Keep in mind you also need the Hue Hub for this. Probably not worth it unless already invested into the Hue System.

Lifx is another option with no hub required.

One thing I'll add is that I like the hue lights because I can control them with my harmony remote and with Google Assistant.

It's the Philips Hue LightStrip Plus Dimmable LED Smart Light (all of my smart lights are Philips Hue).

It has the full color spectrum, and the strip can be both trimmed and extended. It connects to the bridge I already own, and it can be controlled as part of the room or independently ("Alexa, turn on the living room lights," "Alexa, make the light strip blue," and so on). It has its own adhesive so that it can be attached to the backs of shelves, televisions, and so on.

It's a bit pricy, at about $90 MSRP, but I picked it up on-sale at MicroCenter during the Christmas holidays.

Amazon:

$49.97 LightStrip Plus

$23.99 Extension

11/28 Edit: it's over 😞

One of the issues with the strips is electrical efficiency.

They run at 12 volts and there are 3 LEDs in series. This is fine for the blue since blue LEDs have a voltage drop of 3.1-3.3 volts or so. Round up to 10 volts and you only lose 2 volt to the series resistor.

The red LEDs have a voltage drop of about 2.0-2.2 volts or so. Call it 6.5 volts for the 3 red LEDs in series. That means 5.5 volts is being lost to the resistor and wasted as heat.

Most all strips also use cheap Epistar LEDs which are also not very electrically efficient in general. You can find better strips like by Philips but are more expensive.

You really do get what you pay for so eBay rgb strips would have to be pretty close to the plants and you would have to look out for excess stem elongation. Our eyes are not very sensitive to red/blue light like green light so you would need an appropriate light meter to dial things in particularly for microgreens and for cloning.

Most everyone uses high power LEDs rather than medium (strip) or low power LEDs. You can get high power rbg LEDs on eBay but again it will be of low quality like pretty much all LED lighting sold on eBay. You longer term ROI (return on investment) tends to be better with higher quality LEDs and LED lights.

They sell LED strip hue lights

( Philips Hue LightStrip Plus Dimmable LED Smart Light (Compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014H2OXYU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ydgOzbS26H119 )

But the ones you used seem maybe more adaptable to your needs.

u/iBoost · 2 pointsr/Hue

Amazon has certified uses ones for only a couple bucks more.

In my example, I believe I would need 3 FLS-PP IP Zigbee ballasts ($55ea), 1-2 RGBW LED strips ($17ea), 3 power adaptors ($17ea), a splitter (~$15ea), and 4 ethernet cable adaptors (~$20 total). Grand total ~$268 on the conservative end + tax.

Or I could buy 3 Hue lightstrips ($90ea), splitter (~$15ea), and 4 ethernet cable adaptors (~$20 total). Grand total ~$305 + tax.

I could save ~$40 or bite the bullet and know that my current ecosystem will work seamlessly with the Hue lightstrips. Either way its not cheap but there are trade offs to going the DIY route.

Please disprove my estimates/theory, I would happily pay less for a setup with equal functionality :)

P.S. I'll add links to the items listed above but I'm on the train commuting in and the wifi sucks :/

Hey, fella. This looks beautiful. Well done. I imagined doing something like this myself, once, but the technical know-how is... not something I possess. This is very helpful. In my dream setup, it'd be done using the hue version, so I could control the case lights from my phone. But thanks a lot for posting this. :)

Each kit comes with a brick and the light strip that is approximately 6 ft long. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014H2OXYU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Each extension is approximately 3 ft long. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014H2P3ZI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 A single brick (included with the main kit) can support up to 33 ft or approximately the main light strip and approxiately 8-9 extensions. I have read other people saying that at 7/8 extensions, the light thrown out is less light than with 1-3 extensions. So if you wanted to, you could connect two extensions and essentially get the length of two lightstrips. Keep in mind this is going to be a single color and control.

u/techtornado · 1 pointr/Hue

Here's the deal- $50 for the lightstrip and $50 for 4x white bulbs

I'll poke around for some apps (feel free to recommend some)
Will also ask Phillips if it will be possible in a future firmware update.

u/theazman · 1 pointr/homeautomation

This the non dimmable one? Or is it this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014H2OXYU ?

u/sillyrants · 1 pointr/AskTechnology

Right, I'm not suggesting you build the thing DIY. I'm just saying you need the "smartness" to be in the lightstrip itself rather than the plug, because there is no reliable, standard way for a plug to tell a lightstrip what brightness to go to. In the old days, dimmer switches worked in ways that modern LEDs don't like. So the lightstrip itself has to be able to modulate brightness on its own.

The one I linked to, and others like it, have mobile apps with timer functions. You don't have to DIY anything, just set the timing in the app.

Edit: If you prefer a name-brand one:

It'll require a Hue bridge though.

u/SirFadakar · 1 pointr/titanfall

I take it this is your application given the TF2 videos are already on the page?

Regardless, I don't have any Hue lights but I've wanted some for a while. Would I need a bridge for this or could I just buy this and have it working standalone?

u/SocketRience · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

unfortunately, the philips hue light strip is not cheap either..

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Lightstrip-Generation-Works-Amazon/dp/B014H2OXYU

(remember you need the bridge for it to work)

u/HueLights · 1 pointr/Hue

The bulb resets to the normal white light at full brightness (i.e., 2710K). You may want to complement the A19 bulbs with a Lightstrip Plus. These have the same color representation as the Gen 3 bulbs and work great under counters or behind TVs: https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Lightstrip-Generation-Works-Amazon/dp/B014H2OXYU/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1499286818&sr=1-1&keywords=B014H2OXYU&linkCode=ll1&tag=huelig0f-20&linkId=3802c08990317c43565155ebca823ddc
