Now for my opinion, if your new and have a very limited understanding of how to do the swap do the good or better, those packages give you everything you need for the swap and have excellent customer service/technical help hotline. IF you can figure out how to do it and your have a spare usb laying around, and don't need to re-purpose your stock ps4 hard drive go with the best! Highly recommend the SSHD.

u/PS3s · 11 pointsr/PS3

I would not upgrade with an SSD. I'd use a hybrid drive, like one of these:

u/Eorlas · 10 pointsr/PS4

The new hard drive won't have the system software installed, so you will need to follow Sony's instructions on how to copy that over to a USB drive so the system will recognize it, and be able to install it.

If you need the video for comfort, just search youtube for something like "swap ps4 hard drive." But Sony's instructions are actually really well done for this, and in a nutshell:

-Slide off the left top cover

-Take out the one screw that has the PS geometry symbols on it

-Slide out the hard drive bay

-Unscrew the hard drive mounting screws on either side

-Slide your hard drive in (that's what she said) and reverse the process

If you buy drives that are 2.5", they'll fit right in, but are more expensive the bigger they get in storage capacity. If you buy the Nyko hard drive bay it allows you to install 3.5" drives which can also go much bigger for less money, but it also adds some bulk to your PS4 (search for it and see pictures.)

Note that you have the options of installing either an HDD, SSHD, or an SSD. What's the difference? SSHDs and SSDs are faster, with SSDs being the fastest and you can get them in varying sizes and qualities (the speed differences between them can be significant as well.)

However, for the PS4 right now, only up to SATA 2 is supported (who the fuck knows why) so you can't really make amazing speeds happen anyway, thus an SSD is pointless. Someone did that research back when the PS4 was released, and an SSHD actually is a happy medium of not being stupidly expensive for not gaining much performance. Stick an SSD into your computer where it will do some angelic work.

I got this: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Gaming-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ?th=1

back when I first got my PS4 and I still use it to this day.

If you want more space and don't want to spend too much but also stay within the 2.5" realm as what fits standard in the PS4, you can search Amazon and other places but finding a 7200rpm drive in the 2.5" space is annoying.

You can go up to the 3.5" size, but again, that requires the Nyko accessory, so you've got your pros/cons there.

Message if you need more help.

u/JamMythOffender · 9 pointsr/PS4

I got this guy (1 TB, 5400 RPM):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B99JUBQ

I've been quite happy with it. Seems like I when I was researching the general consensus was to get a 5400 RPM. Slower speeds = cooler and the faster speeds did not make a big difference (from what I recall)

u/PunyParker826 · 9 pointsr/PS4

So does a SSD have any effect at all on a standard PS4? I've had one on my wishlist for a while, under the impression that it did.

u/Mercennarius · 6 pointsr/xboxone

I went with a 1TB Seagate Hybrid Drive:
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ

Pretty decent 2.5 drive that is under $100. There are definitely faster drives but this one works well especially if your looking to stay under $100.

u/TRDeadbeat · 6 pointsr/PS4

Don't get either one of those... get an SSHD:

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397497088&sr=8-1&keywords=seagate+sshd

That's the drive i have, and it runs like a champ. I am literally always the first player to load in BF4, and other games just seem more quick to load (though i don't have a point of reference like i do with BF)

u/Plsdontcreepme · 5 pointsr/ffxiv

Yes I highly recommend it. I'm always the first to load into any dungeon on PS4 with my SSHD even against most PC players (I check) and I definitely noticed a difference when teleporting with a friend who has the stock PS4 hard drive.

I'm using http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ, i've been using that for the 1TB space since I first got my PS4 since i'm going all digital this generation.

u/GroovyGrove · 5 pointsr/DestinyTheGame

It stands for solid-state drive. Instead of using magnetic disks that spin around, it uses flash memory which is a newer, faster technology (like a flash drive/thumb drive/SD card).

The disadvantage is that it's still much more expensive than a regular hard drive, although it has come down a lot lately. This is what I have. I did not upgrade the storage capacity of my console because I was using around half of it. I recommend checking this first in the settings under System.

If you need more space, a hybrid drive is something a lot of people do. These use a tradition disk drive but have a small amount of flash storage (usually 8GB) that holds the most frequently used data. This allows it to load all the data faster, including the stuff on the traditional disk. Here is a frequent choice for that. I've also seen a version I was considering that has 32GB of flash storage. I thought this would be better since Destiny is ~19GB. 32GB should be enough to store the system info for start up as well as all the regular Destiny files. Here is a link to that one. It falls right in the middle of these price points.

You can look up simple directions from Google pretty easily. You'll need a thumb drive to download the PS operating system to for install on the new drive. You'll also want to back up any game saves and other data from your original drive before you do the installation.

The speed jumps are not massive. You can look up some comparisons from a variety of sites and decide if this is for you. I played side-by-side with my brother over the weekend, and I could see the difference, but when your teammates all have to load the maps too, you're not really saving any time. It shaves off seconds. 15% maybe. So much of Destiny's loading time is network based that the benefits are smaller. Games like GTA with huge maps should benefit more.

u/nyteryder79 · 4 pointsr/PS4

The best bang for your buck will be a Seagate Laptop SSHD 1TB. They're on Amazon for only $107USD right now. They're nearly as fast as SSDs now (after you load something the first time because it caches to it's built in 8GB SSD), plus you get massively more storage for a very small fraction of the cost of an SSD. This is what I'm doing with my PS4. I have a Intel 520 120GB SSD in my PS3 now, but I plan on going digital with my games on PS4, so I need more storage space.

Here are some links that show what I'm talking about:

u/Rev_Up_Those_Reposts · 4 pointsr/PS3

Some Background for My Opinion:

I do both physical and digital. I probably have about 90 physical games and about 40 digital games (not including PSN and PS2/PSOne Classics). As others have said, physical games are often cheaper, given that you can buy them at used game stores, pawn shops, amazon, ebay, etc. Most of my physical games have been purchased between $4 and $10, with certain collections from around $15 to $20. Digital games, while normally very expensive, can be much cheaper during sales. I've had my PS3 since early 2014, and I've had many instances where I bought a game pretty cheap physically only to have it go on sale digitally few weeks later for even cheaper. And sometimes I even kick myself for buying a game digitally too early because it ends up on sale for even cheaper six months later. Some deals are downright ridiculous. I bought the Mass Effect Trilogy for $5. I recently saw the entire Modern Warfare trilogy, with the initial dlc's for all three games, for $15. This is especially cheap given that one of those dlc's is $15. It's not uncommon to have sales where game of the year bundles (game + dlc's) cost as much, if not less, than the dlc's, themselves. The current Mid Year Sale, ending tomorrow morning, offers many great examples of amazing deals. If I didn't already own many of those classic Sony games, I'd be all over it.

Overall, I'd say that I mostly buy the cheapest format that I can, with a preference towards physical copies when prices are similar. This preference has nothing to do with re-selling games (I'm somewhat of a collector), nor does it have to do with a desire to lend/give them away (I don't have many PS3-playing friends). My preference towards physical games comes from the fact that it is easier and more enjoyable to look at and select a physical game from a collection than to select a digital game from the hard drive. In all honesty, I almost always check my physical library before checking my digital one. That is one less-discussed draw-back of digital games: less visibility.

As far as storage goes, I picked up this [1 TB Seagate Hybrid Drive] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B99JUBQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I only had a 160 gb drive initially, so I was running out of space just from game installs/patches. A larger drive allowed me to not only download relevant patches and dlc but to more seriously purchase digital games, as well. For $75, it was a very worthwhile investment, especially given that the PS3 will very likely be my last console.

Physical vs Digital?

I'd say that it has more to do with what you are looking to get out of the PS3.

-Do you really like the feeling of looking at, selecting, and handling physical games?

-Do you like going to game stores and/or pawn shops?

-Would you like to lend games to friends and family?

-Do you appreciate the ability to return games that you don't like?

-Are you looking to eventually sell the console and the games?

If some or all of these are true, then physical games might be good for you.

____

-Do you want to be able to quickly and easily access your games from the couch?

-Do you want to be able to use the games in the event of a hard-drive failure?

-Do you have good internet access?

-Do you think you'd enjoy checking out the weekly deals on the Playstation Store?

-Are you willing to (potentially) invest in a larger hard drive?

-Do you not care about selling games (especially given low re-sale value)?

-Are you interested in keeping the console for the foreseeable future or even for as long as you can?

If some or all of these are true, then digital games might be the way to go.

__

Overall, maintaining an all-digital or all-physical library would likely end up being more expensive than a mix of the two. It's probably only really advisable if you prefer to not use a disc drive (with a strong preferences towards digital) or if you are an avid collector (with a strong preference for physical).

u/Dudew0 · 4 pointsr/PS4

You can do that. It's just a standard hard drive. I took the 500GB out of my ps4 and put it in my laptop. Also the hard drive that's recommended by /u/tubzgaming is the one that I put in my PS4. Here's a link to the american Amazon if you are in the US.

u/jucahe · 3 pointsr/PS4

Here. I have this one and it's amazing. The model number is ST1000LM014

u/bobloblaw148 · 3 pointsr/applehelp

I commented this once before but I also have a Mid-2010 MBP (although mine's the 13 inch) and I installed this hybrid drive into it back in February, and it works very well. I was considering going with a SSD, but since I ultimately needed more storage space and I don't have the dough to shell out to purchase a 500gb SSD, I went with this one. Much less expensive, but is a vast improvement from my original drive, which I believe was dying.

u/johnec4 · 3 pointsr/MaddenUltimateTeam

I bought this one. Easy to install. Cheap. $85 for 1TB

(if you buy the "used" amazon warehouse deal one (which I did) its even cheaper!)

Hey, not the OP but I upgraded to a 1TB SSHD a week after my PS4 arrived (I ordered it a bit late had hoped to just do it instantly). It is pretty simple, the SSHD I bought is this one. Here is a nice video that will show you exactly how to replace it once you have it.

u/YellowCBR · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

SSHD = Solid State Hybrid Drive = HDD with a small SSD. Saying a 1TB SSHD is correct.

Like this: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ

u/j-mt · 3 pointsr/buildapc

A 500GB SSD is an incredible upgrade, but it's ungodly expensive.

Have you considered a hybrid drive? I've used the 500GB and am currently using the 750GB Seagate Momentus XT. It cache's your most frequently used programs and start-up information on an SSD. The rest performs like a HDD.

It's not as fast as a pure SSD, but I think it would give you more of what you're looking for at a better price with more storage.

The 1TB version is $120 @ Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B99JUBQ/?tag=pcpapi-20

u/VandaGrey · 3 pointsr/PS4

are you planning to install this inside the ps4? if so thats the wrong one.

you will need something like this

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Laptop-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ

thats the best speed for the PS4 and no it doesnt void warranty. Sony actually give you instructions on how to upgrade the HDD.

This is a pound heavier, but I don't see that being a deal breaker reasonably.

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i7559-763BLK-Full-HD-GeForce/dp/B015PYYDMQ/ref=zg_bs_565108_19

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5
8 GB DDR3L / 256 GB Solid-State Drive
15.6-Inch FHD IPS, Wide-Angle, Anti Glare Screen.

Notice it doesn't have an HDD, this is easily fixed by buying one separate, unscrewing a panel on the back and plugging one in.

I recommend an SSHD http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Laptop-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1450713755&sr=1-3&keywords=laptop+hard+drive

Having used Amazons laptop picker, to narrow down the results to your specifications, I could not find a laptop that fit everything you wanted.

u/apostledeets · 3 pointsr/PS4

Further, your best bet is to wait until the 2 TB version of this is released. That will give you the speed you want with the space you'll need.

u/westparkguy · 3 pointsr/applehelp

This one is faster. I have one in a 15inch Mid 2012.

Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch ST1000LM014

Also, since you are going to crack the case, you might as well upgrade the RAM if you haven't already.

u/GeneralOsik · 3 pointsr/thinkpad

There is a lot of great info in this ThinkPad Product Specifications Reference PDF, specifically starting on page 45.

  1. You don't need a caddy for the main drive bay, but the bumpers and the tray help with drop protection and ease of removal and instillation. I would recommend getting one. For the second hard drive bay, you need a caddy.

  2. The main hard drive caddy is for the main hard drive, which will hold 7mm drives. The second hard drive caddy is for the 12.7mm Ultrabay, which for your computer, probably currently holds the DVD drive. This caddy will fit 9mm hard drives. Both hard drive caddies hold 2.5 inch wide drives. 9mm and 7mm refers to the height of the drive. 7mm drives can fit in 9mm caddies, but not vice versa. If you install a hard drive in the Ultrabay with the aid of the second hard drive caddy, you could install the operating system on this drive. That is up to you.

  3. 7mm for the main hard drive bay, 9mm for the second hard drive bay caddy. 12.7 is the size of the Ultrabay, but the caddy for this bay only holds a 9mm hard drive.

  4. 7mm for the main hard drive bay, 9mm for the second hard drive bay caddy.

  5. You will need a 2.5 inch SATA hard drive. It does not need to be formatted specifically for the T430. As long as you get a SATA hard drive, the ports will be in the right place. When you install the hard drive, if you have trouble putting it in, try turning it upside down.

Did the listing specify if the computer has included the main hard drive tray, bumpers, and cover? You will need a cover for the main drive bay if the computer is missing it.

If I where you, I would get a solid state drive for the main hard drive bay. They are 2.5 inch, 7mm SATA. Any drive will do, but I recommend the Crucial M500 or the SanDisk Extreme. You could also get a 7mm standard, spinning hard drive, like this Western Digital Blue

I would also get a second hard drive caddy and install it in the Ultrabay slot. This Seagate Hybrid Drive or this Western Digital Black would do nicely.

If you have any more questions, just let me know!

You can use a thumb drive to copy the saves until you get your new HD installed. As for installation, they all have the same process so no matter which one you buy, they will all be equally easy to install.

This is the one I bought a couple of months ago: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B99JUBQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00

It's a good bit faster than the default HD and it doesn't really break the bank. There's also SSDs which are much faster but also probably way more expensive than what you're looking for. As for the games themselves, they can't be transferred over to the new HD the way that game saves can. If it's on disc you have to manually reinstall the game. If it was a digital download then you just have to log back into your Playstation account and re-download it.

I would get a HDD/SSD Hybrid drive. You get the speed of a SSD(just a tad slower than a full fledged SDD about 2 second difference in speed tests) and storage size of a regular HDD. Replace your internal drive with a larger one as you can't run games from external drive. See guide in the sidebar.

As far as I know, the same recommended drives are valid today, just cheaper. See the Seagate Laptop Drive, which is a hybrid drive with good overall specs. SSDs are a waste of money as the OS doesn't support all features that make an SSD great.

Its the #1 best HDD for PS4 out there. I have it for about 10 months now and really happy and glad I upgraded my Ps4. After the OS and Update youll have about 836GB left of space. I own almost every game from the store and still got 122GB left. Im happy I dont have to uninstall my games because of no space. But this month my HDD will be full though after GTAV and 2 other games :D guess ill be removing my indie games if needed. Yeah, this will fit you. 1TB is more than enough

Try this Restore File System and this PS3 Rebuild Database.

About the HDD, this one works great for me Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB . You would think it wouldn't work so much with games that are constantly streaming from the HDD like GTA but I think it knows which files are used the most because there's definitely some good improvement, and for other kind of games that load more rarely and mostly the same data it's much better.

If you have the PS3 12GB Model you'll also need a PS3 HDD Mounting Bracket (for around $5 on Amazon) or check this video Upgrade PS3 to 500GB Hard Drive without using HDD Caddy.

Also about Turning it off via the Power Button, I've never had any problem doing that, no corrupt File System or anything. Just don't hold down the Power Button until it turn off because that's forcing it off, just press the button once and let it turn off on his own, it'll take a few seconds but it will.

Firstly, Welcome to the PlayStation community!
---

---

Let me answer Your questions.

  1. You should buy a bigger HDD, because most of the new games are over 40GB, the bigger HDD You get, the longer it lasts.

  • Also, consider buying a hybrid drive (like this one) it isn't that pricey, but they are faster than normal 7200rpm HDDs.
  • SSDs are better in speed, that's true, but the 1-2TB versions are very pricey at the moment.
  • Get a Seagate Expansion STBX2000401 - 2TB HDD if You want to save some money.

    ---

  1. You can find HDD speed comparisons here and here.

    ---

  2. You can make backups of Your save-games to a USB drive read more about this here.

    ---

  3. Sadly, I don't know anything about the Voucher code.

    ---

I hope that I've answered Your questions.

If You have any more question, feel free to contact me.

    Have a nice day!

I would honestly just purchase the 12 GB super slim and replace the hard drive with a Seagate 1TB 2.5" SSHD Drive. Hybrid SSHD drives are much faster than regular drives.

Total cost for both is CDN$360.18 with free shipping and it is so easy to replace the 12GB hard drive with the 1 TB hybrid drive, just look up the many youtube videos on how to do it.

u/wanderjahr · 2 pointsr/PS4

> Standard 5400rpm drive will give you a 59s load time in KZ while a Hybrid drive will mark at around 41s and an SSD will be 39s.

That's a 30% increase wih a SSHD! Why wouldn't you want that, especially if you're going to upgrade your drive anyways? This SSHD is $97 for 1TB, more than enough room for games.

Yes, you're right, the increases aren't as dramatic as PC's, but they are increases nonetheless. If you're going to spend ~$100 to upgrade your drive, shouldn't some of that money see increased loading times, however slight?

OP, I definitely suggest getting a SSHD if you're going to upgrade your drive. I know that's what I will be doing at some point.

u/austinw24 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

If you have the funds, I would go with 2 480GB SSDs.

As a cost saving thing, you could always get 1 480GB SSD such as a PNY 2211 or a HyperX as budget versions and a 1 TB SSHD to supplement

All products have great reviews and are reputable brands.

u/Teobald_Daedelus · 2 pointsr/ffxiv

I currently have this:

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1404853651&sr=1-1&keywords=hybrid+ssd

it's a hybryd SSH, and I load just as fast as anyone else into dungeons. in RT I see more character models and from much further, and I can actually DO Odin without dying every 5 seconds now.

The difference between a SSD and SSHD for me was negligible, but the amount I save cash-wise to get 1TB compared to 120GB was totally worth it IMO.

EDIT: Words.

It is a mix of SSD drive and normal HDD. It has a SSD cache that it uses to store stuff it access frequently like operating system and I guess BF1 maps.

Here's a good explanation.

u/meatwaddancin · 1 pointr/PS4

This 1TB Hybrid Drive will double the space and give you faster load times, without the cons of a pure SSD in a PS4. However, if you already used up 500 gb, perhaps you need more than a TB. Have you looked into clearing out saved vids or whatever is taking up all that space?

u/leroywhat · 1 pointr/buildapc

So my build is almost ready, I plan on using the gaming desktop much more often than my current laptop. Last week I bought a WD Blue 1 TB drive to store games in conjunction with my Crucial MX100 SSD. Yesterday my dad upgraded to storage in his laptop and handed me this Seagate 1 TB Hybrid drive. Is there any benefit for using the Hybrid drive to store the games over my WD Blue? And just use my HDD as mass storage for 1080p video/music? Or should I do it the other way around?

u/D_VoN · 1 pointr/bloodborne

I bought this drive with my PS4 at launch. Absolutely zero problems. I've read the difference between SSD and SSHD's are negligible, sometimes the SSHD's had better performance. I can't comment on a 7200 RPM HDD but I know Sony recommends 5400 for the PS4.

Plus, it's only $77 on Amazon. Cheapest price ever for that HDD on Amazon is $75 so it's a great deal right now.

SSHD for my laptop, and it works really well for my games. Would it be possible for me to put this in a PC, to try cut down on costs?

u/dapeche · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Great! I use it as a driver for Plex and Windows 8.1 Media Center as guide and dvr (HD Homerun Prime with Xbox 360s as extenders). I went with the i5 to somewhat assure myself I could better handle multiple streams and it's been without issue. edit: also my video collection is not on the NUC, it's on a Synology NAS. I did put in a hybrid SSD/HD drive in the NUC.

u/JackDeMeyers · 1 pointr/mac

I would go with a Hybrid Drive! They offer great performance for your most used programs, including OS X. My MBP wakes up instantly, and boots in about 10 seconds. They also offer good capacity. Mine is 750 GB total.

This is a really good option right here I think someone else also proposed this as an option, and I would say 100% you should do this!

It's a Seagate 1TB. This. I got it from Amazon. I've been using it since September of 2013 with no problems. I also replaced my optical drive, like you, and am running the stock 250GB little guy that my MBP came with. I plan to upgrade that one as well, but I'm in no rush.

u/construktz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

It's not worth it, really. Get the one I linked you and This 1TB HSSD and an external enclosure.

Put the 1TB HDD in the enclosure, hook it up, clone the current drive, then pull them out and swap them and you have a 1TB HSSD for cheaper, and a 500GB external drive. Much better bang for the buck.

u/Hedryn · 1 pointr/buildapc

Not exactly building a PC, but I am looking to upgrade my macbook pro 2011 hard drive. Trying to decide between this Seagate Solid State Hybrid drive at only 5400 RPM or a Western Digital 7400 RPM typical drive. The former has less RPM but more cache and the hybrid may help the performance, but the latter has a higher RPM.

I don't do too much intense computing but I do use my computer for HD video editing and it would be great if my computer could do this more smoothly. If you have another laptop hard drive you'd like to recommend that'd be great too. Thanks for your time.

What I would do, if I wanted another laptop which would hold for 5 or more years:

I would buy a business line laptop, something like the Dell Latitude E5530. I would choose the base model and upgrade the following parts:

  • CPU to a Intel i5-3230M
  • RAM to 4 GB
  • Display to a 1920x1080p display

Price would be $673.80 with the coupon 88KSR26X$74PFT (expires on 8/15). Don't upgrade the HDD. You can do it yourself, if would be way cheaper. Just buy a 1TB HDD of Newegg or Amazon.

The advantage of business line laptops is that every part is easy to access. It even would void the warranty, if you would replace the HDD or upgrade the RAM.

You can read a review of the Dell Latitude E5530 here to get a first look/overview over this laptop (the model in the review doesn't have the 1080p display, which is way better than the 768p display they have).

I literally just picked up a PS4 Pro and am looking to flip my old one. It even has an upgraded 1TB HD (this one).

How much are you looking to spend?

u/coma420 · 1 pointr/PS4

Are you looking for speed, or size? I personally recommend the Seagate 1TB SSHD for speed/size for value, as you get twice the standard drive size, and a big increase in speed. It automatically caches the most used files on the SSD portion of the drive, so that game files or OS files that are accessed frequently can be loaded the fastest. It increased boot speed and game load times on games you play frequently. Say you play a LOT of Destiny, it's going to become quite fast loading the assets you use a lot, like the Tower, in game worlds, things like that.

On the other end of the spectrum, you can go for sheer size, and maintain the same speeds you have now, and just never worry about filling up the drive until 5 years down the road. The similarly priced 2TB Spinpoint -

The SSHD so far is great. Obviously bigger, but there's now a noticeable difference boot up times for the system & for my games from rest mode (playing mgsv now). Download times seem slightly better, but the real difference seems to be in apps that are frequently accessed. Hope that helps.

Dumb question, maybe: Is there a reason why one couldn't be designed to use one of those hybrid drives, like this one for $97, and use the SSD portion for the high-speed transfer rate and get that sweet 1TB of storage?

Or design a system that emulates that process - use a CF card (or high-speed internal storage) to record on the fly, and then offload the data onto a hard drive automatically?

u/SweetTomatoes · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The Y40 only has one drive slot as far as I know. You can get a hybrid drive like the ones from Seagate with a small SSD cache to speed up booting and a large disk for game storage.

The Y40 comes with a hybrid drive in it, but it is simply awful.

EDIT: 512GB drives are now only $250. It is definitely not too bad to spend that for a huge, fast drive.

I seem to have hit a jackpot of critical conditions going bad on my drive.

So from my little understanding of the issues, these are hardware faults in the drive and there's no software fix? Like doing a clean install wouldn't help I assume?

You were suggesting SSDs but those are still pretty expensive for the storage size as you said. Since this computer is around 5 years old would SSD's advantages even be noticeable?

How about these Hybrid drives, those look a lot more reasonable price wise. If it was between a traditional drive and a hybrid which would you recommend?

I would put getting a keyboard as a must. It makes your quality of life so much better as a PS3 user. I have this one http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Wireless-Keypad-Playstation-3/dp/B001ENPDJA/ but also have another Logitech full size. I don't need the full size one anymore as it was more helpful at game launch when I was explaining dungeon mechanics to people.

Another upgrade I would suggest that is def not necessary but makes a world of difference for later in the game is to update to a SSHD in your PS3. It is about $100 and helps the system with load times, AOE dodging (it paints them faster on the ground) and rendering of your environment and other users. http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ/

It is super easy to upgrade.
Almost impossible for you to damage anything.

When you install a new drive it will wipe everything and do a first time setup though if I recall.

I highly recommend getting the Samsung SSD Hybrid 1TB Drive

This video shows the performance differences between a normal drive, this hybrid drive, and a pure SSD.

I am running this drive and its great. There can be a fairly significant difference in loading times.

u/Shuurk · 1 pointr/AlienwareAlpha

Some good options are the Samsung 850 EVO, SanDisk SSD, or the Kingston Digital. If you're looking for space and you don't mind the loss in speed you can also go with this Seagate SSHD. You can also use the stock hard drive and use an external hard drive enclosure for some extra space.

u/tsdguy · 1 pointr/mac

You might consider a hybrid drive. Give you a large mechanical drive and the addition of an internal SSD drive (32GB) with intelligent disk sector management for not much more than a standard drive.

OS X boots very quickly - about 15 seconds on my MBP 2011. Standard file I/O is about the same however the disk caches frequently use sectors so if you boot and launch the same app each time it will start up very quickly.

u/RickVince · 1 pointr/PS4

That's what I'm mulling over. Do I really need 2 TB? Would this be a better idea if it really does increase speed, considering 1 TB should be more than enough for me?

You'l have to forgive me, I always over-think everything.

u/Aerowen69 · 1 pointr/PS4

There is no 2TB drive of 7200RPM that will fit in the PS4. Your best options are either more space or more speed. For space it's the 2TB seagate one which you'll have to wedge out of that bracket it comes in. And for speed it's the 1TB SSHD(Solid State Hybrid Drive) from seagate([amazon link] (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ/)).

I have the SSHD personally and it gives a noticeable speed increase (it's also great for the PS3). It loads stuff into the cache, everything the game uses a lot gets put in and read from the much faster cache instead from the HDD platters. So it's not just loading times that increase but also reduces texture pop-in etc. Here are some yt links.

If you plan on getting a lot of games the extra space might be better, especially because even disc games install everything to the harddrive with the PS4. But do the math to see if you really need that many games installed. I'm currently up to about 22 games on my PS4, although only about half of it are large disc installs or free2play games like War Thunder. But I still have about 700GB left free.

I think you mean a hybrid drive. Like this?

Pretty sure Seagate doesn't make SSDs.

I put a 256GB solid state drive (SSD) in my PS3 recently, works beautifully. Thinking of upgrading to a 1TB hybrid drive because I'm already down to 50GB free on the new drive!

Anyways, you can find what you need on Amazon. The link from r_k_ologist looks like a good buy, and if you want something a little faster (and have the money to spend) you might want to try a hybrid drive like this: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372266767&sr=8-1&keywords=1tb+hybrid

This is what I have, 2 TB is overkill (for now)
I have a decent amount of games on mine now and over 700 GB left also SSHD is faster than regualr HDD

Download Transistor because it's the best thing in the world.

Also I recommend upgrading your HDD to a 1TB SSD hybrid. I just did it myself and the space alone is worth it as 500GB on a next gen console is gonna go pretty fast.

Just a thought to do before you get too much saved on your HDD and have to find a way to transfer it over to a new one.

That's the one I bought and it's pretty awesome!

Good luck on your PS4 fun :)

I am saying hybrid SSD drive, HSSD. You can keep speaking in generalities and conjecturing, it will make the redditors who don't want to put money down to upgrade happy, but anyone who has actually gone this route knows how full of shit you are.

What are you talking about? I have a 1 TB SSHD with a 16 GB SSD and it does make a massive difference. A 250 GB SSD will suffice.

Edit: Strangely enough, I managed to find the SSHD on the internet... crazy, right? This is the SSHD that I have, my bad it is not 16 GB, but 8 GB. And even though you are saying that it does not make a difference because the PS does not support it, I beg to differ. I have had the SSHD for almost a year and due to it, the loading times for Witcher and Bloodborne have been cut massively and this is even more obvious in online multiplayer where often enough my game is loaded before my partner's (Tested this in Far Cry 5 CO-OP. We were both in the same house, sharing the same internet connection.).
