CHARGE EVERYTHING. I mean EVERYTHING. You never know what you’re going to need or want when the power goes out, or what can be potentially useful.

If you have power banks, DEFINITELY charge those. Larger ones can take up to a full 24 hours to charge especially if you’re using older charging cables. If you don’t have a power bank, get one. Invest in the best one you can afford; $50 will get you a good one. Used sparingly, 26800mAh can last an incredibly long time. I got this one to take along while traveling and the charge lasts forever.

If shit goes down, Internet is gonna be one of the first things to go. Keep in mind that you can use most smartphones as mobile hotspots, provided cellular service is still alright. Y’know, if you need to email claim forms or something to your insurance agent. <cough>

Edited to add: Have plenty of spare charging cables. Those fuckers will stop working suddenly with no good reason.

To echo what others have said, tell local newscasters to fuck off. NOAA is accessible online but also via a handful of apps for smartphones and tablets. I really like Hurricane Tracker by EZ Apps. Also, sign up for NOLA Ready text alerts. Text your zip code to 888777 or go to ready.nola.gov/alerts. An emergency/weather radio comes in handy as well.

None of these were options in the Katrina era. I do not take them for granted now.

Also, don’t get drunk/high/whatever. You may need to think critically, quickly, and it’s not worth risking your life just so you could have a HURRICATION HUHUHUH. Have one to take the edge off but stay in check.

RIP my dude, obviously this won't help today, but you should get a power bank. Not one of those cheap ones though. I use this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P96JN11/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_r6hRCb5EJ0H7D I keep one (with a cable) in my car just in case, it's saved my dozens of times.
