I just learned a ton about the Puritans, and that time in history, by reading The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell. Great tone, easy read, lots of personal anecdotes mixed in with the history.

Bonus points: I actually read that book after reading Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, a pseudohistory about Isaac Newton and the rise of Natural Philosophy, among other things, and now I feel like I really understand what life in that period was like.
