For those complaining that they missed out - you can get a RaspberryPI and 2 USB SNES controllers for less than the $80 they are asking for this mini SNES.

PI - 35.70

Case - 7.75

Controller 2 pack - 13.99

SD Card - 12.99

RetroPI OS - Free

Total: ~$70.00

Edit: as others have pointed out, you need a power brick. $10.

Also, here is a fantastic guide for building it.

Your phone has a microSD card slot, you could add 32GB of storage for $13.

(4) probably refers to the card speed class. Class 4 is the slowest microSD card speed, and Maxell isn't really a top-performing brand.

Suggest getting a Class 10 (UHS-I) card from Samsung or Sandisk. Both have 32GB cards for $13 on Amazon.

The SD "classes" were defined for use in digital cameras, not other devices. The reason I mention this is that the class defines only the write speed and says nothing about the read speed. Class 4 means that it has a 4MB/s write speed while Class 10 is 10MB/s.

Now that you know how class is defined... ignore it. Look at the actual read and write speed. If you're in the US, you can get a 32GB for $13 that has a write speed of 20MB/s (double a Class 10) and a read speed of 100MB/s. Odds are you'll be paying about the same for a Class 4 32GB.

I also don't know if you are serious, and this sub isn't for real advice, but nonetheless, here's how you can do it.

  1. Get one or more of a simple, easy to use mp3 player such as the SanDisk Clip Jam.

  2. Buy a name-brand (such as SanDisk, Samsung, or Kingston) microSDHC card up to 32 GB.

  3. Buy songs/tracks as DRM-free AAC files from iTunes and MP3s from Amazon.com. The tracks/files from those two services do not rely on having an account anywhere after you download them.

  4. Download and save the the tracks/files from iTunes and/or Amazon MP3 somewhere on your computer.

  5. Copy the files to the microSD card.

  6. Insert the microSD card into the player.

  7. Give the player to your parents.

  8. Show them how to use the player. Show how them to insert and remove the microSD card. To give them additional or different songs, exchange microSD cards with them as needed or give them additional microSD cards as needed.

    Alternative

  9. Install Chrome on their computer.

  10. Install and configure the Chrome Remote Desktop add-on on their conputer and your own computer.

  11. Test Chrome Remote Desktop to control their computer from your computer. You will use it at the very least to assist them if they have questions/need help.

  12. Show them how to how to use mp3 player and how to connect it to their computer.

  13. Either:

  14. Use Chrome Remote Desktop to connect and control their computer and using an account of your choice, open Amazon MP3 or iTunes, and buy and download the tracks.

  15. Or, teach them how to buy and download the tracks. Amazon and iTunes lets you create sub accounts that you control, so you could create a sub account for your parents and load money into it.

  16. Have them connect the MP3 player to the computer.

  17. Either transfer the tracks over to the player using remote control, or teach your parents how to do that.

If he's been talking about getting one, then you can't go wrong with a really basic kit. There are some kits with the micro-sd flash card but IMHO they charge too high of a premium for those. Here's a 32GB micro sd card I've used with no problems and very cost effective. From there, you will have to figure out what he wants to do with it. If he wants to run a media server for instance, you'll want to get a bigger micro sd card or get an external usb hdd. There are literally over 100 different sensors that can be used in Rpi projects so having some idea of what he wants to try would really help. Popular projects are things like pet feeders or light controllers or "magic mirrors". You can google and find detailed instructions and shopping lists for these types of projects. You can get him a starter set of common sensors like this or this for home automation. These kits are good if he doesn't know what he wants to do and just wants to tinker around but if he knows what project he wants to do, then it's better to get the basic kit and an amazon gift card so he can buy exactly what he needs.

A kit I always thought would be a cool gift for someone interested in Raspberry Pi is a retro gaming kit which will run old arcade games. The kit I linked has a usb drive with the game ROMs included but at a $10 premium. You can opt for the cheaper kit and download the ROMs from various sources online. This give him a something fun to start with and he can always pull the Rpi out and buy another flash and use it with sensors or other projects in the future.

Female driver here. Really surprised there are no dashcam comments yet! Well here ya go.

I got this one. It's super cheap, very obvious, (blinking lights), and honestly I think every driver needs one just in the event of an accident (it records inside & out, and is very easy to setup). But bonus, it shuts men up quick! I think in general, men are learning. But when you have one that starts with you, remind them that you are working and not interested, right away. If he persists, point to the camera and tell him he's recorded & will be reported, final warning.

You should know if it's coming with a micro SD card or not. A lot of used ones won't come with the card and you might need to buy one before you can start playing. This one is cheap and good if it's not coming with one.

"It comes with a game." - What game? And are you sure it's a cartridge and not coming preloaded?

If it is in fact a cartridge game then definitely use your current NNID. If it's a preloaded game then it might be more complicated.

I bought a used (replacement) one too, and one thing you should do after getting everything setup is go to the eshop and see if there is anything to download. I don't think it's supposed to carry over, but after I setup my NNID, I later found that I had several new games waiting for me to download that I had never purchased.

u/ssup3rm4n · 2 pointsr/Dashcam

you don't have to format the memory card. After reaching its limit, it will loop back to the beginning and delete the older files and re-write over them. I've got it set to record at 3 minute intervals. It records at about 237 MB every 3 minutes, or about 1.32 MB a second. It can record at about 6 hours on a 32 gig card, at 1080.

Here is a 3 minute video from the dash cam.

some basic video info

Edit: replaced youtube link for streamable

I am actually using this 32 gig card, since I gave away the other micro sd card. 32 gigs for 10 bucks isn't bad.

u/random12356622 · 2 pointsr/Dashcam

> The question is what parameters, functions etc. should I look for?

1080p means video resolution only, and tells you nothing about video quality.

Video quality is rated: Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor. In conditions of Day/Night/Shadow. There is also Black Sun - Sun gets blacked out, Exposure - Dark tunnel -> Full day night, and out of focus problem. (Too much sky, not enough hood is considered user error as much as Dirty window/dash cam.

> As a first time buyer I'm not willing to pay any more than €100 (that would be around $120).

  • B1W ($54.99 USD) + dashcamtalk review

  • A119 ($95 USD) + dashcamtalk review

  • This is the price for the dash cam only, you also need to purchase a Micro SD card. Avoid Sandisk Ultra not for dash cam use.

Many recommend High Endurance, MLC based Micro SD cards, with error correction. However these cards are in high demand and have become massively over priced. Example: Transcend High Endurance 32GB + adapter ($33 USD) <- Seen this as high as ($40~42 USD) for 32GB

So many are switching to cheaper, but less long lasting TLC based cards that seem good enough for now. Example: Samsung 32GB EVO Select Memory Card ($13 USD)

    > So far as I was leaning towards A119 model. What I really liked about it that it isn't eye catching and seems to have a good quick release system however I read some comments that it doesn't have very good build quality and might not last very long.

Both the B1W, and A119 are Video quality dash cams, Fair/Poor build quality, Lackluster parking mode.

A119 = Excellent video quality, basic video quality dash cam, additional features kinda meh. (Just FYI - Mini USB)

B1W = Good video quality, but has other features such as wifi/cellphone app, and other nice features to check out. (Just FYI- Micro USB)

    > All in all could you share with me your opinion/experience what cam would be the best choice for my budget?

So I would check out the reviews on Youtube/Dashcamtalk.

What you are looking at is: Build quality, or their opinion of build quality; Explanation of features and how useful/not useful they are; Parking mode - Automatic?/Buffered?/Low voltage cut off built in or hardwire kit required?; Video clips of: Day/Night/Shadow - look for exposure videos, and explanations of other problems. Bugs - A119 had some for v1s, B1W has some now, neither are good bugs, but not end of unit bugs. These all should be included in a good review.

There is nothing wrong with purchasing a budget/video quality dash cam the first time around. Most people do. As you get more used to dash cam ownership other factors start bothering you more. These shift in values cause people who liked the reasons they picked their first dash cams to become mostly negative reviews. I highly suggest fully researching not just the dash cams in your price range, but also dash cams outside of your price range, and why others think they are worth buying.

    ---

Anyways, other dash cams that are with in your price range are:

  • Thinkware F50 1CH ($90 USD) Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Fair video quality: No wifi/cellphone app: - Fair video quality should be seriously looked at, as it is not as good as Good/Fair or Good. Common complaint is G sensor too sensitive on lowest setting, and can not be disabled. Price structure is: Dashcam + Micro SD card (included) = price.

  • BlackVue DR450 1CH ($120-239 USD) Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good/Fair video quality: - This dash cam is newer so it is unknown about the G sensor.

These listings may or may not include the Micro SD card/hardwire kit (for parking mode.)

    ---

I have to say hardwiring/parking mode becomes worth it for most people over time, I would consider getting it later on. 99% of the time when you aren't in your car and someone damages it, they have incentive to drive off, vandalism/accidents included.
u/Xarian0 · 2 pointsr/arduino
  1. No, the Teensy has a DAC (digital to analog converter) built in. You will only need separate components if you want an amplifier for bigger speakers (you probably won't). The prop shield you linked also has an amplifier.
  2. You can use a microcontroller with pre-soldered headers (like the one you linked). Otherwise, no. Soldering is kind of like writing - you just need to do it sometimes. There are techniques you can use to make it easier; if you're inexperienced, there's a good chance you're making things harder on yourself.

  3. Mini Power Switch - ok, but might not fit your wires without soldering

Jumper wire - Those are rigid, not really suitable for your project. You want something like this. I use them; they are good as long as you stick with the rigid pins/sockets and don't try to cut them in half to solder onto the thin wires.

Buttons - ok, but check that their size is what you want

    Resistors - ok

LEDs - wouldn't you want colored ones?

    LED holder - ok

    Breadboard - ok

LED driver - if you use one of these, you won't need resistors (they are built into the module). Make sure you find a driver that has enough channels for your project.

Teensy Header Kit - you won't need these, and they're made for the 3.2 anyway (much smaller)

Prop Shield - Useful but be careful about compatibility with the 3.6: you will still need wires to make up for the fact that it doesn't overlap completely with the 3.6. Check here. Notice that the pins are 1x14, 1x14, 2x5, and 1x4. You can make a frankenstein with stackable headers, but I'd recommend using a combination of these and focusing on wires + extra breadboards if you have to. You will have to solder.

    Teensy w/ headers - ok

MicroSD card - don't waste your money on cheap, small SD cards made by weird off-brand companies. Anything below 16 GB is the same price - around $6.50. You can spend an extra $2 and bump to a 32 GB

    You forgot speakers.

u/stan_qaz · 2 pointsr/pihole

I tried using an older Pi to host my pi-hole and compared it to a newer 3b+ and found no real difference in DNS lookups, but updates and the web interface were a lot slower and some things would run out of memory on the really old Pi. Ordered a second 3b+ and replaced the old Pi.

Power supply quality is critical, get a good one from Adafruit or Canakit.

A case is important to protect the Pi from damage, something simple is good enough, a dog-bone style works well and is a bit cooler if you have a safe place to mount the Pi, a more fully enclosed one is safer if the Pi is going to be banging around with a bunch of other stuff. Cooler really doesn't matter in a home install unless you are going to add something to your Pi that will cause it to run hot, fans, heatsinks and such really aren't needed.

SD cards are cheap, Samsung or Sandisk 32 GBs are excellent and you save pennies by going cheaper or smaller.

For Ethernet there is little difference in cables for the lengths you'll be using, and standard cable will work, get one a couple feet longer than the minimum and you'll have slack to work with.

So Pi, power supply, case, SD card and Ethernet cable will get you set up with a very nice Pi-hole.

u/taxxus · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

Fair enough. Many microSD cards come with a standard SD sized adapter, and should work fine.

I like samsung cards, but that's just personal preference. I like the adapter option so I can swap the card between printers at home, work, wherever.

I picked this Samsung 32GB (more than adequate for printing) on a whim since I was grabbing a few other items, but you can get the 64 for a few bucks more with prime shipping Apparently >32GB is incompatible.

Raspberry Pi is a series of small cheap basic computers. The latest is the Raspberry Pi 3.

One Retropie distrubution that I've found easy to setup is to use Recallbox. You will need a PC to set it up.

You should probably get a Raspberry Pi 3.

A micro SD card:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MicroSD-Adapter-MB-ME32GA-AM/dp/B06XWN9Q99/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1496809133&sr=1-1&keywords=micro+sd+card+32+gb

One or two USB SNES Controllers. This should cover most 16bit systems and down.

You might need some other things like an HDMI cable and a micro usb charger for the power cord if you don't already have those. You possibly might need a usb keyboard laying around for setup. You are going to have to find your own roms (game images)

u/Remyhawk · 2 pointsr/3DS

Hello friends,

I'm getting my first new 2DS XL and was hoping for some recommendations on SD cards. I was looking at the following:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XWN9Q99/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073JWXGNT/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was looking at these two things, although the official Nintendo site recommends the Sandisk Extreme which is:

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-microSDHC-UHS-I-SDSQXAF-032G-GN6MA/dp/B06XWMQ81P/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1509988553&sr=8-3&keywords=32+gb+sandisk+extreme+micro+sd+card

but it's slightly more expensive than the original Sandisk one I posted so if the original one works, I would rather go with that.

But those were my ideas. Maybe if someone has a better recommendation or can confirm these are the best ways to go? Also, I notice that people are using even bigger cards as long as they're formatted properly, is there a recommendation for those and how hard would it be to reformat it properly? It sounds way more convenient than having multiple 32gb cards to swap!

Thanks again!

The biggest issue I ran into with the RasPi/scrcpy was it chugging on a large video window. I had to lower the screen resolution to 800x600 (that projector can only display 848x480 anyway) and tell scrcpy to go full screen. I could pull a 1024x768 video frame from the quest and it appeared to resize to 800x600 just fine.

Here were the command line args I used:

scrcpy --fullscreen --no-control --bit-rate 2M --crop 1024:768:288:336

I was going to say "AFAIK Coiling Dragon hasn't yet had any official (legal) ebooks yet. Edit: Others have said that it is in the process of still being published, and that could certainly be the case... However the links from the goodreads will likely fail (for amazon at least) even when the ebooks do come out (until they are updated) b/c the URLs for amazon don't use title names for anything other than window dressing it is the /dp/#### that matters:

Could you tell me what to look for to make sure I’m buying high quality SD cards? I have a Pi running PiHole 24/7 and while it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if it went down, I’d like to have as much up time as possible.

[This] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XWN9Q99?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) is the most recent one I bought, but that was honestly just because I needed something and this seemed like a decent card at a decent price.

Nope, not really as far as the switch is concerned.

This is a slightly higher spec card with a lower price. I use the 256 gb version in mine, I’m biased towards Samsung cards though. You can’t go wrong with either one.

I got Yi Home cameras and some outdoor housings. Those two with extension cable and SD cards costs around $65 each. No subscription needed. I’ve had them up all year through snow, way below freezing temperatures and extreme heat with no issues. The housing I used is different, and it actually added a glare when the night vision is on, but my neighbor has the ring outdoor camera and out footage quality is extremely similar if not the same. Yi does make an outdoor camera, but it wasn’t out by the time I got this set up, but it works too well to replace

Camera - $35.99

Housing - $14.99

Extension Cable - $9.99

SD Card - $6.99

I'm not sure how you're defining the term "main games of each old console". If Playstation, Sega CD, and TurboGrafx CD are desired, these games are in the hundreds of megabytes (maximum being 650mb).

Also, if you wanted to create a very slick user interface (video previews, high quality boxart, etc), those assets take space too.

Here are my go-to cards:

If she's getting into python and programming, I'd suggest a Raspberry Pi 3B+ Kit, 32gb MicroSD Card, and book on using Python and Raspberry Pi for your own projects. It will show your support of her new endeavor and give her something to both practice and learn. Maybe toss in a class on automation in Python?

Micro SD make sure its not SDXC, and not larger than 64gb. otherwise some adapters does not read. not to mention if its SDXC then you will have to change the memory format to Fat32.

so I suggest dual slot incase you need more room. and also get 16-32gb Micro sd Class 10 U1 SDHC. because some 64gb comes in SDXC which in some cases you need to format it.

and some people buy whatever they find and plug and play with no issues.

however the following works with 0 issues

I use this Kingston 32gb

my friend uses Samsung 32gb

Cheaper to just get a 32 gb evo microsd

Copy the entire contents of your memory card to your PC, replace the old memory card with the new, larger one, and copy the contents to the new one. Done!

Edit: if you're looking for advice on picking a memory card, I recommend a single slot micro SD to MS Pro Duo adapter in conjunction with a micro SD card of a reputable brand. If you're located in the US, you can get a 32 GB Samsung card for $10 or a 64 GB SanDisk card for $15 via Amazon, and I'm sure you can find reasonably priced cards at Wal-Mart or the like. (There are dual slot MS Pro Duo adapters available, which let you combine two micro SD cards into a single, higher capacity card, but they're more finicky than the single slot adapters. I don't specifically recommend against them; lots of people use them with minimal to no issue. They're just cheap enough that you can wait until you need to combine two cards to purchase a dual slot adapter. Better to get maximum reliability in the short term, IMO.)

Yes. I'm currently using https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XWN9Q99/ref=twister_B071R715MZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. It's pretty reliable for me and good for mini projects.

I had the samsung ones "fail" a few firmwares back, but a reformat and firmware update magically restored them from the dead ;)
