A decent 2.1 or even 2.0 system will sound nicer than those hometheater-in-a-box sets. Those small surround speakers sound like crap, and cannot reproduce lower frequencies (even if you have a subwoofer, they should go down to about 85Hz).
If you buy (for example) 2xthese and 1xthese for about $350, you'll get a lot better sound. Note that this is just an example system.
A lot people go into "high quality audio" by buying a surround set, but only learning afterwards that while surround is great, it's better to have a good stereo set if you don't have the budget for good 5.1. You can always buy 2.1 first and then expand from there.
