When you file, file in one direction only. And if you have one of those 4 sided files (with finer and finer grades) use the course one to get the nail shape, and use the finer sides to smooth off any roughness on the nail edge that you might not be able to see/feel. As well as using those finer sides to buff (lightly) the top of the nail to smooth the ridges.

Use a strengthening varnish like Sally Hansen to protect your nail before you even start with a basecoat. I use this one
