Moto X, G4, V10. Z5, HTC M9 all have MicroSD slots.

if you're the type to keep a battery pack with you all the time, you can use a battery pack with filehub capabilities. surprised more people on /r/android don't champion the Ravpower WD02/WD03.

6000 mah battery pack, USB ports for external hard drives, SD card slots, ethernet port for router functions (great for travel), DLNA. it's like having network storage everywhere you go that can also charge your phone. connect to it with a file manager like solid explorer over DLNA and you have 4TB wirelessly.

you can get last year's model WD02 for $35, it's pretty much the same thing just used MicroSD cards instead of larger SD cards. bought my brother a WD02 for christmas last year and he loves it.

Yes, there are a few different ways to do this.

  1. The cloud. This basically means using an online storage service like OneDrive, DropBox, Box, Google Photos, Amazon Cloud Drive, etc. All are similar and have their own advantages/disadvantages. I typically use two of these to make sure photos/videos are not skipped and lost. The major barrier to this is finding Wifi, but not just Wifi, Wifi that is fast enough and consistent. That'll depend on where you're traveling and staying.

  2. An external hard/flash drive with a portable file hub. The main purpose of the file hub is to serve as a connection between a USB hard/flash drive and memory card to your phone. You can transfer media from your phone to a memory card to a portable hard drive. I used it for my GoPro videos to transfer files from a memory card to a hard drive while using the app on my phone to control the process. No laptop or internet connection needed.

  3. There are other options like bringing a laptop and connecting your phone to it, swapping memory cards in your phone if your phone supports it (sorry, iPhone users), phone specific USB/hard drive adapters, etc.

People who use their phones for streaming need to be on a plan that fills that need without worry. That won't be Fi unless you find a compromise with offline music and video.

I'm considering getting a multi-function FileHub. I like/need some of the other features and the streaming using a large capacity microsd will be gravy.

You could always use a media streaming solution (like DLNA). I bought this thing a while back for just that.

So I'm at work right now and can't leave a very in depth comment but there are devices with wifi built in that have usb and sd card readers built right in that will do this for you. Thing is that they're usually like $50 but you can stream movies to up to 5 devices, use it to recharge your phone, and use it as a wireless router if your at a place (ex hotel) that only has Ethernet. Here's a link to one of the many

I searched around and found a couple of cheap USB NAS adapters which you might be able to use to host your existing large hard drive to the Nexus Player over Wi-FI or LAN. I'm not sure they support EXT4, so you would have to check the specs. Good luck.

+1 to ditching the laptop

I used a filehub and 2 external HDD as backup. I could upload straight from the filehub to facebook anything that I wanted to post during the trip.

Also doubles as a wireless bridge, something that came in handy a few times.

They make this for external HDs, but I've not tried it personally.

Would this be for movies/videos? If you set up a Plex media server, and then download VLC for iPad, you can download your media on VLC for offline use, assuming you have the capacity for it.

I also use a Galaxy Tab S2, which you can connect external media to. I use the Galaxy for work, and the iPad for personal use. The iPad is quickly becoming my go to for all need though.
