Hey!
I was in a very similar situation, and found my 2 favorite books, which I have never heard any one else talk about.... and subsequently cannot remember the name of them. If you go to your library and in the section with quantum / computation stuff, if you see 2 smaller books, they are green and yellow, light ish color, and are by 2 or 3 italian authors.
The organization of the books is great. The first book spends a while talking about the quantum physics, taking you from simple wave function stuff, to the quantum properties of 2 state systems, to quantum algorithms.
The second book is more of an implementation book, and take you through lots of experiments where people are making them.
More info about them:
They have a cool latin phrase on the front, which is like the same thing written if you read it in any way (eg. it's a grid of letters, but no matter where you start or end it is a phrase that remains...) sorry, i know its not very helpful describing just the cover... ill keep looking to see if i can find it. (I'm at a conference and not near my collection)
EDIT:
found it!
