I don't know if they are real, but they are certainly very misused. My country is full of "saints" who cure people's troubles by ridding them off of jinns who are haunting their houses or possessing them. This is usually accomplished with a broom, incense or holy water.

But yeah, I had a phase as a kid where I was really into Jinns and I looked up books describing them in an Islamic context. Here's some of what I learnt:

  1. They are made of fire.
  2. They have a very advanced civilisation.
  3. It is forbidden to ask Jinns, or people being possessed by them about their world.
  4. They seduce beautiful humans of opposite genders.
  5. The devil was actually a Jinn.
  6. They haunt houses that have been left uninhabited for a long time.
  7. Dogs might be capable of seeing them.
  8. They like to occupy places partially shaded from sunlight.

    I'll try to look up the book I read, but it was ages ago, and some of this is folklore.

  9. They routinely try to sneak into heaven, but are rebuffed by angels who throw projectiles at them. These projectiles are what we call shooting stars.
    Don't ask me how that works, but iirc this is a hadith.
