Just saw River's Edge, and, holy shit, talk about a movie aging badly. The subject is morbid, sort of terrifying, and instantly intriguing, which is what I assume accounts for all the positive press it got at the time of release. They started with a perfectly awesome concept and took it to a screenwriting seminar. The movie is so embarrassingly corny and insipid I apologized to the friend who sat through it with me. I couldn't get over how gritty and realistic the delinquents in the first Ninja Turtles movie seemed compared to this film's. It was like the writer's of Full House decided to make a movie about a murdered teenager rotting on a riverbank.
