I have a great example that shows the difference between a "normal" and an "expensive" pen!
This is a Pilot Vanishing Point and sells for $140 on Amazon. It's a pen that you'll see mentioned here often, and is a quality pen featuring a metal body and 18k gold nib. Most people would agree that it's worth the money.
This is the same pen except that it features a lacquer and mother of pearl finish on the body and costs $300. Every other part of the pen is 100% the same. What makes it cost over twice as much? Each of the 10 layers of urushi lacquer is hand applied and polished, as is the raden mother of pearl dusting. Each pen is a unique work of art.
Does it make any difference in how the pen feels or writes? None at all. Is it worth the money? Only you can decide that, but it was to me.
