I mixed up your response above and for some reason I though you preferred the "busy" watch. Sorry, here's a better reply for simpler styled watches:

Tissot again makes some simpler watches. The Le Locle (linked) is one of their trademark pieces that is a bit above your price range but is certainly timeless. It is more expensive because it is automatic and not battery powered, but they make similar quartz movement watches.

Seiko's simpler watches are nothing special, but their dive watches are very popular among watch collectors, especially the "Sumo" and "Marine Master" models which are more expensive than your budget allows. These are definitely "casual" watches which could be worn every day, whereas the Tissot might trend on too formal.

The Bulova Precisionist series is probably too busy if you preferred the simple model I originally linked; I've been waiting forever for them to make a conservative, simple Precisionist to add to my collection to no avail. The original one I linked is probably the simplest one they make.

Another option, stepping outside the three brands I originally picked, would be to go with a Hamilton. This is a historic American brand, now owned by the same company as Tissot. Their quartz movement watches start at just under $300. Many of these are military styled but they make some slightly dressier, very simple ones as well.

I'll leave you with one last option which is often overlooked, and that is a Chinese brand called Orient. They are very affordable, much under your budget, and while they are not built as well as fine Swiss watches they are certainly good watches from a dedicated watch maker. They tend to be popular as an affordable mechanical watch brand, and I have no personal experience with their quartz watches, but they have a fairly dedicated fan base so they are probably worth checking out.

As a watch nerd I would rank the Hamilton watches as head and shoulders above the others, but in your price range your options are more limited stylistically.

Finally my time to shine.

If you are looking for a good-for-everything watch, you have a few options. If you are looking for an automaitc watch (no battery, purely mechanical) you really can't beat the SKX007. It has excellent durability, classic looks, and the lume (glow stuff on the dial) is excellent. There is no battery to die, although you may need to get it services in a decade (or get a new one). Leave it on the bracelet for a sporty everyday look that can go with a suit, to a wedding, or a funeral. Throw it on a NATO strap (how I wear my watch every day) for comfortable everyday wearing. Get different coloured straps for different things, and change it up. A new strap can make it look like a totally different watch.

If you want something that will do almost any occasion without a mechanical movement, basically any Citizen Eco-drive will do the job. I myself like the Citizen Nighthawk, although it might be because I'm a pilot. The slide rule on the outside is great for addition/division (how much to tip, how much tax, etc.) and it will tell a second time zone.

If you are looking to make a statement, there is nothing that tops the Seiko "Orange Monster". This thing is built like a tank, the utomatic movement is proven, and the lume is out of this world. It also comes as the "Black Monster" if you want to be a bit more subtle.

If you are looking for a dress watch, I would recommend the Orient "Union" as it has a durable, in-house movement and great looks.

If you are looking for something badass that will be great for nighttime, there is the Traser Code Blue. It is a very durable quartz watch designed for military operations. It has vials of tritium (hydrogen with two neutrons) and will glow without any exposure to light for at least a decade.

If you are looking for a digital watch, I would recommend either the Casio Mudman if you are looking for a large, indestructable watch (That is also allowed for space travel by NASA) or the Casio F91W which is much slimmer, but less durable.

Possibly one of the best deals in "stylish" watches is the Timex Weekender. The come in a million different colours, have an electric illumination, and are very stylish and durable.

My advice would be to get the SKX007 on the bracelet, and then grab a few NATO straps. I have had great customer service interactions with Clockwork Synergy. Their straps are of decent quality, and their service is second-to-none. If you have a little cash left over, grab the F91W for chores are hiking, or anywhere you may need a stopwatch and illuminated face (i.e. Flying).

In this price range, it's probably going to be a dive watch and most likely a Seiko or Orient. Here are a few:

u/CruiseBiscuits · 13 pointsr/PKA

MVMT watches are well known for being low quality "fashion" watches. These fashion brands are usually aimed at a younger audience so it makes sense they advertise on podcasts. In my eyes they aren't even worth the ~$100 price point. Sure they'll last a while, but so has my 10 year old Timex I got for 20 bucks, or some dollar store one I got as a kid.

If you are actually looking for a quality ~$100 watch, look at Seiko, Citizen or Orient. /r/watches is a very good place to learn, and you might find, like countless other beginners, that the Seiko SNK-809 is for you (my first "good" watch was the SNK-807), which is $50-$70 and a real mechanical automatic ("perpetual" for those of you across the pond) movement. Anything from Seiko 5 range is an incredible starter automatic watch.

Do some research if an automatic movement vs quartz movement is right for you (quartz is the basic battery operated watch that the "guts" can be found in watches ranging from $500 Movados to dollar store watches). I REALLY like seeing how things work so I really appreciate the mechanics behind an automatic watch. The downside to them is that they aren't as accurate as quartz (a normal range of inaccuracy is like +-10 seconds a day). But you'll never have to change a battery if that is any consolation. If that puts you off, keep in mind that a $10,000 Rolex has an automatic movement good for +- 5 seconds per day. And as a final PSA, stay away from Invicta. Their automatic movements, cheap pricing, and flashy looks may look enticing, but quality control is horrendous. Just as with any potential purchase, do some research on a watch you think looks promising. Give the model name a search on google or /r/watches and try to find a consensus.

For those of you who have been thinking they want a watch but haven't started exploring styles (which is the demographic companies like MVMT pander to with their styles) here is the classic "diver" style watch with the Rolex Submariner. A cheaper automatic dive watch I've been wanting for a LONG time is the Seiko SKX007, which obviously pays homage to the Sub, but is about $5800 cheaper. I'd replace the bracelet with something better than what is there though. Maybe I'll get it after college...

Another well loved cheap diver is from Orient, the Mako, though I prefer its big brother, the Ray, even though that is even closer looking to the Submariner.

The absolute best in budget vs quality in a dive watch is the ~$40 Casio MDV-106. You can get a decent 22 mm steel bracelet for almost the price of the watch and it will look fantastic if that is your preference. I've borrowed my brother's a few times and the thing feels like quality and has been put to the test plenty of times to prove itself as a real dive watch. He goes swimming, hiking, plays sports with it, drops it on concrete, etc. Rugged yet elegant looking. Good size too. Highly recommended first diver or first watch!

If you are looking for a real dress watch with "minimalist design" that doesn't look tacky like MVMT's (sorry, just my opinion), there are plenty in the Seiko 5 line like I said, or the lovely Orient Bambino.

Came back to say that if you don't really know if you want a watch, don't think you need to spend $100 on your first. Who knows, you might not like how it feels or looks on you or whatever. For the absolute cheapest of cheap, get yourself a Timex or Casio quartz watch. These brands are well renowned for their reliability. This way you'll end up spending only $15-20 on a watch that will last and work forever (obviously with battery changes along the way).

They are not a very good brand. They focus on advertising over quality. If you want something with a similar look I would consider this.

This. I have one and absolutely love it. Not only is it aesthetically nice, but it's an absolute tank and is one of (if not the) only ISO certified diver in this price range.

u/ArghZombies · 6 pointsr/Watches

For any normal watch I'd say that one has a better movement than the other, hence the difference in price. There is more to a watch than just being 'an automatic'; there are vastly different specifications between one automatic movement and another.

However with Invicta they tend to either use a Seiko movement (if you're lucky) or some random Chinese one that you'll be hard pressed to find any detail about. They're not very well liked watches, and are spectacularly overpriced considering what you can get for the same money.

You'll get better value for money, and something reliable if you went for something like this actual Seiko diver which has lots of respect and fans. Also, have a look at watches by Orient which is also a well respected and affordable brand. Which Invicta sadly isn't.

u/spmtr · 4 pointsr/Watches

You're very unlikely to find a mechanical chrono for anywhere near $400, but you can get a very solid diver for significantly less. The Ray would be a solid choice, or a Seiko SKX007 or SKX173.

u/blackice7 · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

That's actually a good budget to get a decent entry-level watch.

If you're into a sporty, yet classy look, I would check out dive watches. They're versatile, indestructible, and will look good with most outfits.

I was in the same situation as you, and was deciding between the Orient Mako http://amzn.to/rivjad or the classic Seiko SKX007 http://amzn.to/qbWT5Z. I ended up with the SKX007 because it was unique, and a long time favorite within the watch community.

You can get either one of those <$150 on eBay from trusted sellers. Can't get much more bang for your buck.

I just received this in the mail yesterday. I think I got an ok deal. Was hoping to add a cheaper watch to my collection for work days etc. I unfortunately think this is too big for my little wrist.

Currently on Amazon for $291, https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SKX007K2-Divers-Automatic-Watch/dp/B000B5OD4I/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=seiko+skx007&qid=1572039223&sr=8-1

I was hoping to pass the deal to the community and can ship this to someone for $245. If no one wants it, I can still return it as I did not remove the tags.

Thank you!

u/UpYourButtJobu · 3 pointsr/Watches

Sure. The Seiko SNK80x series is quite a popular inexpensive automatic. It's a little on the small side at 37mm, but it's a nice clean design with a decent Japanese-designed but Malaysian-made movement (hence the cost savings). Some say it's a little loud and not too accurate (+/-15 to +/-20 seconds per day is not unusual). But for the price, it's hard to argue that it's not a good value.

Going up in price but at or near $200 is the Seiko 007 series. This is a good value 42mm diver. You can get the rubber strap model to bring it under $200.

u/peskysens · 2 pointsr/Watches

Would you say it is worth the price difference to go for the SKX007K2? I hear a lot of good about this watch. I am just confused as to what is the best every day one that can take the every day wear and tear.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Watches

Great reasoning -- just pulled the trigger on an SKX007K2... will probably pick up some NATOs for it.

If anyone else is interested, they are currently USD $150.40 + $13.52 shipping if you buy from a seller called MOON-DOG.

Yeah for sure -- I bought it here on Amazon for $180 with free two-day shipping. There are some 3rd-party sellers on Amazon with a lower listing price but fairly expensive shipping, so this ended up being the best deal.

u/reb_mccuster · 2 pointsr/nba

same, I decided I want to start dressing more like an adult and I figured this will go a long way. it's a pretty nice looking watch IMO, Seiko SKX007, not too expensive as far as diver watches go and from what I'm told it's a pretty iconic design that gets lots of recognition.

u/dandandandan · 2 pointsr/Watches

Seiko Skx007 for $200

u/strattonoakmont11 · 2 pointsr/Watches

I'm the proud owner of both an SKX007 and a 009, and I wholeheartedly recommend them.

I also own an Orient Blue Ray, which is a very nice watch. I think I prefer the SKXs to them though, I think they have an overall cleaner look and the bezel action is a lot smoother. I don't think you can go wrong at all really though with any of these.

Another one you could consider:

Citizen Promaster

u/ubercl0ud · 2 pointsr/Watches

I would stick with Orient or Seiko. You can buy the orient's right on their site, but if you do sign up for an account first and wait a few days until you get an email with a discount code. The codes typically range from 30-45% off what they show on their site. I have seen that the amazon prices stay about 10% within what the discounted prices are but at times they can be lower.

u/T3hSav · 2 pointsr/Watches

Looks fine to me, but if you want a slightly more minimal look check out the SKX007

u/midwatchcowboy · 2 pointsr/Watches

In that budget, the Orient is the best of them.
However, try these:

u/JoeChmoe · 2 pointsr/Watches

You can get a great SKX007 for under $200. Why pay more?

u/Phototropically · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'll be honest, the dial face is at least inoffensive, but that case is going to be a pain in the ass more often then not. If you're right handed and wearing on the left, it'll dig into your wrist. In all likelihood, you will have difficulty wearing that with any longsleeve shirt because the sleeve will bunch up behind the watch due to the height. On top of that, that much steel is going to be heavy. I can appreciate that you like its design, but it won't be a very functional watch.

I don't know what colour watch you're after, but I can tell you want the big, rugged watch look. If you have $200 burning a hole in your pocket, check out the Seiko Monster, or a Seiko Diver, or a solar Powered Seiko Diver Chrono? These are all rugged watches as well, you could wear them with everything from swim trunks to a suit (okay a suit might be pushing it), and you could still wear them in 5 years when fashion watches have moved onto the next trend.

The bottom line is if you want a nice rugged watch that you can abuse, there are other better watches that you'll still want to have in 3 years when it comes time to have the battery changed. Seiko will make a better watch than Oakley, and hands down are better value even with a 60% discount on Oakley.

edit: I don't mean to be rude or anything, but I have worn a clunky fashion watch for a spell because I really liked how it looked, but functionally was a bad watch for those reasons I listed above. Learn from my mistakes.

u/acog · 2 pointsr/WatchShopping

I know the Monster is considered a modern classic, but if you want something that is a little more conservatively styled and a little cheaper, consider a Seiko SKX007. Taste is subjective of course, but I prefer this to the Monster.

u/AcidWorld · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Concerning the watch, Seiko have a vast collection of very faired price products. Maybe a white dial chronograph or a [diver] (http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SKX007K2-Divers-Automatic-Watch/dp/B000B5OD4I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1397987212&sr=8-3&keywords=seiko+diver) ?

For the messenger bag, Etsy has plenty of products. This bag looks like what you're looking for, but there's plenty of other choices.

u/jericho · 2 pointsr/Watches

Here's some quick tips towards getting a watch any of us would respect; Get an automatic (mechanical, self winding). Buy it from someone who makes watches, not jeans and stuff. Big watches are what a the kids are wearing now days, but don't be silly about it, the lugs shouldn't hang off the wrist.

Seiko, Citizen, and Orient are some names to check out at about $200 or less. With a $500 budget you might look at Steinhart or Christopher Ward, say.

Or, get this.

Seiko SKX007K with Stainless steel band, Do you think this is a good watch for a forst time user? And the price is fair enough?

u/throwaraelien · 2 pointsr/Watches

If I was 17? I'd get a cheap reliable automatic diver on a bracelet. They have a nice look that will match basically anything you wear and you don't have to worry about getting them wet. Maybe an Orient Mako, Ray, or Seiko SKX007/09 or Stargate (would have to shop around to get it at your price range, but I've seen an SRP491 go for $210.)

Links:

Orient Mako Cheaper at Long Island Watch though, even after the usual orient coupon codes.

Orient Ray Also cheaper at Long Island

SKX007 and SKX009 are out of stock at all my usual haunts. I used amazon links but I don't know anything about the sellers - shop around and buy the seller, then the watch..

This looks great on a NATO, and on the bracelet. Also Auto and Durable.

You can get a Hamilton Khaki in Quartz for that price range as well... not sure how good that would be for being in water daily though.

u/myrmagic · 1 pointr/Watches

This is a husband birthday watch. Seiko Alpinist and it goes under a suite

But if it's out of your price range then the Seiko SKX007 is a 10/10 watch choice and is super popular in this sub. Very cool, useful tool watch that is super comfortable to wear.

Also this Seiko 5 might be a bit more dressy in that price range

A nice leather strap can be purchased as well and it's very easy to change or take to any watchmaker or even some mall kiosks and ask them to change it.

u/bigbadboots · 1 pointr/Watches

I think there were at least 2 different listings of the SKX007K2 and the one I purchased had only 2 or 3 pictures, but if you go with World Order as your seller you should be good to go.

what about this one from amazon? im still in my youth and have older parents who are really sketchy about ordering/entering credit card numbers to anything other than amazon.

u/005 · 1 pointr/Watches

Would you consider the SKX007 or Black Monster (and here's Gen 2)? These are somewhat obvious suggestions, but the quality of the cases on these two are so much better than the Seiko 5s. The Gen 2 is especially interesting because it uses a 4R36 movement, which has a hacking seconds hand. That said, the SKX007 is prettier IMO.

u/snubdeity · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

As other shave said, you won't get what most would call an "heirloom" timepiece for $300, you'd need at least $3000 for that...

But all your other requirements can be fulfilled. I'd recommend the Seiko SKX007, but if you aren't interested in a diver, there are other good options out there.

u/user_name_fail · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

An automatic watch. If you're looking for budget friendly look at Seiko. Their automatics will last 20+ years And as for maintenance for the most part all you have to do is wear it and adjust the time every once in a while.

My suggestion would be the SKX007K2 Diver. It's under $200 and comes on a stainless bracelet so it looks good as a daily and at more dressed up occasions.

u/NotProperAttire · 1 pointr/Watches

Is that any different than this one? Amazon deals rarely change much.
FYI: In general, the percent a watch claims to be discounted tends to be a blatant lie.

u/pelvicmomentum · 1 pointr/Watches

Watches like Seiko's SKX007, SKX013 or SNZH57 are much better quality watches, and would be great for you because they have a very healthy modding community. You can buy all of the bezel inserts you want to use with a SXK007/SNZH57/SKX013 and swap them yourself. You can even change everything to make it look just like a blancpain fifty fathoms.

u/elBenhamin · 1 pointr/Watchexchange

I bought this watch pre-owned in identical condition as it is today. I was blown away by the construction of this watch, but found that this it was too small for my tastes. It was worn seldom by the original owner and for a few hours on my wrist in my apartment. It comes with all original packaging and a Strapcode Endmill bracelet. This is my first transaction on r/watchexchange, so I will be happy to provide references from my eBay profile.

Case/crystal condition: 10/10
Endmill bracelet condition: 9.5/10 (very few hairline scratches)
OEM bracelet condition: 10/10
Specs are here: https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SKX007K2-Divers-Automatic-Watch/dp/B000B5OD4I/

I also have a Helgray Silverstone for sale for $180 here. I would prefer a cash sale because I am saving for a Pelagos. However I may be open to trades for a Black Sumo, Borealis Sea Hawk, or a similarly sized/styled automatic diver.

u/jason_lawrence · 1 pointr/Watches

I'm considering getting my first automatic watch. My main criteria were <43mm diameter, <13mm case height (thinner the better) and a budget <$400, with sapphire crystal as a bonus. After tons of reading through the sub, my final choice is narrowed down to the following:

i. Seiko SKX007 - I'm afraid this will sit too tall (13.25mm case height) and no sapphire

ii. Orient Mako USA II -

iii. Orient Kamasu -

iv. Seiko 5 SRPB79 - Unsure of the quality of this Seiko 5 as it does not seem popular

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

A Seiko diver watch with a metal bracelet is a tough and versatile watch. A canvas, leather, or nylon strap will get dirty if he's working outside; the metal is easier to clean sawdust and chainsaw bar oil off of. And rubber watch bands are OK but are more casual.

A classic: SKX007K2

A solar quartz diver chrono: SSC015

Or a field watch with metal bracelet: SNZG13

I don't pay much attention to women's watches, but I would look at Seiko solar watches and Citizen.

Thanks, the watch is a Seiko SKX007.

Your options are pretty limited on Amazon, but there are some good watches. I'd stick with Seiko, Citizen, or Tissot. These are a few that appeal to my tastes. If these aren't quite up your alley, I'm sure you can find some from those brands that do. My picks:

Seiko Automatic Diver

Seiko Black Chronograph

Tissot Chronograph

a seiko diver could be a pretty snazzy piece within your budget. not huge (on my wrist at least), but i think they are pretty sexy.

That's very nice of you to get him something! The site you linked to is showing the price for me as $295.01 CAD (that works out to $225.14 USD). For that money, I would personally rather get one of these:

Not while drunk but get yourself a nice watch. Seiko, Citizen, or Orient, like this:
