I had a vest/harness like thing, it was okay but too much in front.
Then I had a should Sling pack that was great but it strained my shoulder.

I love it. Weight distribution is through my hips, equally. I don't carry much gear, use SF slim boxes, some tippet, couple extra leaders, splitshot, a hemostat clip, my licenses and nips.
It's particularly perfect cause I have a tendency to go into deep water putting myself in peculiar situations. The pack is water resistant, yet will fill if it goes under. I don't care too much about gear getting wet.

Backpacks are also great however can be obtrusive when you need something. My friends have backpacks and keep minimal essential gear in their chest wader pocket
