The first book I was ever assigned in highschool that I actually enjoyed was Ordinary People by Judith Guest. I appreciated it because it was a story that was relate-able, i.e., it wasn't based during the French Revolution, Civil War, the antebellum south etc. It was based in modern day, it was about teenagers and their family.
