I use a waterproof iPod shuffle for swimming laps. It came with some waterproof earbuds, but they didn't last very long (metal screen protecting the driver inside would rust out within a few weeks). I replaced them with the cheapest option I could find:

The sound quality leaves something to be desired, but they are cheap (around 15 bucks shipped) and last me about 6 months of almost daily use in the water. Seems in a workout environment waterproof might be a good option.
For normal listening I have another pair with much better sound quality (not concerned with them being able to withstand water or sweat)

I have an underwater ipod shuffle and I use these headphones with them. I've been doing so for the past 4 years and they are fantastic. With that being said they are a bit annoying at times. I just got out of the pool an hour ago and my left ear got some water in it and I couldn't hear out of my left ear for probably 20 minutes towards the end. This happens every now and then but it doesn't bother me all that much, one ear of sound is better than no sound. I highly recommend you do not buy these if you swim with a headcap. They are charging you 30 dollars for the same product with a shorter cord. Swim with a headcap and just shove the excess cord inside. YMMV with the above product and you will likely have to replace it every now and then. I'm on my 4th pair in 4 years. I would have never got into swimming/triathlon had it not been for being able to listen to music underwater.
