Running distros from USB flash drives is something I love. Reasons:

I have a 32GB USB and I am trying to make the GPT partition using the Windows Disk Manager.

So, I formatted the USB and I still do not see the option to convert it to GPT. I can see the option (through grayed out) when I right click on my current HDD but nothing shows up when I right click on my USB. Do I need to mark it as active?

This one is rated at 150MB/s read and about 60MB/s write. If you want something faster, the Sandisk Extreme USB is also on flash sale for $16.75. The Extreme is rated for 245MB/s read and about 100MB/s write. I have the Extreme (and in fact just ordered another one with this sale) and it is noticeably faster than any of my other USB3 flash drives. The rated read and write speeds are legit, and it works great especially when I'm copying large virtual image files. Can't speak for the OP but it does seem like a good drive for this price is your needs aren't as... extreme.

a led light is useful if DJing in low light situations!

flash drives are a pretty safe bet too!

There's no point in prefering usb2 over usb3, as it is backwards compatible.

Just make sure the flash drive(s) you get actually takes advantage of usb3, many while claiming to be usb3 perform abysmally. Prefer something like this for instance, which while it is a bit old, it's blazingly fast.

Xubuntu on VirtualBox runs relatively fast. I have the image on this USB device and it seems just as fast as running off the SSD. If I have something large to build I will go plug the usb key into my desktop so I can allocate more cores. As it is, I use 2 cores and 1.75GB ram with VirtualBox on SP3.

Sure - here's the 32gb one for $30. You can get the 64gb for $50. There's another model (linked on that same page) with similar performance and 128gb for $99.

EDIT: Also, did you get Windows to boot off the USB drive, btw?

You are right, I do want something that is semipermanent. I went with your suggestion on USB 3.0 and after doing a bit of research felt that this was good enough:

I went with the 32GB / 245MB/s version.

I been using Asus Oplayer with moore services for year. it aging and he stutter a 1080 movie with a lot of movements more and more.

I got Firestick(not TV) and rpi2.

Rpi2 run much faster than Firestick. after I figure out SD card is slow.

If you end up going with rpi2 get a fast USB stick load the Kodi on.. SD card is slow as useless. May be there are other SD cards that work better.. I got this one and sucked. So I went with this.. it install fast and very fast UI.

You'll still need SD card to boot the pi. I use OSMC and it have option to install to USB stick.. All you do is use their program, tell it you want to install on USB Stick. The OS and image will be loaded on SD card.

Install Stick on rpi2, install SD card on rpi2 and boot and let it do it thing.

They should put mSSD slot on next version of pi.
