like some super $500 wifi system that I can't even take advantage of without extreme internet speed haha.

This one is expensive in my opinion but has great reviews.
https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-AC1900-DOCSIS-C7000-100NAS/dp/B00ZUPOF7Y/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1452701417&sr=1-22&keywords=modem+router+combo&linkCode=sl1&tag=nerdtechy-20&linkId=60570f3ee7b22a14bc2b80874b4f9578

But this one on the other hand is cheaper and also has great reviews.

https://www.amazon.com/SURFboard-SBG6782AC-DOCSIS-AC1750-Router/dp/B00GJ7Y7MU/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&tag=nerdtechy-20&linkId=fd7024bf66add45962bc8e4ca9c36b75

Ideally, I'd like to spend a little less than that, but I will if it means not having to mess with it again. I'm not sure what speeds are ideal for normal gaming nowadays but I know that the games I play now work alright, maybe laggy once in a while but it could also just be my computer. For now, I'd just like to swap out the modem and router so I no longer have to deal with copying ip addresses just to join servers on bigger games. Then in the future if I wish to up my internet speed for whatever reason, I know the router and modem can handle it. And with this new computer, I'll have all my bases covered! Let me know what you think!

Very happy with this Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 Modem/Router Combo. I pay for TWC's 300mbps and consistently get ~330. Wireless performance has been excellent. Have not needed a reboot since installation 3 weeks ago. Tech had no trouble activating it. It is on the compatibility list. Con: It is one of the most expensive currently available.

u/xFlawless11x · 1 pointr/cordcutters

I'm moving soon and was looking into this a well (not for WoW just in general) and this came up as one of the top modem/router combos. Link
