The general understanding of O'Brien's relationship to Joyce is less of a like and dislike and more of the fact that O'Brien was essentially dogged by the clear influence of Joyce on his first novel (At Swim-Two-Birds) for his entire life. But he had good relationships with a number of his contemporaries who remind living in Ireland with him. However, his personal relationships suffered a lot as he got older due to a serious drinking problem. If you are interested more I can suggest Anthony Cronin.

Its a very entertaining biography (even if Cronin's bio of Beckett is both more in depth and critically regarded)
Either way its quite hard to really get a good understanding of O'Brien's relationships from his own writing because so much of it is layered in sarcasm, self critique, and general contradiction (for god sake the man wrote letters to the editor about his column where he argued with himself).
I'm also sure that the first comment on this thread being about Joyce would drive him off the deep end of he was alive to see it.
That is a great wee book. His one on Flann O'Brien was very good too if you're interested in the man.
