I just thought I would share my gunroom converted from an extra bedroom for anyone out there looking for some inspiration. I’ll try to provide a full breakdown for anybody that needs some more things to put on their Christmas list this year.

The Sturdy Safe was the best and most budget-friendly safe option I could find. It’s not the prettiest but it doesn’t need to be for my purposes. This is the 1148-6 model without fire liner and the #2 standard rack that fits 60 long guns.

You definitely will want some sort of lighting system for your safe. I rigged up some LED strip lights from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005EHHLD8/) and used a staple gun to secure them to the underside of the shelves. It could be done a lot neater if you want to cut and solder the LEDs but this way still looks fine when you’re looking at it from standing height. The precut hole in the back of the safe is not very big so I bought a electric outlet, box and wire from the hardware store and rigged up an electric outlet inside the safe. Some type of switch for the lights would be nice but as of right now I just plug and unplug it from the wall.

I keep an extra gun cabinet next to the safe with a couple shotguns that are beyond repair and some cheap air guns. I figure a “smash-and-grab” type thief might go for the easiest target so it creates a little diversion. A Foscam IP camera and a dedicated motion-sensor connected to the alarm give me additional peace of mind.

The work-bench is just an old IKEA desk I was no longer using. It’s not the most sturdy but it does the job.

Haha I am actually giving it to my sister who is in college for Christmas. I am really tempted to make a similar purse for myself, but Christmas presents were first priority. To my understanding, he soldered an LED strip (red for better night vision) similar to this, to a switch like this one. and then to a USB. The USB plugs into a battery that can also be used to charge a phone or tablet. There is also a little microcontroller circuit that is needed to keep the battery from going to sleep (which makes the switch useless) that I don't really understand. So unfortunately you need a bit of circuit design and soldering experience. My advice: find a nerd!

A few options for simulating neon signs are EL Wire and LED strips (One example from Amazon).
A few pros and cons of each:


LED Strips:

• LED strips can be dimmed, however EL cannot (easily).
  
• LED strips come in many more colors and can even be purchased in RGB format so you can color change them.
  
• They are typically 12VDC and need a transformer, however computer PSUs can be used.
  
• Typically cheaper than EL wire
  
• Can be bent along the length of the strip, however cannot really do tight turns where the leds are facing outwards.
  
• Good for making even diffuse light boxes
  
  EL Wire:
  
  
• EL is more flexible in all directions than LED strips, however it is less bright, especially in direct light.
  
• Requires an inverter
  
• Looks more like neon, as there are not individual point sources.
  
• Can easily be battery powered, with even just 2 AAs for small lengths. (though there are inverters for wall power too)
  
• Can be purchased in different diameters and forms (like tiny wire to big wire and also small panels.

-I wired them so they can be off, on all the time, or on whenever the headlights are. The picture doesn't show the true color, which is a really deep purple.

I bought this LED Strip and a toggle switch. Tapped off the power coming to my tonneau cover that was going to a crappy bulb light. This is much better. I was testing with a 12v battery before I put in the switch.

I've been checking on Shapeways for a 3D printed keyboard case (keeping fingers crossed for an ergonomic layout, like the Atreus).

I was thinking it would be possible to use a LED strip combined with a Gateron switches to provide backlighting without soldering in individual LEDs for each switch. In theory the light might be able to travel through the switch itself.

Do you have plans on putting the design on Shapeways?

My band's logo is just bold white text on a black background. Might see if I can get a white head and paint it black so I can get the light to show through the logo. I have tangerine glitter drums so maybe orange lights would look cool...

The LEDs installed real easy, the adhesive is strong and I've not had any problems in 6 months of use

For the base we started out with a piece of wood that was about 6 inches wide and 9 inches long. Then, used the router to get the edge like a plaque, and then again to get the cut down the middle to allow the LED's and PlexiGlass(Acrylic) to sit. We also cut a into the back to allow the 9V to sit. Then, we sanded and sanded some more. After that we stained with Mohangany 225 and then we put a glossy coat over it. After all that we drilled through the center cut into the battery spot in the back to allow the LED's to run through. We then soldered the 9V snap contect to the LED's. We used strip ones like these. (We only had the option of red, blue, green or white though. However we could have brought in others if we really wanted) After we fed the wire through the hole and soldered it, we took off the thing on the back so it the adhesive side was out. And then we just got it in the cut down the middle. (Real pain in the butt)

For the design on the acrylic, we used a laser engraver at my school. We created or found a design that would be suitable (like a 1 layer stencil almost or an outline, not multiple colors and layers, though someone may be able to do that, I dunno.) And we just put the design in a 9in x 9in on Adobe Illustrator on the laptops our school gave to use, expanded and reflected it. And then my teacher took it from there and hooked it up to the laser engraver and did her thing. And there it was! Now all I had to do was slide it in to the cut we made.

If you are using 3 23" monitors like I am doing, you will need about 4meters of the strip, but you can cut the remaining meter off to make it fit ;)

They are a little blueish but still white. the tough part was when you cut the strip to the desired length you have to solder wire to the strip and it's a tiny plate surface.

These(or similar) with this over it! Make it flush with the ceiling on one side or all sides of the room. You could also get a flat version of that to put along floorboards in hallways, and all you'd need to keep it up is some small screws. That's all I can do to help!

Either that of you could just find some paper lantern covers for your lights and put them on each bulb.

When I saw this I thought about a project I had completed using edge lighting with LED strips (literally LEDS in a strip, an example: http://www.amazon.com/Triangle-Bulbs-T93007-Waterproof-Flexible/dp/B005EHHLD8), since it looks like the LEDs in the housing are LED strips. So I was going to make my suggestion.

I definitely think that EL Tape would look way nicer for less work, but I had a lot of fun with an edge-lit piece I made last summer, so I thought I should at least recommend it in case OP thought it was cool too.

I like that for both painting and photography. Might have to build it.

It looks like you can get the lights, ballast/AC adapater and a remote/connector for like 25 bucks.

The cheapest option would be to get an old laptop and pull the lcd assembly off the unit, then take the actual LCD part out, leaving the backlight and distributor panel, then power the inverter with a wall wart and use that.

You can build one of those yourself if you like but unless you really want to solder in 528 LEDs I'd just use an LED SMD strip and a driver for it. Such as this.

Borrow/buy (and return) an inverter. The catch with inverters is that you only get 120v (assuming you're in the US like everyone else on the Internet) when the engine is off thus only pulling from the battery. When the engine is running the voltage fluctuates a lot and usually doesn't rise above 45v. Now, if you have a 12v source this shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure why everyone wants to light the whole cabin for dawn, it's certainly not my flavor for this setting. I would tape aluminum foil over the surface of the speedometer and get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005EHHLD8/ref=redir_mdp_mobile

Tack as much as you want to the foil, cut to length, cover with 216 or heavy diffusion/color, shape with black paper tape. Shoot on a route with a lot of sky or urban lighting and you're set.

I think I could do all of this with an arduino (maybe a mega?) and an mp3 shield. Send the audio to a small mono DC amp. (Any suggestions?)

I need to be able to dim and brighten the LEDs in the lamp, windows and "POLICE BOX" sign. The lamp would be driven vu-style by feeding back the mp3 shield audio signal back to the analog in on the arduino.

The windows I just want to slightly pulse with dimming, so I could do that with a simulated slow sine wave (except I think I only get 8 levels so there might be some aliasing issues -- maybe I could overlap groups.)

The sign I want to simulate the flicker of an old, failing florescent tube, so mostly on with bouts of random flashing.

Do I need anything else to drive the LEDs from the arduino? I don't think it's got enough power, so wouldn't I have to feed that signal into something else to actually drive the strips?

Edit: I got it, you even mentioned it: use a MOFSET. I'm looking at this tutorial.

Thanks for the tip, I forgot they made light kits for my style of chrony. I do have 5-6 feet of some LED Lightstrip left over from another project. I'll tape it to the tops of the diffuser-thingys and see if that works.

Sweet Christmas that is an awesome chrony. You're totally right, for another $180 that lab radar is totally worth it. Although there are some negative youtube video reviews where it has trouble picking up shots.

as you can see, my setup is far from completed, I have a 4 switch relay, to control led strip lighting and fans, planning on hooking up printer power to it as well.

Also have a DHT11 thermometer, hooked up to monitor enclosure temp.

This is what you're looking for. LED Light Strip - 12V they're about as simple as you can get. If you want to get fancy, you can make a barrel jack connector for you 12V battery and run this with colors.

The application is for lighting an archery target with LED strips each night for ~3-4 hours a night to allow the range to stay open. This is in central california so there is plenty of sun during the day and nights aren't excessively long. I feel like the sealed lead acid battery will cause problems due to the low number (200-300) charge cycles they can go through. What do you mean by saying the 12v battery is not 12v? I feel like I won't need a 30W solar panel but I'm not sure. I will most likely use a store bought charge controller like mrCloggy suggested, but I'm wondering if I can wire that up to the lipo battery. way too expensive. I'd go with this it prob takes about 2-3 amps to run the whole strip very bright, so youd need 12v ~3ah battery, which you can get from a rechargable drill battery.

Defiantly some better lighting, LED Lighting for behind the bed and desk. Spotlights are also available pretty cheap for brighter lightning to cover the whole room.
Also some canvas art for the walls would be an improvement, you can get some nice prints for about $10-$20
For that empty space I would suggest some plants.
I don't really like the colors of the room either, like the red bed covers don't go with that wall color.

I'll answer for him, it's part of a kit you can buy. You basically by a long strip of LEDs and then cut it to size. Then connect power to it.

Get an LED strip with 3258 or 5050 leds like this

You will have to cut it into strips and then solder them together. You can then power it from a molex plug from your PSU. If you're not comfortable with soldering (it's an easy job this one, good for beginners to learn), you'll want a strip with a molex connecter pre-soldered.

I have these strips (requires a power supply like this) plugged into one of these (they used to be ~$30) as under-cabinet lighting in my kitchen. I don't have it motion-activated, but just add a SmartThings motion detector and you'd be able to accomplish your goal easily enough.

Do you really need it to be part of your SmartThings setup, though? You could just get one of these and have what you're looking to accomplish even cheaper.
