I LOVE the dog door that we put in.
It's insulated and has made our lives so much easier. We have two dogs who love to sunbathe, play, bird watch, chase insects, protect the house from the mailman and of course, relieve themselves. We've noticed that they are much more calm, happy and at ease when they have the freedom to choose whether or not to be outside.
We live in the city (not a big city like New York or San Fran. but a city nonetheless). The door is placed on the back door to our back yard. I figure that if someone really wants to get in, they're going to get in no matter what. So, while a dog door might make it easier, a solid door certainly won't stop them. And that'd be where our house alarm and homeowner's insurance would cover us.
