Specs:
You can plug in a standard USB stick using an OTG adapter into the back of the current Nexus Player. Marshmallow's Adoptable storage helps a lot! (of course, built-in would be great; but I think I'd rather it stayed cheap)
 
PS: I have one of these and I have a 360 controller as well as a 32Gb USB stick plugged into it. This all works out of the box, btw. No need for any custom ROM's, root, tweaks, whatever.

Hopefully it works. I'd like to control my nexus player with my harmony one remote (no bluetooth), so I got one of these:
