I wouldn't risk it. If it is genuine (i.e. not just a frankenwatch made of spare parts) then it;s going to be a bit old and tired anyway. And 34mm is a bit small by todays standards.

For just a few dollars more you can get a brand new Seiko 5 that meets your criteria of black dial, lune and line hour markers. That's where I'd spend my money.

Or just have a look at any number of black dial, line marker seiko 5's. Take your pick.

The SARB033 is very much worth the price IMO. It has a sapphire crystal and uses Seiko's 6R15 movement, based on the venerable 7S26, but has hand-winding and hacking. Fit and finish should also be superior to Seiko 5s, but YMMV depending on the Seiko 5 model.

If saving for another month is out of the question or you just absolutely must have a watch within your target budget right now, there are a few Seiko 5 alternatives. Note that the 5s all have day/date complications as opposed to the date only on the SARB033.

There's the SNK795, which shares the same design as the SNK793 you posted, just in black with a red seconds hand. It's about $100-110 depending on seller.

This SNK605 comes a bit closer in terms of the design of the hands, but is still a far cry from the SARB033. The dial is textured instead of flat black and Amazon seems to have some discrepancy over whether the dial is dark brown or black. Jomashop's picture shows a black textured dial and the price is much lower than on Amazon so I would go with them if you pick this model.

My last suggestion before I have to run is the SNKK71. It has a refined look reminiscent of the SARB033 while keeping it's own identity. Again, priced lower on Jomashop than Amazon, but not by much.

The Orient Bambino is another watch to consider. ~$130-200 depending on who you get it from. The ER24004B version is the one with the tapered hands, but may be slightly more difficult to find now.

For reference, here's Watch Sleuth's Seiko 5 Finder. It's pretty nice for comparing the different Seiko 5 models and maybe you'll find something you like. FWIW, I would personally save up for the SARB033 instead of settling or a Seiko 5 if that's what you really have your eyes set on style-wise. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with any Seiko 5 IMO.

I had a similar desire to yours and after much waffling decided on a black seiko 5 like this one. My main worry was that a black face wouldn't look great on a brown strap, but it actually looks really nice. It also looks less "overdressed" on a NATO strap with sneakers than a white face would, and it's easier to see silver hands on a black face than on white. I think it is formal enough for events like job interviews and weddings. Having a clean face design (with preferably ticks rather than numbers) lends more to formality than the color choice. Most people don't even wear watches these days, so wearing any tasteful watch is nice.

I also want to add that I hate the metal bracelet watches come with. In my opinion, every outfit and occasion is better served by some other option.

Only drawback is it's tiny and he's a rather big guy. But you're right about Seiko perhaps being the way to go. Costs a bit more but I can be pretty sure it's authentic.

After scouring the buying guides (thank you for those!), I've decided that I want to purchase a Seiko watch for my SO, but I'm stuck between these three options. I want to get whichever of these options is the best value. The first one is a solar watch, but one of the reviews as well as the lack of description made me wary that it might not be legitimate. The second is a Seiko 5 watch, but the Amazon description has different measurements than I've found for the same watch elsewhere, which again makes me wary. Do you guys have any advice for me on which of these three watches to purchase?

It depends what you mean by "good." They're generally looked down upon by watch enthusiasts, as many of their diver models are poor homages of the Rolex Submariner. Also, they go pretty far out of their way to hide the fact that their watches are made in China. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but China Made watches are generally of the lowest quality compared to Japanese, German, and obviously Swiss. I'm not sure whether you're looking for an automatic or quartz watch, and that will make a lot of the difference.

As far as quartz watches go, you shouldn't really be paying too much for one as it is. The quartz timekeeping mechanism usually doesn't cost more than $20. Really, all you're paying for is the case and the build quality.

Most watch enthusiasts prefer automatic watches. Invicta uses a range of movements in their automatic watches, including decent ones from Miyota (a Japanese company owned by Citizen) and some poorer ones from Chinese manufacturers. Depending on which movement you get, YMMV will vary as far as accuracy. Generally, I've heard they're not too bad.

Invicta has some fans, and may even produce some decent watches. However, that isn't to say that they're good. Personally, based on the fact that they're made in China and generally have lower build quality, I would stay away from them. That, and the fact that very few of their designs are original (or attractive, to me at least).

For people seeking an automatic: I would recommend that rather than buying a $65 Invicta, save up a little bit more and get something of better quality that will last longer. The Seiko 5 is available in a number of styles (that's just one example) for a very reasonable price (some are even less than Invictas). It's of higher quality and will likely keep better time and last longer. Another company to check out is Orient - their movements are typically either Japanese from companies like Miyota, or designed in-house, which is impressive.

If you're looking for a quartz watch, rather than an Invicta, I might suggest a Citizen Eco-Drive. You can pick those up for under 150, and it'll be of better materials and quality. Also, it's solar powered, so it'll keep excellent time and not require battery changes.

At the end of the day, the vast majority of people won't notice that you're wearing a watch, let alone what kind of watch you're wearing. You should choose one you like and wear it for yourself, not based on anyone else's opinions.

Movado won't receive much praise here and getting someone to recommend one will be like pulling teeth. I can't remember the exact thread but to paraphrase another redditor, a Movado is the right watch for you if you have $500 to spend and want everyone to know you spent $500. As concept3 stated, you will likely not find a Movado with the second hand movement you're seeking. Hopefully you only want simplistic and are not stuck on the brand. The movement is like he said, not constant but micro-ticks which give the appearance of sweeping.

Other than a Movado I doubt you'll find anything with nothing on the face, though that simplistic look they go for is not actually easier for telling the time...another reason people bash them. More like an expensive bracelet that happens to have a battery.
