The 15x15mm shin is the correct size but the thickness matters as well. I believe Phawx used a 1mm thick shim and there was a noticeable bump in the keyboard, I used a 0.8mm thick shim and it cools very well with a barely noticeable bump. There shouldn't be a problem using anything from 0.5 to 1mm, but I wouldn't go out of that range.

I wouldn't remove the joystick cables from the motherboard. They are tough to get aligned again when reconnecting them. Use some tape to hold them in place on the board.

Two specific things to keep in mind: there are two screws that hold the main board in that are shorter than the rest, note where you remove them from. Also watch the input selector switch when you're reinserting the main board, make sure it's aligned with the switch on the case.

Other than that you should be in good shape, it's not too tough of a mod. Just keep your screws organized, and take your time putting it back together and you'll be fine.

Also silver is not going to be worth the added cost. It does conduct better, but only marginally so. You can spend the extra money, but I'm not sure it's worth it. Copper is around $2.60/lb while silver is around $240/lb. While the conductivity of copper is 386 W/mk and silver is 407 W/mk. So you get an approx 5% increase in cooling for a nearly 100x increase in price.

Do you happen to have the width x height dimensions of that little valley between the SB heatsink and the top shield?

Wondering if these would be a good solution
