Fantastic budget "Hi-Fi", the SHP9500 headphones have been loved for a long time for their comfort and high value for the money.

This is a pretty good price according to CCC, although for those interested in the second revision SHP9500S model, it's only about $12 more on Amazon as well.

EDIT: From what I've read, there's not much of a difference between the two versions.

EDIT 2: The price dropped $1.04 down to $67.84 lmfao, cancel your orders and re-buy for that sweet dollar savings!

[this one? ](http://Philips SHP9500S 50mm Drivers HiFi Precision Stereo Over-Ear Headphones Open Back (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3LM3J5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_saC4Db5T6FKQ9) I checked them but they're open back and I'm still undecided whtmether I want open back since I plan on using them while on commute for games or music.

Edit: wow that is cheap, compared to other recommendations I'm seeing, I think it's on sale

the same seller is also them selling a "silver" version of the non "S" on german amazon link

I would not put too much trust into them

Sorry for the long post but I hope it is helpful.

If your not opposed to an open back set of headphones then I'd suggest looking at the Philips SHP9500s along with a vmoda boompro microphone. I recently upgraded from those myself and I really loved them, I do have to admit that you lose a bit of audio quality using the vmoda boompro microphone compared to just using a straight audio cable to them. However I felt they were still far superior to conventional "gaming" headsets.

I just upgraded from the shp9500s to the Philips fidelio x2s myself which you can find used sometimes for around $150. They are really bass but definitely better sounding than the shp9500s.

-

The SHP9500s tend to go on sale quite often for around $45-50 which is a great price for what you get I think.

My thoughts on my current 3 headsets

-

Sennheiser GameOne Gaming Headsets: Smallest sound stage of the three. Midrange to me is clearer but when going back and forth between the shp9500s the Sennheisers sound "muddy" in a way. Also seem to have the least amount of bass. They aren't bad but I prefer a little more bass.

-

Philips shp9500s with vmoda boompro: Good sound stage with what seems like a very neutral sound. Bass is better than the Sennheisers.

-

Philips Fidelio x2s: Largest sound stage of the three. VERY BASSY. Overall audio quality (without vmoda boompro since this DRASTICALLY cripples the x2s) is superior to the shp9500s and the GameOnes in my mind.

-

Again this is all subjective in my mind as I prefer open back headsets as the sound stage is better and I feel like my ears dont get as hot. Some people don't like it though (my wife for example) because everyone around you can hear it also.

-

If it was me I would look for the shp9500s on sale for $45-50 on either amazon or newegg (pops up on the /r/buildapcsales) every now and then. If I had to do it again knowing what I know now I would have gone with a modmic over the vmoda boompro just because of the audio degradation that happens with the vmoda boompro. This was way longer than I wanted but again I hope you find it helpful, if you have Amazon Prime I'd pick up the shp9500s and try them out, if you don't like them then return them.

I’ve looked into the Philips SHP9500 and pairing it with the Vmoda boom mic or the antlion mod mic. Not sure which is better but I’m leaning towards the boom mic because it’s less wire?

I’ve seen the shp9500 on amazon for about $80 bucks and another amazon prime listing for $63 bucks. Kinda confused if there’s a difference

Here are the links

  1. this one is $80

  2. this one is $69.99 as of the time I posted it

Would you guys suggest pairing these headphones plus the boom mic to the Astro A40 mix amp? I will be using it on the Xbox one mostly

A microphone to go with a pair of open headphones. Sorry if this isn't allowed as it wasn't on the template or guide but this is probably the most knowledgeable headphone/set group I know of.

Using an SMSL M3 DAC so no solutions such as the BoomPro as that caused a ground loop.

  • Budget - Up to $70 but the less the better.
  • Source - Probably a cheap USB sound card or my cheap mobo. Whichever sounds better.
  • Requirements for Isolation - This will be paired with Philips SHP9500S open headphones. My primary concern is having loud music or game noise not trigger voice activation.
  • Past mics - V-MODA BoomPro. Great mic and build quality. Causes a ground loop when you don't plug the mic and headphones into the same source.

I'm currently looking at the Sony ECMCS3 Clip mic due to quality and price. Being stereo I'm concerned it's designed to pick up too much. Anyone have any experience with open cans and this mic?

Also looking at ModMic 4. That's the one with the uni-directional mic only. But my SHP9500S have only very small pieces of solid plastic. I'd probably be looking at sticking it onto the grill which seems flimsy? Anyone have experience with this? I'd want to be pretty sure that the isolation would be good enough as it's a $55 purchase vs. $16 for the Sony if I'm just taking potshots. Thanks.
