I used Organic Chemistry by Hornback (excellent explanations and problems) paired with Electron Flow in Organic Chemistry by Scudder (who was my professor). Scudder's approach is really helpful, but I'll be honest with you, his not-yet-published second edition is far superior, with many improvements and clarifications. I'd still recommend the first edition; you can get it for less than $30. Oh, and I got an A- in OChemI and a B in OChemII.
