Casualties were extremely high on Omaha Beach, but it was the exception, not the rule. Despite that, the Omaha landings have become the de facto image of D-Day landings (Saving Private Ryan and the WWII first-person shooter games that followed in its wake likely have a lot to do with that).
On Omaha, the US beach assaulters faced a newly-arrived, full-strength division, whereas the other beaches were defended by weaker units. The aerial bombardment also completely missed the beach defenses, as the aviators assigned to Omaha released their bombs too late (they feared accidentally hitting friendly forces). To make matters worse, almost all of the "DD" amphibious tanks assigned to the first wave were released too far out at sea and sunk. Lastly, the geography of Omaha was extremely difficult; high, steep ridges overlooked the beach, giving perfect fields of fire to the German defenders. The only reasonable exits to the beach were a few draws, all of which were heavily fortified by the German. All of these factors made Omaha a nightmare compared to the other beaches.
