I understand there are better mic's out there. For someone that doesn't need top of the line, its a good value buy for a casual/entry level person. Here are the links for those shopping mics.

It sounds really good. Couldn't justify it as I only stream very rarely so I got a cheap snowball instead.

When you say "work" I assume you mean "where I get paid" . There will be no "breaking in" - keep that in mind. There will be no, "and then I just made a lot of money". But there will be opportunities you can grasp.

If you want to make money, you first have to find out where they can be earned. As a starter, I'd recommend Fiverr.com - you can put yourself out and people can contact you, or you find someone in search of a voice actor on there.

So what do you need to deliver?
That depends oh so much on what you will be hired for. The "easiest" kind of jobs will properly be a commercial of various sort, where they look for "the average next door guy/gal", which is just you talking, as if you are talking to a friend - chill guy/gal who informs of something. From what I hear, that's the new trend in commercials.

That was location, and it was a market. Now you need to deliver something.

You need a few things:

  • Software to record yourself - get Audacity, since it's free and pretty easy to use.

  • A quiet place to record - as in dead quiet. When you want to get paid for your voice, you must deliver just that, and not the cars running by outside as well.

  • A microphone. Now this is like asking "who should I side with in soccer/baseball/basketball" - religion war.
There are two options, where the first is perfectly fine if you have a very quiet room, but the second will ensure some quality over the first one - you can use a USB microphone, or get an XLR microphone.

If you just want to start, and you want to be able to sell what you record, you need a high-end USB microphone. That would be the Apogee MiC or the Røde NT-usb - they cost... they do, but they deliver clean sound. Can you get a cheaper microphone - yes, but they might not sell...

The second option would be getting an external sound card, then an XLR microphone, and that would cost you.

  • Record with no echo. That means, when you have recorded into you new microphone, and you listen to it afterwards, you cannot hear the room - you cannot hear it's your living room / bed room / basement - it's just your voice, and nothing else. Go into a closet if you need a place with no echoes.

Ask away for specifics if you need more.

It really depends on how much you want to spend and what you're planning to do with your setup.

I personally use a Rode NT2-A with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface (or you could get the Solo and save 50 bucks, but I needed two input ports) and I am pretty satisfied with my setup - I've been using both of them for a whole bunch of paid audiobooks I've done over the years, so they've paid for themselves many times over.

I started out with a Blue Yeti myself, but I decided to change it as soon as I started getting more work. It's not a bad mic, but it's not stellar. When it comes to cheaper USB mics though I'd recommend the Rode NT-USB - my NT2-A broke down over the summer and I was supposed to be recording an audiobook, so I needed a decent replacement until my main mic got repaired. It's slightly more expensive than a Blue Yeti (goes for around $170, while the Yeti is around $100), but I think it's a better quality mic. I still keep my NT-USB at home to use for smaller work that doesn't require going to the studio.

u/djdementia · 3 pointsr/audioengineering

The sound quality of a separate audio interface is better than one of the USB mics. USB mics essentially cram a small audio interface into the mic itself. Since there is less room in there it often sacrifices some quality.

The bigger problem with most USB mics is that they don't have zero latency monitoring (a few models do have this, you'll know it does if you have to plug headphones into the microphone to monitor your recording, example this model: https://smile.amazon.com/Rode-NT-USB-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00KQPGRRE/)

It's a lot easier to get your volume levels correct if you have headphones on that you can hear yourself with no latency. You can listen to the computer output but there will be a slight latency which can be very annoying.

If you want to do a basic good quality setup here is what you need and some basic but good bang for the buck quality gear:

Wall of text in arrivo.

It's a cheap one from Amazon. Can't remember exactly which one. Wanna say it was like 15 bucks. It's not great. If I ever get into doing much more voice over work, I'll probably replace the arm and the mic with these from Rode (drool)

u/damnthisboxishot · 2 pointsr/makinghiphop

This is a hobby, $50 isnt a steep investment. You aren't going to like anything you record for about at least a year anyways, get the cheap mic.

edit: to answer the question you actually asked tho id go with this if you wanted to keep it around $200 Rode NT-USB

but if you want to invest, id suggest learn to use the $50 mic already linked, and then save for a proper set up well down the line.

https://www.amazon.fr/trepied-telephone/s?k=trepied+pour+telephone

I just ordered a keyboard with MX blues. I love the tactile clicky sound so I'm happy with my decision, I just want to find a good mic to go along with it. I settled on this Rhode NT USB mic https://www.amazon.com/Rode-NT-USB-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00KQPGRRE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451052593&sr=8-1&keywords=rode+nt-usb but the price is considerably higher than the Yeti, and I'm not sure if it will pick up the same amount of sound as the Yeti will. Any thoughts?

u/Javild · 2 pointsr/buildapcforme
This is probably as overkill as it gets before starting to lose performance.

This uses a custom cooling loop, it is not very hard to make since I used soft tubing, but if you don't want to use that, you can get 2 of THIS or THIS GPU and THIS CPU Cooler and just remove all the Custom Loop parts.

For the main monitor, I chose a 4K 144Hz monitor and 2 secondary 1440p 165Hz monitors which can also be used for gaming or can be used when you stream.

For the CPU I chose a 14 core i9 CPU, which has the best balance of cores and clock speed of the i9 CPUs, you could get more cores but the clock speed will drop a lot and so will your gaming performance.

Hi there, I actually happen to be a percussive acoustic player also. I've met Andy a few times, and I recommend you look into the Rode NT-USB. I own the NT-USB and the NT4 Andy likes to use, and the NT-USB does a great job at the price point. Here's a little bit of Rylynn while I wasn't exactly sober that was recorded from the NT-USB. It's a very cheap, practical, and logical solution to guitar recording. The slaps sound a tad bit weak because I was quite literally 5 feet away from the mic.

Yes, you can splice your video from a phone and your audio together. Download a DAW like Reaper to record from and add any effects you make like. Then use any video editor to cut the audio out of the video track and replace it with the file you created from the DAW. Little recording trick: Clap your hands three times after you start recording video and audio. This makes it very easy to sync the tracks up and cut out the claps when you're finished.

u/AStaton · 2 pointsr/baylor

Just a thought: Invest in a better mic. The quality of sound can make or break a podcast. if you're looking for a USB mic, I'd suggest this. If you have more of a budget for a mixer, I'd suggest this.

u/ChiMiGoGo · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I agree with u/MGsubbie, I did exactly that. I use a Rode-NT-USB on an arm as my microphone and some IEM's for listening. Nobody has ever complained about poor audio quality.

u/gabyred884 · 1 pointr/youtubers

I just picked up a [Rode NT-USB] (https://www.amazon.com/Rode-NT-USB-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00KQPGRRE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1526506838&sr=8-2&keywords=nt+rode+usb&linkCode=ll1&tag=thesysadminch-20&linkId=36cb209ceaf0e58a89cad9db949bf23f) and I love the quality. It has a great tone and has a good depth to it. It is a little pricey at $169 on Amazon but if you're going to be doing videos for the long haul I definitely think its worth the money.

While I was doing my research i also noticed a lot of people mention that they had a Blue Yeti from Blue Microphones and they liked it as well. This is also a USB mic and the sound quality is really similar (and the mic is about 50-60 bucks cheaper) but I just really liked how the Rode Mic sounded.. That's just personal preference. You can find this mic at around $100 so its still a little pricey but again, if you're going to be doing videos its still worth it.

If you're looking for something to use with a DSLR camera, I like the way the [Rode VMGO Shotgun Mic] (https://www.amazon.com/Rode-VMGO-Lightweight-Microphone-Super-Cardioid/dp/B00GQDORA4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1526507932&sr=1-1&keywords=rode+shotgun+mic&linkCode=ll1&tag=thesysadminch-20&linkId=35f8c1b5488c41dba8cf0a011e6d6db4) sounds. It has that full sound and this one comes in around a little under $80.

Finally if you're looking for something under $20 I would probably go with the [Boya By M1] (https://www.amazon.com/BOYA-Electret-Condenser-Microphone-Smartphones/dp/B00MP566OM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1526507786&sr=1-1&keywords=boys+by-m1&linkCode=ll1&tag=thesysadminch-20&linkId=c8648c47cac36d32bf6e84c547b8fdfa) mic. This is a lapel mic so its easily portable and for like $16 its a great starter mic.

I did my research for about 2 months because I was so indecisive on which type i wanted i get for my use case. Since I do Voice-overs I wanted to get something that's easily compatible with my laptop so thats why i chose the USB route. Keep in mind that audio quality is just as if not more important than the video quality.. If you're audio sucks, you won't keep long retention rates which means your videos won't rank as high which means less views and ultimately less subscribers.

Hope that helps!!

Ok :) Yeah exactly, it's really important! Ah ok. I use one of these and have found it really, really good honestly. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rode-Microphones-NT-USB-Microphone/dp/B00KQPGRRE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1506712467&sr=8-1&keywords=rode+nt+usb. For me it was expensive but it was worth it. I have a fan on and the PC is right beside me. I also have an MSI 970, the one with the fan problem so one goes jet engine mode every now and then. Mic cuts it all out, with some techno magic O_O The Vegas audio stuff is pretty good and simple, worth your time :) EQ and Compressor seem to normally suffice. You'll have to fiddle a bit to get it the way you want but if you play it by ear it's pretty straightforward, just make sure you save your presets hah.

Currently unfortunately I am using my motherboard's soundcard (DAC), and as Amp I use my Rode NT-USB (https://www.amazon.com/Rode-NT-USB-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00KQPGRRE) microphone line-in and control volume through the knob there.

I am still very much in the market for an external DAC & Amp with a total budget of about 200-300 dollars that pair nicely with the HD650's. Just don't quite know the matches made in heaven for that price range and for those headphones.

u/dhmnuts · 1 pointr/battlestations

I kinda need something that doesn't need to be right up in my face. Kinda off to the side close to my mouth.

Edit; I was honestly thinking about getting the microphone the OP has. I feel like the AT2020 picks up too much background noise. http://www.amazon.com/Rode-NT-USB-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00KQPGRRE/ref=sr_1_4?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1451992237&sr=1-4&keywords=rode

I'd stay off the Snowball completely, it doesn't offer nearly the same voice or built quality as the other microphones that you listed, even the Meteor. A Yeti would fit your needs well. It offers superior quality to the Meteor/Snowball and has a couple of features that you'll probably appreciate. It's not for nothing that so many content-creators use it.

Another choice would be a RØDE NT-USB - it might be slightly outside your budget but offers similar quality to the Yeti (if not slightly better) and matches your colortheme.

There's also the AT2020USB+. It doesn't come with a particularly fantastic stand or anything, so a boomarm of sorts would be a good investment alongside it. It probably offers the best quality out of all the microphones listed above, along with having the correct color of course.

Finally, the only place I could find the black Meteor was on the US Amazon store, but unless you're willing to pay import taxes that's going to be a costly experience. The Meteor is imo the undisputed value king in all this though, sounds very good for the price. I bought one myself when they were on sale a while back for LAN purposes etc where I can't bring my entire main-mic setup.

Hope that helps you out!

Echoing GreenChord. If you want to drop some cheddar, streamline production, and increase quality I have some suggestions.

Grab Xsplit pro - You can record system video/audio and mic audio at the same time. As well as being able to pause and restart the recordings at anytime by binding pause to a key. I suggest 0 on the num pad. https://www.xsplit.com/buy#form

Invest in a decent mic - This one served me well when I was running my YT channel (I stopped cuz you know...work 40 hours and social life ate that shit up)

https://www.amazon.com/Rode-NT-USB-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00KQPGRRE/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1487108191&sr=1-1&keywords=nt+usb+mic

here's the mic stand for it

Also consider a subscription to adobe creative cloud for access to all of their suite. Mainly Photoshop, Premiere and After Effects.

I know not everyone can afford this stuff, but if you are considering a high quality channel with easily digestible content, this is good stuff.

You can try just using your hand to redirect the sound waves from your mouth towards your ear, or you can try just closing one ear with a finger or hand. Sometimes you see people do it when they are doing licks or runs for pitch precision.

In terms of equipment, yes this is why musicians in studios wear headphones while singing. They can hear the background music and monitor their vocals as they are being recorded.

Equipment:

Audio-Technica AT2020USB PLUS Cardioid Condenser USB Microphone

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B5ZX9FM/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=22NJSL3TGXXEH&coliid=I2ZQ8TLHXXM7FL

Rode NT-USB USB Condenser Microphone

One of those USB microphones with built in headphone monitors should work for you. The Rode has better sound quality and comes with a pop filter. The Audio Technica is cheaper, comes with no pop filter, and is slightly bassy sounding. You will probably want a microphone stand and a decent pair of headphones as well.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1457017838&sr=1-1&keywords=Audio+Technica+m40x

These headphones are really nice and neutral sounding. Close-eared for good recording. The more expensive m50x actually are less neutral and will give a little bit of bass coloring to music.

Edit: If you start doing regular covers this will work well for that as well. You can download the audio files from youtube karaoke videos and then play them using Audacity as you record and monitor your vocals. Audacity is a free recording program that lets you also edit all your tracks. If you play instruments these microphones will do fine with those as well, but you'll have to be careful about placement and room reflections/modes/background noise etc.

  1. I think OBS is the most resource-friendly recording solution. I am able to record HD videos in 30 fps on a fairly medium office machine (Windows 7, i7, integrated graphics). Though to be fair, I have zero experience using either Macs or the Mac version of OBS. The OBS forums are usually a good place to look for solutions on technical issues.

  2. As long as you don't plan to record chat alongside your lesson, chat can run separately. I'd recommend at least two screens for that purpose. If you would like to show chat whenever you address chat questions, you can simply set up another scene in OBS that also shows chat. As soon as you start using scenes, I recommend using global sources instead of simple sources (look it up in the manual). Also, defining hotkeys for scene switching is a life saver for a smooth video. Also note that scene switching basically allows you to record videos in one take without the need for ex-post-edits.

  3. I haven't tried live streaming yet, but I have considered it. A platform like Twtch would be ideal, but it is restricted to gaming. Your best hope at the moment is probably Google hangouts (free) or Adobe Connect (not free). Hangout could look somewhat like this: https://youtu.be/Okwgrsb9WUA

  4. Hardware: Computer performance aside, a good microphone should be on the top of your list. What I mean by "good" is something like this

    or this

alongside a shock mount and proper stand. The quality of your voice transmission is the first thing people will judge you on, both positivey and negatively.

Which recording mode do you have it on? I wouldn't advise the H2N for acoustic guitar. A step-up from a Blue Yeti would be the Rode NT-USB which produces great results.

Turn off all the auto gain/limiter/compressor settings. The compressor will raise your noise floor by a lot, especially if it isn't gated and there is noise in your room already.

u/thepodcastdude · 1 pointr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

Going to add my top pick which is the Rode NT. $170 and it sounds so good and has a built in pop filter.

So you just got an animation of a subscribe not even an intro. interesting. Not really you shouldn't do that. you should write something down. There's a lot of you repeating yourself. Your energy is so low. I understand that you're not saying anything like exciting but you should show more of your own personality and not have such a monotone delivery. There's a lot of motivational speakers that talk about similar things that you're talking about.

I think you should study up on some motivational speakers to better improve. Marie Forleo is a good youtube that does motivational speaking. She also brands herself really well and her delivery is good. Also get rid of that white background. Find some place else you can record. it's just so bland you have to liven everything up. Everything right now just seems so stilted and quiet.

Awesome, I'm all about that melody.

Yeah, I need to pick up a mic. I work in a studio so I have access at work, did this last night right on my mac though. Thinking I'll pick up one of these. Rode NT-USB

u/CloAlc · 1 pointr/headphones

I've been looking at this: https://www.amazon.ca/Rode-NT-USB-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00KQPGRRE/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1469462162&sr=1-1&keywords=rode+nt+usb

But I don't think I need a REALLY good microphone considering I'll only be using it to talk to my friends on Skype.

The blue snowball isn't that expensive, is it a good microphone and would I need to get a pop filter? Or would I need a better microphone?

u/QuipA · 1 pointr/headphones

For content creation you don't any kind of headset at all. You need a condenser microphone and a set of monitor headphones.

Budget options start at ~175$

Decent monitoring headphones can be had for ~$100.

Also Rule 1 :P

I use a good quality mic.

Something like these really highly rated units like the Blue Yeti ($129) or Audio Technica 2020USB+ ($149) or Rode NT ($169). These are all USB units so you don't need an input box. If you were to get a Mic with a XLR input, you'd then need an Input box like the Scarlett 2i2 ($150). So USB Mic is the cheapest way to go.

These Mics listed above are truly outstanding and will pick up the sound of your amp really well. These are best-in class mics in the bang/buck category. The Audio Technica had the smallest footprint on a desk and is the crispest sounding (buy a $10 wind screen for it to help out with p's/s's). The Rode is warmer sounding, much larger and has a pop filter (which the other two don't). The Yeti has different mic modes, is large though and is considered a bit less refined than the other two but still fantastic sounding (buy a wind screen for this as well). Any of these 3 will do the job and no matter how much research you do, it'll always conclude to this group. THESE WILL BLOW AWAY ANY HD WEBCAM MIC OR IPAD/PHONE/LAPTOP MIC BY A HUGE AMOUNT!

For my use, I chose the 2020USB+ b/c of the MUCH smaller footprint and a sound that takes a backseat to nobody in this bang/buck "Pro Level" category:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3pfOcw7E44

AUDIO TECHNICA 2020USB+ (this AMAZONoffering comes with a FREE Pop Filter, but I bought a small wind screen for it ANYWAYS to reduce the desk footprint. I listed the link of the Wind Screen down at the end):

Audio Technica 2020 Wind Screen (I use this one--fits perfectly):

Since you're taking /u/klepperx's suggestions and saving some money, you could get a much better microphone and still stay under budget. Since you're getting a desk microphone, there's no need to get a headset (although the Cloud / Cloud II would definitely be the ones to get). What kind of fit and sound signature do you like? Do you need the headphone to be portable? What are your requirements for isolation? Here's my reccommendations at ~$100:

  • Brainwavz HM5 - Closed back, over ear, neutral sound, not easily portable due to lack of folding hinge. Can also be found as Yoga CD880 and NVX XPT 100.
  • AKG K240 Studio - Open back (provides much better positional audio than even most virtual surround, but leaks sound and provides little isolation from background noise), over ear, neutral sound, not portable due to amp requirement.
  • Sennheiser HD 558 - Open back, over ear, neutral sound, not portable due to lack of folding hinge. These are my current headphones, and I can't say enough good things about them. They're very similar to the HD598, with the main difference being the material that they're made of.
  • Sennheiser HD 598 Cs - Closed back version of the HD 598, which are virtually the same as the HD 558. I actually thought these cost more, so they're a great deal. Be aware that they will have a different frequency response (read: more bass) due to being closed-back.
  • Audio Technica ATH-AD500x - Open back, over ear, bright (mid forward), not portable due to lack of folding hinge.
