There's also the Panasonic LX7.

I've recently started being happier with recommending compact cameras to people who aren't going to buy lenses anyway. Tons of people never move off of their kit lenses... so they might as well have a compact.

There are a bunch of premium compacts these days for $800+, like the Fuji x100t or the Panasonic LX100, that people can be happy with... although now I'm just rambling and not answering your question sorry!

I have the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and it is no longer a pocket camera when you add the extra batteries, LCD viewfinder and rigging it needs to make it usable.

Instead, I recommend the [$750 4K Panasonic LX100] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GORMJTI/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00GORMJTI&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20). It has the viewfinder the BMPCC lacks, plus a larger sensor in a [smaller body] (http://camerasize.com/compare/#453,569) and, even with a lens, it costs less than a body-only Pocket Cinema Camera.

The downsides are that it lacks an external mic jack and can only record continuously for 30 minutes before it has to be restarted.

If you don't need an external mic and don't plan to shoot long events with the camera, it can produce stunning images in a very small package.

Here is the image quality you can get from this camera:

>...best video quality for under $1000?

If by "quality", you mean resolution, the cameras with the highest resolution below $1000 are the <$900 Ultra High Definition [Panasonic LX100] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GORMJTI/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00GORMJTI&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) (4/3" sensor) and [Panasonic FZ1000] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KXOS3D4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00KXOS3D4&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) (1" sensor).

They may or may not be the "best" cameras when it comes to shallow depth of field or dynamic range, but as of this post, they will give you the highest large-sensor resolution below $1000.

Here's why UHD ("4K") is higher quality than HD:

If you want simple, get a Panasonic Lumix LX100 or a Sony RX100 III. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed and it will fit in your coat pocket.
