Some of my favorite Ballard:
RUNNING WILD - very short book (more of a novella) about a suburb where all the children have gone missing. It's a little predictable but still carries a nasty jolt. BTW - this cover is truly horrible.
CONCRETE ISLAND - this pairs well with HIGH RISE. It's a desert island story set on a traffic median where a crashed motorist is stranded.
HIGH RISE - my fave, it feels like a Cronenberg movie that was never made. An entire apartment complex descends into savagery and cannibalism.
CRASH - mean, nasty, brutish, short. It's a great maxi-dose of Ballardian despair.
Also, if anyone has Netflix Streaming, the Korean movie CASTAWAY ON THE MOON is a sort of anti-Ballardian film about a man who gets stranded on a crummy island in the middle of Seoul but instead of descending into savagery he decides he likes the isolation.
