if you ask me, I would say that minimalism spawned the techno revolution. Philip Glass is a massive influence on the music world and he (in my opinion) basically was the main crux of the minimalist movement. However, not many people like to bob their heads to Glass's lingering piano rhythms. It was too repetitive and didn't make you want to sing along or dance. They want pop music. They want something they can dance to. Pop producers are sometimes good and sometimes bad musicians, both kind of lead to a similar result in this era (not based on anything other than my opinion). Everyone started making repetitive music.

Many producers started making repetitive music based on a few different factors. The good musicians have heard of Glass and the minimalist movement, and they know to take the underground music and make it popular by putting a spin on it for the masses (look at what Skrillex did for dubstep). The bad musicians weren't very good with the new tech (sequencers, drum loopers, arpeggiators) so their music came up repetitive as well. Thus, the techno wave was born. After techno died out, it led to shoegaze, then grunge, then the rebirth of techno as EDM. Minimalism as a whole died but it's tendrils are still prevalent.

In my opinion, techno is a direct derivative of minimalism. In fact, in 2012 Philip Glass acknowledged this and commissioned several modern artists to put a techno twist on his minimalist stuff. It's called REWORK. it's good. Great question.
