If you're going full manual, use this guy. Cheap, works well, cycles fast, and is single-contact, so it doesn't send anything through your camera. I love mine.

Yeah the biggest killer for pictures is not enough light or harsh lighting. Pointing the flash directly at the subject. So getting a cheap flash that you can bounce off the ceiling anywhere from 1/8 to full power will yield "professional" looking results pretty quickly. You can pick up a piece of foam poster board at any hobby store for a couple bucks and just make sure you frame the shot so you only have the subject and foam board in the viewfinder.

I just took that with a $20 flash, a Nikon D50 ($100~$150 on eBay), a 18-55mm kit lens and a grey foam board. Literally did nothing but point and shoot.
