i also got this book in december and started learning in october. it is quite difficult as it requires knowledge of cases but definitely accessible.
we use a couple of workbooks at uni called ‘ruslan russian 1’ which i would really recommend to you. theyre perfect for beginners and has all sorts of reading, writing and listening (comes with a cd / can access audio clips online) exercises. ill link them below, hope they might be of some help :) both books together would optimise your learning :)
