I'm about 3/4 through reading Peter Kessler's Oracle Bones: A Journey Between China's Past and Present. While it's not strictly a 'history' book, it does a fairly good job of blending personal narrative with history, and modern with ancient history. It's very captivating, and an enjoying read.
