Xlr cables are for audio. You need a midi (HMIDIG-6) to USB cable or a midi cable and a female to USB adaptor since the focusrite doesn't have a midi input.

Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

If you only want to use the keyboard for controlling software, you'd only need the one cable.

u/enki1337 · 3 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

If you want to use your midi keyboards with a DAW, you could always get a cheap midi-USB converter.

u/Nordicskiah · 3 pointsr/piano

Ditto. I bought THIS 4 weeks ago for a 88-key MIDI. I have put it through moderate use since - couple hours a day, moving it around, tugging on it some. Works great. No complaints.

u/altdecay · 3 pointsr/makinghiphop

You'll need something like this if you're going straight to your computer (MIDI to USB)

I own a FCB1010 as well and it's been really good to me.

If you don't have anything with midi to usb already you can get a cheap POS converter like this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0017H4EBG and if you want it to look clean you could probably squeeze it into the case if your handy with a soldering iron.

Or just make what your looking for from scratch if your familiar with arduino etc

u/DeepFriedFriend · 3 pointsr/drums

Your kit is actually from Guitar Hero, not Rockband. Looks like the same as I have, so it should have a MIDI out port. All you need is a MIDI-to-USB cable (example). The kit sends out standard MIDI drum signals, so any software synth will do.

u/the_hamsterman · 3 pointsr/volcas

It doesn't look like the itrack Dock has 5 min midi. You might plug a cable like this in to the USB port, but I haven't had any experience with this. http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

You’re probably looking for something like this

MIDI is a port you can find in the back that looks like this. Some keyboards come enabled with a standard usb printer cable, but you can find converters pretty easily.

u/msh4k3 · 2 pointsr/edmproduction

you need a midi connection? http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Converter-Music-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

load up drivers boom bang you can use the keyboard as a device on your pc, but you need a daw or some program to use it in!

u/orokro · 2 pointsr/arduino

Here's one of the projects I recently did with the MIDI breakout board, code included!

http://www.gmiller.net/2014/09/midi-theremin/

And you will need one of these, if you don't already have one, and intend on controller PC/MAC based synthesizers, such as Garageband or FL Studio. http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

I would really suggest that you try using a keyboard without any built-in sounds and mess around with a program like Reason. With Reason, you can easily create individual sounds for your MIDI keyboard to control - anything from drum kits to pianos to synthesizers to full orchestral sounds.

This isn't a very exciting video, but it shows you some of the different sounds that just one of the built-in instruments in Reason can make: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuT-QfFcIsQ

As far as the keyboard is concerned, I guess there are a few questions to answer - how big do you want it to be? How heavy or light do you want the keys to be? Do you want some knobs on it that you can use to control things in your software?

I guess I might go for something in the M-Audio Oxygen series as a beginning keyboard. Then again, maybe that's overkill - if you're in the states you can probably pick up a used keyboard from craigslist with MIDI functionality for real cheap. It's hard to go wrong with MIDI - it's pretty basic stuff, almost any keyboard can handle it.

Oh, so in order to connect it to your computer you probably need to get a MIDI to USB adapter of some sort. All this means is that you can plug something into the MIDI port in the back of your keyboard and plug the other end into the USB port of your computer. You can then use it to control your software.

If you get something new like one of the M-Audio devices i linked to above, they will already have a USB port built-in to the device, so you won't need a MIDI-USB converter, just a USB cable.

Either way though, you'll be fine. Good luck!

Check out FL Studio. Great beginner program. Although if you can't afford that, you can check out Caustic (Android app that does a fantastic job for a song editor, and very simple to understand.) and do a -shitton- of tutorials.

I suggest also checking out a few books on drums and such, I have one which is about how to program and think like a drummer. Aimed at older drum machines, but certainly valid in FL Studio.

Look into dropping about 100 bucks into a midi keyboard, they're pretty sweet and make melodies and such much easier to create, in my experience.
Check out the akai series, they make good low-end midi keyboards.
(akai lpk25)
(akai mpk mini)

I have the second one and have played with the first. Both solid and super cheap to get into.

There are others, but those are the ones I have experience with.

Also, for the love of all that is friendship and magic, either buy FL Studio or make it work with just the demo. The demo keeps you from opening projects back up, so you'll just have to keep it running.

If you have an old yamaha keyboard, or want to use that instead, buy a midi to usb converter for about 5 bucks. It'll be a cheap midi keyboard to use and it should have a lot more keys to mess with than the akais I linked, but the price is a bit weirder. Velocity is over 100 bucks typically, unless you're getting used. Check craigslist and friends for super-cheap keyboards.

Finally, check out Warbeats and look through their music theory tutorials. They're very legit and easy to understand. Mostly, check out scales, chords, and basic basslines. Those are the most important bits to know.

But, most importantly, WORK. Put in at least an hour or two a day into making beats. Even if it's not all at once, you need to always be making more beats. It's going to suck, you'll hate what you make, you'll want to stop. Don't stop. If you do it every day for a few hours and make a beat, refine it, get it critiqued, you'll get better. After a year or two you'll be pretty good.

The more you pour into it, the more you'll get out.

Ah, I see; thanks. This is the one I bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017H4EBG/

So I guess I need to first find a driver for it, then?

u/misterdirector1 · 1 pointr/synthesizers

I recommend something like this for starters; for multiple synths, look into something like the MOTU Microlite, which is what I have. Very cheap used.

It will work just like a VST, just make sure your track in the DAW and your synth are on the same MIDI channel. You will be able to draw in notes.

u/lewdite · 1 pointr/MusicElectronics

I do, i crie for teh poor yuth who get tricked into paying more for less! Even if you could find a midi controller for an appropriate price (seriously, 64 keys plus should be under a hundred, not $250+), I implore you, save your money... Buy something that will enrich your life. You are better off drawing in midi notes on the computer (or actually writing music down). It's only marginally better than using your typing keyboard because you get the shape of the keys and some shitty representation of "velocity."

This is the unadulterated truth. Now regardless... If money is your ultimate restricting factor... why the fuck are being so discerning? It sounds like you're best off going on Craigslist and finding the cheapest thing with a keyboard attached and using that, you'll figure out everything I've explained to you on your own. "B-but Lewdite, it needs to have USB to c-c-connect to my compyooter"

Note this only works on PS4, PS3, X360, and Wii. The XBOne does NOT work this way.

You unfortunately have to run it through a PC.

Get a USB to MIDI cable, as well as the RB3 MIDI Pro adapter.
http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Converte.../dp/B0017H4EBG

Then you need a program called: MIDI-OX http://www.midiox.com

You then need to configure MIDI-OX to remap the USB MIDI to the other adapter. This video will walk you through it.

Win 10 pro and this cable https://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG and don't worry I appreciate our help I try re-initializing keyboard

u/sacremates · 1 pointr/piano

Yamaha keyboards are great, they're designed to mimic an acoustic piano. They have all the functionality you've mentioned, but if you want a keyboard that has lots of sounds then maybe a Casio.

Your headphones should work with just about any keyboard, you might need to get an adapter to plug it in.

MIDI is also a common functionality, you'll need to buy a converter to plug it into your computer.

You can probably find anything that's on Sweetwater on Amazon or Ebay for cheaper, Sweetwater just has great info.

u/zeroblitzt · 1 pointr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

Try looking on amazon for a USB to MIDI cable, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

my best suggestion is to record everything you do, and then listen back frequently and learn from your mistakes.

u/TheWisable · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

Also one thing. I dont have much experience with advanced audio setups ( I only use regular 3.5mm jack speakers and a usb headset :P) so Im not quite sure how your MIDI out device plugs in. I have looked around and dont think these can be plugged into mobo. Again I know very little about this.
http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG
Did find this link though for a converter. Maybe this would be a way to connect? Again I am really not sure about this... Will try to research some more and figure this one out.

u/TheJPdude · 1 pointr/synthesizers

Something like this should work:

https://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

Also, if you have a DAW, find some awesome, free VSTs. PG8X, U He Tyrell, Synth1 all come to mind. You can do lots on these alone.

u/ThatsALovelyShirt · 1 pointr/ableton

> to capture MIDI you need to plug your instruments in via USB port or something similar.

Some midi devices (especially older ones) do not have USB ports, but instead one of these kinds of connectors. To interface them with a machine, you need a USB<->MIDI converter, like this.

That being said, yes, the Audio interface won't also have a midi interface. Some of the older ones do, but the newer ones generally don't.

u/45Hap · 1 pointr/synthesizers

could I just use a midi / usb converter? something like this

https://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

u/BillytheGoatFucker · 1 pointr/edmproduction

This is the cable I got. It seemed like the most inexpensive option, but I'm not sure if I got the right thing.

u/Stickells54 · 1 pointr/Guitar

If I understand correctly, I would need this to connect the FCB to my PC?

u/goddamnsam · 1 pointr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

okay wait, just making sure: i have this. i plug the "IN" part of the cable into the "OUT" part of my drumset, the plug in the USB, right?

I've tried both IN and OUT; nothing happens.

if it's not receiving MIDI data, then what do i do? clearly it's meant for it, so how do i set it up for it to receive it?

u/mennonite · 1 pointr/IWantToLearn

If you can't read sheet music, and have a midi keyboard and a midi cable or midi to usb cable, then I suggest you download Synthesia and a midi file for let it be, and learn guitar hero style.

EDIT replaced shit midi download site

u/Logg · 1 pointr/Music

You can buy keyboards pretty cheaply off of craigslist (30-80 bucks if you're going really cheap, mine was 60 and it works just fine). If it has midi out, then you'll be able to use it with your computer, and Synthesia itself is technically free, although I found it worth the $25 for the extra features.

I don't know what sort of online lessons you're using, or if they're effective, but if you want to learn piano, I suspect this route would be a mile above the method you're going at.

u/Tommonen · 1 pointr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

Yes you can use it(maybe just the keyboard, pitch bend and mod wheel tho, usually synths like this that arent meant to be full blown midi controllers doesent send midi messages from sliders/pots or other buttons), but you will something to connect midi ports to your computer(as the synth doesent seem to have an usb port). Your options are audio interface with midi ports, midi interface or midi to usb converter like this https://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

Then you need to enable the instrument on pro tools etc, you can find that stuff on pro tools manual, internets or youtube. Its simple, but this midi stuff might seem bit complex at first before you understand more how it works.
