Coca-Cola was created in 1885 as a patent medicine composed of extracts of Coca leaf and Kola nut. It is unknown exactly how much was used in the original recipe. Cocaine was already becoming a sensitive subject by the turn of the century, and so its use in the soda was phased out very quickly. By 1902 it was as little as 1/400 of a grain of cocaine per ounce of syrup.
