I've read all but a few of them, and I have to say that this is a very UK/US centered list. Where is Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's "Stalker," for example? (I think the US name was changed, though.)

Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. We only see the aftermath of an alien visit, and the nature of the aliens is fundamentally unknowable. My favourite scifi novel.
Loosely adapted by Tarkovsky Stalker, arguably one of the classics of scifi cinema. It also informed the computer game S.T.A.L.K.E.R..
