Not sure how fast will an external HDD work but I'd recommend the best value for money upgrade which is Seagate's FireCuda 2TB SSHD that was released just a few months ago. Not only you get a huge storage boost, you also get better loading times. I swear my Witcher 3 loads now take 20-30 seconds less

Any 2.5" (laptop-sized) hard drive that is 9.5mm in height or smaller should work. I recommend the 2.5" Seagate FireCuda (which comes in 2TB size), since it will give your PS4 a minor speed boost in addition to a storage increase. The FireCuda is a "hybrid drive", which means it contains a combination of both a standard HDD and a small SSD. In simple terms a hybrid drive automatically loads frequently accessed files onto the SSD to improve speed. A hybrid drive would still be slower than a SSD only hard drive, but would be much more reasonably priced. I recommend googling "hybrid hard drive" if your interested in getting a better understanding of what it is.

Also keep in mind that the upcoming 4.5 update is going to allow external HDD to be used as storage for your system. That would be another possibility in the near future to increase your storage, but since the update is currently in beta I would recommend waiting for the official release before making any purchases.

That's a fine choice for a standard HDD, you can also step-up to the Seagate Firecuda which is a hybrid drive and will be a bit faster in titles that you play regularly thanks to the solid-state cache on the drive. You could also wait for firmware 4.50 to release and use any USB 3.0 HDD externally which will afford you much more space.

That is their latest and fastest model. It was just released about a month ago.

I replaced with an internal. It's a little more expensive, and more time consuming to set up, because you have to make a whole system backup, but I think it's faster in the long run. It puts everything on one volume, so you don't have to mess with menu settings to move installs from one drive to the other.

This is the hard drive I put in my PS4. 2tb, sshd, works great. There are a few negative reviews that specifically say that some folks had issues when using it with a ps4 but I've had it in for 2 years and it's worked absolutely fine.

It has 8GB of flash that it uses for caching frequently accessed data. You get a lot of the benefits, but 2TB for <$100. Since you're usually only heavily playing one or two games at a time, it works really well.

It works well on PS4, however zone loading times can be a bit slow on the stock hard drive. IF you find the loading times too long, upgrading the PS4's hard drive to a hybrid or SSD drive will make a huge difference.

Upgrading internal storage is not that hard, and in my opinion, 100% worth it. For a while, every time I got a new game I had to delete another, which really sucked. Don't bother with the SSD, just get a hybrid, I put this in mine and just put it in a friends Slim. I couldn't tell you if it made a difference for the Pro only because I put it in immediately. My friends swears there is improvement in navigating while in game and loading games but it is his opinion.

Get the SSHD and don't waste your money on an SSD. They're only $80 from amazon, which is an amazing deal. A standard hard drive is around $80 for 2tb so there's no reason not to get the Firecuda. The speed will be better but not night and day faster. Remember the main upgrade is more space. I've had 2TB since PS4 launch and have about 500GB left. It's super nice to have all that space for games.

I'm not saying this is for sure the problem but that would be the best way to verify aside from swapping the system entirely. It's very easy to swap drives in the Pro, just like the original model and Slim.

The sidebar guide is still applicable from a software standpoint, the Seagate FireCuda seems to be the new popular drive upgrade. But any 2.5-inch SATA drive that is 9.5mm or less in height will work in the PS4. Externals still tend to be cheaper but opening the case makes you lose out on the warranty (which you'd probably want if you are indeed dealing with hard drive failure this go-around).

Basically if you upgrade the drive all you need to do is backup your current software if you don't want to redownload anything and pop the PS4 System Software onto a flash drive to install to the new drive. If you've got PS Plus all of your saves are stored on the cloud so you don't have to worry about backing those up if you choose the re-downloading your games route.

Well, this HDD was on sale for $20 off yesterday, only $69.99, meaning you could have gotten a 2TB drive for only $10 more than the 1TB version of the same HDD. It is one of the most often used HDDs for PS4 internal drive upgrades.

This is the drive I bought for my PS4. It comes in an enclosure, and is really meant to be used as an external USB drive. However, since I was removing the 1TB drive from my Pro, I just took the 2TB drive out of the enclosure and put the 1TB drive in it so I could have that extra 1TB as backup storage for my gaming PC.

If you buy the same drive I bought, or any other 2.5" drive that comes in an enclosure, keep in mind that removing the drive from the enclosure for use in the PS4 voids the warranty. Fortunately, I bought my 2TB drive on July 31, 2015 and have used it in two different PS4s and it is still working great.

After you install the hard drive, just download your games from the PS Store (or put the disc in). I recommend you make sure your game saves are backed up too. Back them up to the cloud or a USB device before the transfer.

If you have a laptop and are looking for a new 2.5 drive, I'd suggest this. Seagate have always been my favorite Hard Drive makers, and this 2 TB should do the trick for you.
Now if you have a desktop, don't use a 2.5 drive unless its Sata (SSD). Use a 3.5 drive like this or this. Both are solid, I'm personally getting the Seagate 3tb, but go with whats best for you.

I installed this SSHD last night replacing the DOA 2TB Seagate HDD in my 500M LE PS4 Pro. The packaging was promising; standard brown box, drive sealed in a ESD-safe bag, and two black plastic holders to keep the drive from movement. Quiet mechanical operation and was actually pleased with the initial load time of Fortnite.

Some people prefer SSD’s strictly for reliability which is perfectly fine, however justifying the much higher price for lackluster performance improvements was difficult for me.

144Hz display, the wanted 8-core Ryzen cpu, and it fulfils the specs I listed above. You can of course swap the case with the NZXT S340, but I needed an ITX case to properly crate that build list. It would be nice to replace the X370 board with a X470 board, but I did not see an ITX X470 board in the shops yet.

For the HDD, the Firecuda is probably your best choice. There are not many modern 2.5" HDDs.

Cooling will be problematic here. The Shadow Rock LP is not bad, but is certainly not the cooler to overclock this cpu. If you get the case with a large tophat you could use an AIO cooler instead. According to the specs https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103234 will fit exactly, but there are some alternatives.

I initially went with a GTX 1070 Ti and scratched your max budget. You might want to do that as well. But if you are convinced the RX 580 is enough then that will help staying in budget, especially with AIO cooler and HDD added to the price. And the RX 580 is not as overpriced anymore as it was till basically just now.

My understanding - and I'm sure if I'm way off base here, someone will correct me - is that the PS4's CPU and bus speeds mean that there actually isn't an enormous bump in speed from a high-end HDD to an SSD. You won't notice as much of an improvement in quality by going SSD as you do in a typical PC upgrade. A great place to check on that is over in /r/PS4 or /r/PS4Pro. Most comversations about SSDs over there tend toward "not worth it", and most people say you can do just as well with an external drive storing your game data. For the PS4, hybrid drives seem to be a good balance of price and performance without spending more $$ than the upgrade justifies.

Amazon has a decent [Seagate] 2TB hybrid HDD for under $100. You can probably go even cheaper by shopping around.

I religiously cleaned my PS4 with canned air and vacuuming the side vents. Well for the last year or so the fans would get spinning so fast, I feared I was calling in my own 'Airstrike', playing COD. So I ended up following a YouTube on disassembly and did a full clean out, pulling it apart cleaning out the heat sink, fan, and power supply. Sure enough, it had buildup that couldn't clear the heat sink.

After the clean, the PS4 is dead silent and running perfectly. I should have done the cleaning earlier, but just never got around to it. Its honestly still weird, I find myself checking it a lot of the time now, just to make sure the fans are still spinning!

I had the same issue. I was back and forth between internal & external. Storage for the money...external is the way to go. However, I have on OG PS4 with only 2 USB ports. One is always in use for the VR, the other, typically a charging cable for the AIM or other external device. I went with a 2 TB Internal drive.

No not as an internal, although it is a 2.5 in it will be to thick once you remove it from the external housing. It will work as an external hard drive to compliment you PS4. 2 TB is really the max you can go and remain completely internal. This Seagate or this WD are both good and cheap options. Depends on your preferance. I prefer Seagate, others will say WD.

  HDD's are mechanical so they are prone to eventual failure, but as long as you don't drop it you should be fine for a long while. Then again, sometimes there's just a bad batch of them. I'd recommend Western Digital if you go with an external HDD.

No problem. Most SSHDs go up to 2 TB minimum and will come in the 2.5 inch that you would need to fit in your system. I have a SSD in one of my PS4 Pros and a SSHD in the other. Honestly unless you are doing a side by side comparison the difference isn't that noticeable due to the SATA speed of the PS4. I would recommend getting a 2TB FireCuda drive.

Honestly, getting a Pro and using it on a 1080p TV isn't bad. It's what I did and I'm rocking a 9 year old 50" 1080p Plasma TV still. Most games will do super sampling as long as the developers have patched the game to use the extra power from the Pro.

The other commonly overlooked feature is the ability to stream in 1080p and 1080p 60fps directly from the PS4 Pro. This is nice to have if you're someone who is a casual streamer or want to capture some video for friends or personal projects. Especially if you're not going to invest in a capture card and PC to do all the fancy streaming work.

Also, upgrading the HDD is an option but a 2TB SSD is expensive at around $600-700. Even a 1TB SSD is still $300+. Working with large data sets would certainly be more CPU intensive. And the games you are looking to play are not incredibly demanding, but if you're looking to keep the machine for 4 years, its probably worth getting high end specs just to ensure it stays modern for years.


If you're looking for a bit more power, it may be worth pushing your budget up a bit to get the Acer Predator Helios 300 for $1050. It is more powerful than your other options with a GTX 1060 dedicated graphics card. It also has a Quad core i7, 16gb of ram and a 256gb SSD. There is another storage slot inside to add a 1TB HDD which I think would be an excellent choice if you need more storage. It has a 1080p IPS display as well, and is known to have pretty good cooling.

If you want a bit better build quality, maybe look into the Eluktronics N850 for $950 which comes with a Quad Core i7-7700HQ and a GTX 1050Ti. It also has 8gb of ram and a 128gb SSD. There is another storage slot to add a SATA Hard drive, and a ram slot to upgrade the ram in the future if you would like. It's known for it's well built chassis and excellent cooling.

You can buy a 1TB 2.5'' SATA HDD for just under $50, or a 2TB SATA SSHD for $85. SSHD's have similar speeds to HDD's but have no moving parts. Make sure to buy a 2.5'' SATA drive for a laptop.

I have a 2 tb SSHD with 8 gb of flash storage. It works really nice, but it’s not that noticeable in the end, at least not in online mp games because you have to wait for others to load in anyway.

No problem! And as a hackintosh, that is essentially the case, but you'd run into driver issues if your laptop's hardware doesn't have Mac drivers. For instance, any AMD components you might have in the laptop simply cannot be run on macOS as there are no drivers for them on Mac. That said...you may not have to change to a new OS. Have you tried to perform a new clean install of Windows 10? A lot of times the issues of the OS slowing down on Windows 10 are due to updates slowing it down by creating needless bloat and a reformatting would help with that, or just a clean install of the OS. I'd try that first before anything else, and to do so, you can use the media creation tool found at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10. Alternatively, do you know if the laptop has a slot for an m.2 SSD? You might be able to try adding one of those in there and see what happens, and if that doesn't help or simply isin't an option forr you to do so, you might try replacing your storage drive you have now (I'm not sure if it's a hard drive but considering it's a former Win 8 machine I'm assuming its a mechanical drive) with an SSD and/or upgrading your RAM. The differences are that one is NVMe and the other one is SATA (One is very fast e.g. 1600mb/s, while the SATA one is max 500mb/s).

You can only put 1 of those inside the E490.

The other bay you have, is a SATA type slot.

Man, I'm not sure a full-blown SSD drive would be as effective as it would be in a desktop/laptop but to each their own.

You would go with a Hard drive since there is already an SSD installed.. This would be a great selection and is even recommended by Amazon for that specific laptop.

I actually JUST replaced my hdd with a 2TB FireCuda 2 days ago, so I can verify u/tracetrinity's advice.

If I upgrade the 1tb in my PS Pro it'll be with an internal Seagate Firecuda. This option isn't getting mentioned and it can shave a significant amount of time off your boot up. One demo on YouTube shows it shaving 14 seconds off startup (38 seconds down to 24).

Keep in mind that hybrids aren't full solid state drives. They monitor what tasks are being repeatedly read from the hard drive and store those items in the limited solid state memory. So boot gets a big boost but a game won't see gains until it's loaded up several times.

If I was buying now I guess I'd do the 2tb seagate barricuda everyone is getting. I installed the one I updated in my og 2 months previously. Which is a 2tb seagate slim external i popped out the shell...I imported 400gb over of my saves to it and have about 750gb left. I do a lot of digital for psvr and sales...fills up fast! But 2tb is pretty decent as there old games I will delete I have on disc and probably won't play much or doesn't have a huge patch.

Only difference over stock on either og or pro I noticed was the times it got powered off unexpected, while not in rest mode.

Having a surge in rest mode haven't had a issue with any drive. But non stock drives I have had them reinstalled OS from ground up after a surge with the OS on completely. Where as the stock I never had an issue if this happened. It may be do to the cache and way the upgraded drives function with extra features and catalogs/caches vs the standard stock drive. It's not really an issue, but I usually keep a current back up every month or so of my entire system with games and patches just in case! Save files are cloud so no biggie...but reinstalling discs with 10gb patches and big digital in a day sucks.

For the cheap I'd say 2tb seagate slim external as they are on sale for 79.99 and have proven to work great for storage and just a hair better than the stock but not much

I am very happy with this drive so far. Plenty of space, games load quicker, I can switch them quicker, and it has just been a really positive experience overall. Sorry about your luck on your initial try at an upgrade, but once you have a larger drive in there you will be glad with the effort.

That's strike 1 against a SSD.

And even if the SSD is exponentially faster than a SSHD, you're not going to notice much difference with the PS4 Pro. I can already get Diablo 3 up, running, and into a rift in a matter of seconds. Shaving a second off that isn't worth the cost to storage ratio.

Plus, personally, I'm playing one game over and over until I'm done with it. I'm not going from Diablo 3 to Destiny to Call of Duty in one day. I'm picking one, I'm sticking to it, and the cached times work perfectly fine for that.

So if someone doesn't mind spending more than the console itself then sure, go with an SSD. Or if you have one laying around the house. But if a person is purchasing one, new, for the PS4 Pro and want a lot of storage and faster load times? SSHD makes way more sense.

I looked into this recently and every article I found said speed gains from an SSD were minor and not worth the storage difference versus an SSHD and I can see why. You only need to cache the game you're currently playing and you don't want to have to keep reinstalling games because you've run out of space. This is your best bet for a new internal drive.

These are 7mm thick, will work fine with PS4 Pro's 9.5mm thickness clearance.

First off, I doubt your hard drive is "500mb". Not even linux could run on that. I also wouldn't suggest going for some random 3tb, as that is a terrible way to buy things. That's like going to the store and buying a random tv. You just don't do that.

I would suggest looking into a Seagate FireCuda 2tb. This is a great drive, although I prefer Western Digital, I have heard some things picking back up for Seagate. Even if Seagate is bad, doesn't really matter on a PS4. Send the hard drive back if it fails, all your loosing is your screenshots or something. Nothing important like family photos or your entire research project.

If you want to research and find another drive, you can search up 2.5"/laptop hard drive. 3tb are very rare for a 2.5" drive. I would also recommend 7200RPM. Also I would highly recommend 2tb, as 3tb is huge as hell, and I have over a hundred games installed on my 2tb PS4, and still have 750gb free.
