That's weird. This style of clip has pretty much always been successful for me even with large, stubborn books. The only exception is if I'm only a few pages from the beginning or end of a book.
You can always use large binder clips to hold the pages together on the outside edges.
I personally love using very large spring clamps. But I use a music stand and I can use them from the top. They might work from the side or at angle on different, more traditional piano stands.
