I do not remember that talk, however Giantbomb's go to headphones for there podcasts are Sennheiser HD 202 which are only $25 the only issue with them it that the audio cord is over 10 feet long.

The headphones that are used in the control room are the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro at $99 which are great headphones for the price.

And if you can find a pair the Sennheiser HD 419 which I use are awesome I have a large head and I can wear this for hours on end without issue. They go for about $30 - $40 if you can find them.

From what I understand, these are some generic China made headphones and are often rebranded by different distributors.

I've seen these same headphones under the brand of Sades.

You're getting what you pay for. $25, less than sub-par quality, V-shaped headphones. Mic is definitely not the best out there.

I've seen these headphones for the same price before as well, I believe this "deal" is just the way Amazon sellers will list something at 10x the value and then drop the price to retail and claim you're saving.

In terms of quality of these headphones, I'd say skip it.

TL;DR: You'll get a better deal buying the Kingston HyperX Core for $55.



If money is insanely tight, and you just need some headphones, you can pick up the Superlux HD 681s for $35-40 on amazon/ebay. The only gripes with this headphone is the earpads and the enhanced highs (causes sibilance). But if you're willing to do away with comfort and want good sound for the money, these are still an option.

If money is really tight, get a Takstar 2050, or Superlux 668B/681 Evo (681 improved, also known as MK II) from a Chinese retailer/taobao/ebay. The 681 EVOs come with Velour pads.
Price is too high in Canada for these ($70 versus ~$40 if bought from china), but YMMV. Worth the wait though.

For a mic, get the Audio Technica clip-on mic from NCIX or wherever.

• If you can spend a little more on a mic, get a mod mic. Benefit is you can always upgrade your headphones and migrate the mic.
  
  
• If you can spend a little more on headphones, get the Senheisser 419s, 439s, 518s, whatever you can find on sale. Essentially, more comfort and better build quality.
  
  
• Another viable option, and if you want two birds with one stone, get the Kingston HyperX Core for $55, Hyperx Clouds for $75, Cloud 2s, Pros for $78, etc. They're known for their comfort; decent pair of headphones. Benefit is you won't have to wait for shipping as long as ordering from China.

  I only recommend such, as written above, because you will appreciate the sound quality and difference these can bring to the table. You might be spending a little more, twice/thrice more even, but you're looking at an exponential difference. If you're in no rush, wait for them to go on sale and capitalize on the moment.
  
  In terms of closed/semi-open/open, that's subjective. But its well known that open headphones provide the wider soundstage, which, for instance, will help with locating sounds, like footsteps. But again, to each his own.
  
  Note: I don't recommend the Monoprice 8323s because of their discomfort and build quality. Unless you're willing to spend extra on pads, and have a very tiny head, these headphones will most definitely give you comfort issues. It's certainly not for those who wear glasses.

Absolutely, though it depends on your price-range. The greatest deals come when you wait for sales, though i'd imagine you'd like to get to listening your music. For brands, I stand by Sennheiser and Audio-Technica (Sennheiser being my favorite), though people all have their own opinions about who is the absolute best. Here is a very thorough guide that should be able to help you more than I can. I will give 1 recommendation if you are looking for something that is reasonably-priced (and has actually gone down since it's been around for a little-while), these Sennheiser HD 419's. Totally reasonable price, the headphones are really soft and comfortable and the audio-quality is really nice. The only problem I have with them is that the cord isn't beefy and could possibly get ripped-out if you are careless with them. Other than that, they really are excellent (especially for the price).

I don't buy knock off stuff, not for some great moral reason, but because I find that its a losing proposition.

Cheap goods do not last as long (generally) or perform as well as high quality goods.

The perfect example of this is that a $100 pair of boots may last you a year if you wear them every day, but a $400 pair of Danners will last you over 6 years of daily use and can be resoled to extend their life, which cheap boots cannot. At the end of 6 years, a person in $100 boots will have spend $600 on boots and never worn a quality boot (which performs better in addition to lasting longer) and the person who bought the $400 pair of Danners will have spend $200 less and had a superior boot the entire time.

Another example is those $50 "beats" you mentioned.

A $50 pair of Audio Technica or Sennheiser headphones will easily outperform that knock off $50 pair of beats, and they will come with a warranty that is actually honored, and they will last longer. The only thing they lack is that wearing a pair of Beats headphones makes you look like a flaming idiot and says to the world "I care more about fashion than how my music sounds".

For example, this chart shows that Beats do have more bass than a free pair of Apple iphone earbuds, but actually perform worse in the midrange and the same in the rest of the frequency spectrum...not exactly what you would expect for a $150-$200 pair of headphones:

Unfortunately not that pair, but I have a pair of these that I like to use as an extra reference headphone. They're not terrible but I wouldn't use them for every day use. Surprisingly sturdy though.

Another option would be the Sennheiser HD 419's. I don't have these either but I hear nothing but good things about Sennheiser.

40 year old me, got half a buzz on, laid in bed, and jammed out to a high quality version of the Barton Hall show through headphones that cost as much as my first car last night. I'd imagine 17 year old me would be pleased.

If you're doing non-shooter-gaming stuff and want good sound, get the best stereo headphones you can find. Sony and Sennheiser make great audio equipment.

And then get a stand-alone mic and a stand of some kind.

I can't really recommend any 5.1 surround headphones at the moment since they don't seem to exist any more. Everything I could find was 5.1 headset with mic and marketed toward gamers at an insane markup. Get a 5.1 speaker system instead. If that's not possible, this headset by ROCCAT is the only thing I could find for <$100 that still had true 5.1 surround.

If you want to reduce hissing noise, get an external DAC... usually run $100+ though and are probably overkill for most people.

Location - UK

Budget - ~£60, flexible on price. Lower is also perfectly fine.

Source - Will be using them for Console gaming mostly but with a chunk of films and music also. So a bit of everything but mostly gaming.

Requirements for Isolation - Will be using them at home so no preference here, open or closed is fine.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over Ear / Circumaural. I have a large head and fairly large ears and will be wearing them for fairly long periods of time for gaming so large cans would also be preferable.

Preferred tonal balance - Not too sure, whatever is best for the things which I will be doing. Maybe a bit more on the Bass side.

Past headphones - I am new to the world of decent headphones so my past consists of the bog standard apple and in ear Samsung earphones etc.

Preferred Music - Fairly general taste in music, little bit of everything but probably favour R&b/Rap and dance/ electro a bit more.

Notes - I have spent the past week looking into getting a pair of headphones but I am still fairly lost as to what to get with such a huge variety. The AD700s and Senn 558s and other models above those are widely recommended but they seem to cost almost twice as much in the UK as they do in the US and so they are out of my price range which is disappointing.
Audio Technica M50s and Senn HD 518s can be had for around £80 but they are really pushing it price wise for me unless they are definitely worth it. Found some cheaper Senns like the 419s or the 429s but what is their quality like? Sony MDR-V6s are also another pair i have seen recommended.

Obviously for gaming I would pair these with a clip on mic of some description. something like the Zalman clip on or similar and a 2 to 1 splitter to plug into the DS4 controller. However 5.1 and 7.1 headsets are pure gimmicks, stereo is great. Here, Here and Here are examples of what can be done through stereo in regards to positional sound.

Look for the original ATH-M50 for around $80 USD refurbished, or a new M40x. The newer models are awesome but rise above your budget by a bit, with not too huge of a performance difference. The Sennheiser HD419's are a great deal right now, and are nice, sexy, and comfy, albeit with a fragile headband. 439's and 449's are also good budget options, especially on sale like they are now. Sony's MDR-7506 is a phenomenal industry-standard pair but might be a little more clinical than she'd like, as they have a mid-range boost for monitoring pro audio. MDR-V6 is a tad warmer and more musical, but just as detailed. Also good to note that the sony's are pretty much indestructible, and fold and bend nicely while the sennheisers can't bend much at all.

They look pretty good, I rather like them.

Though my understanding is that pricier is usually better, and Sennheiser's a popular brand here, so...how are these?

Not Earbuds But I strongly recommended this pair. You're going to have a hard time getting a good sounding pair of buds that feel good and dont break the bank.

I did a review on the ModMic 4.0 the other day. It's $42 + shipping ($49 if you want a mute button). For heapdhones I recommend the ATH-M30x ($53) or the Sennheiser HD 419 ($50). Both of them should put you right about the $100. The Sennheiser 429S ($39) is also in that range but I'm not sure what the difference between that one and the 419 is other than the mic.

If you want to get technical, a pair with good soundstage and imaging is what you need. The ones I got are decent, I'm sure there's better ones but these are way better than your typical 10 dollar pair. The main issue I have with this set is the cable is razor thin, which can lead to some durability issues.

• 2.0 channel having just one speaker in each ear means you will get higher quality speakers with better sound and durability. Surround sound headphones are mostly a gimmick, a similar effect can be accomplished with software such as Razer surround
  
  
• Clip on mic when manufacturers add a mic to headphones they charge more than buying them separate would cost. Additionally if the mic breaks it is attached to your heaphones. Getting a clip on mic means you can put more of your budget towards the headphones themselves and if the mic ever breaks it can be cheaply replaced.
  
  I would go with the sennheiser HD 419 for £37.90 and the Clip On Mini Mic £1.45. For a grand total of £39.45. I have a similare pair of sennheiser headphones that have lasted me 5 years so far.

Did you really just say the solo is a good on ear, and that you can't compare two different types of headphones on the topic of headphones?

I trust my listening experience to electrical engineers and companies devoted to hiring those people and making excellent audio products on that expertise. Dre has my full respect as a music artist and producer, but from what I've heard old and new from his beats company, even after apple bought it (like that would do anything anyway...) it is muddy, mid-bass humped junk for the trunk.
