What I usually recommend when someone ask for advice about gaming headsets is: Gaming headset are crap 99% of the time. They provide very poor sound quality, and any good headphone (literally, even 40$ ones) will sound far better than expensive 300$ headsets. The question is not if headphones are better than headset (the answer is “Hell, YEAH”). The question is, are they better for you?

What are you planning to use your headphones for? Just for gaming, or for gaming and music listening?

If the answer is “just for gaming”, then ask yourself if a Hifi headphone is what you need. Usually games don’t really need high quality headphones, since they provide low quality sound, and you will be more concentrated gaming than listening. In that scenario, everything will serve you, and gaming headsets have the advantage of the integrated microphone.

So, if you want something good for gaming, and just for gaming, with integrated microphone, then the only two headsets with good enough quality sound (aka don’t suck) are:

HyperX Cloud (70$)

Sennheiser G4me One (170$)

Both are good choices. Or go with any fancy RGB headset you find (Logitech, Razer, Corsair, Steelseries, etc), you will most probably don’t notice the difference while gaming.

BUT, if you plan to use them for music listening besides gaming, then keep reading.

Hifi headphones for gaming have the disadvantage of having to deal with the micro thing. None of them have microphone incorporated, and you must either use a desk microphone like this, use a modmic like this one. or if your budget is tight, something like this. The first one requires desk space. The second and third one are detachable micro, with an extra cable you’ll have to deal with. Any of them are a nuisance. Any solution is annoying. All of them are an extra expense that must be accounted. If micro is a must and you are not willing to bother with this solutions, please, go back to HyperX Cloud or G4me One.

Ok, so, you really want some damn good headphones, that also can be used for gaming! Keep reading, please (are you bored yet?).

You can choose Closed back headphones (the classic ones you have already used. Closed back models offer good isolation and do not leak sound. This is your choice when there are people around you, or you want isolation from noisy a environment.) or Open Back headphones (Open back models offer next to no isolation and will leak sound -and allow you to hear what happens around you-, but they are the best sounding models). Open headphones achieve the best sound, soundstage (feeling that sound is coming from around you) and imaging (ability to locate the origin of one sound).

If you are here because you want to get a replacement for a gaming headset, I would recommend you Open back, but since they don’t isolate, you must choose. If isolation is required, get closed back, if that’s not a concern, go open.

Some closed back cans:

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x. 100$. Balanced headphones, very good feedback from lots of people. Typical entry level headphones to the rabbit hole.

Sennheiser HD 598Cs. 125$. Balanced, very very detailed, great instrumental separation. Comfortable as hell, Very recommended.

Beyerdynamic DT770. 160$. V-shaped signature (lots of bass and lots of treble). Great for explosions, movies, and rock. Treble can be harsh if you are sensible. Get the 32 ohm version, as the 80 (may) and 250 (do) need an amplifier to work properly.

Those are some examples of entry-mid level of closed cans. There are lots more, depending of your budget!

As for open cans:

Superlux HD668b. 40$. Those are THE CANS. The best quality for low budget you can get. Hands down. Great soundstage, Bass light. They are not too comfortable, but pads can be changed for a deluxe comfort (extra expense). You are not getting anything better at this price. For gaming in a budget, this are the headphones you were looking for,

Philips SHP9500. 80$. Mid-forward signature. Good soundstage, great comfort. Very detailed. Another amazing quality for the budget headphone.

Sennheiser HD 598 SR. 170$. Very similar to the HD 598Cs, but with open back. Wider soundstage, a little less bass. Very balanced headphones. Super-duper comfortable. Great for long gaming sessions.

Philips Fidelio X2. 250$. V-shaped signature. Those are in another league. Build quality is just.. OMG. Extreme soundstage and imaging. More comfortable than the HD 598. Bass is BOOOOOM!!!. A little pricey, and can be somewhat fatiguing to listen if you are treble sensible, due to high treble.

Well, that’s all. I have selected only headphones that don’t need an amplifier. Now is your turn to research, watch some Youtube videos, read some reviews, and give them a try.

All this headphones are GOOD. No trash here, and all them will make you open your eyes when listening your music if you are coming from standard headsets. You will notice sounds, instruments, that you never realized they were there, even if you had listened this song a thousand times before. Try them, and be amazed.

Welcome to the rabbit hole.

I agree with the other comments here, don't worry about spending more to get more. If you haven't heard decent headphones (designed for the sound quality not the looks or marketing) then something cheaper will still be impressive.

Here are some recommendations to get you started:

Open Back

u/Seri0usbusiness · 9 pointsr/edmproduction

The ATH-M50's are NOT flat at all. I've had the ATM-H50 for almost 3 years and every time I take off headphones off and listen to my HS7's, the highs pierce my ears.

I recently got the Sennheiser 598Cs on Black Friday and they're definitely a "truer" response than the ATH-M50's.

According to camelcamelcamel, that's the price that black friday had and pretty much hasn't been since.

u/iHubble · 8 pointsr/headphones

So is the deal on HD 598 Cs still a thing after the UK drop?

EDIT: Holy shit, yes. Even better, they are $109 CAD with free shipping on Amazon.ca, which is ~$80 USD after conversion! This is amazing.

u/TheBlankVerseKit · 7 pointsr/headphones

For UK customers, £89, down from £199.

Just bought mine. First decent set of headphones. Very excited.

Amazon Warehouse & most of em have little dings here and there.

There's one thats just re-packaged on page 4 and some more for $5 more on page 7.

$115 new, $80 used through Amazon Warehouse. Don't get the standard 598 if you plan on using these outside of home. These are the Closed version that doesn't leak sound out.

u/Grayko · 6 pointsr/PS5

I’ve been using the Sennheiser HD 598 CS through the headphone jack on the DS4 for a long time. Extremely comfortable, well built, and incredible audio quality. I’ve had them for 2.5 years now and they are just barely started to show wear on the ear cups. Incredible value as well.

Was a years long headset user from Sony, Tritton, and Astro dating back to my early teen years. Ditching headsets was the best choice I ever made audio wise. The in-line mic isn’t as good as a boom arm but it’s worked well for me when I rarely need to use it. I’d recommend waiting to the 598s or something similar, or even the HyperX you mentioned. Never had good personally experiences with consumer grade Sony audio products, specifically their old PS3 headsets.

EDIT: Sweet sale now gone so they're no longer super-bargain.

u/theDarkUnknown · 5 pointsr/classicalmusic

I think the issue with just recommending a single model is music listening like preference is rather personal and varies among people. Headphones have different profiles, some place emphasis on bass or highs, others are completely neutral (some people find neutral sounds off for instance due to years listening to a certain profile). You may want to have a look at r/headphones, there's handy guides in the sidebar including an interactive questionnaire that can help select suggestions.

I personally use this DAC and an
HD 598 CS. The DAC isn't strictly needed to be clear, I mainly use it to switch between set of speakers and headphones easily.

If by earphone you mean in ear buds then I can't really say I have a good suggestion, I just use a standard bluetooth pair of anker which are acceptable. I don't like having expensive earbuds, drives up cost if/when they get lost.

u/youngkidae · 4 pointsr/headphones

Then I think you should go with something closed back, less noise from the outside and also less sound leaking from you.

Audio Technica ATH M40X Might be good for you.

I used to have an open back version of this wich was pretty ok too, but nowdays I use a beyerdynamic custom one.

u/necrofin · 4 pointsr/headphones

There is the HD598CS: https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Cs-Headphone/dp/B01JP436TS I've no idea how they sound in comparison with the open back though.

Sennheiser's a great brand, and I personally have a pair of Sennheiser HD 201s, HD 419s, CX3.00s (for my phone/mobile devices), and more recently, a pair of HD 598 SRs — the latter of which I was able to snag on Prime Day for $110 CDN :P

u/farix126 · 3 pointsr/headphones

Hello all, so I got some help last night and think I’ve narrowed my options down to either a DT 770 , a 598 CS or just keeping what I have (hyperx cloud). I was just looking to see if anyone could help me decide or make other suggestions.

This is my post from last night with all the details. A summary is I’m looking for some new headphones for 150$-200$. I mostly play video games and listen to music for background. In all honesty I’m not sure what I’m really after, other than to see what everyone here is talking about. My only “actual” reason would be that my current pair is almost 5 years old. I would also need to get a mic if I get a new pair so any suggestions for that would be appreciated.

Thank you for any advice and sorry if I said anything dumb, I am extremely new to this.

u/Kerry56 · 3 pointsr/headphones

HD598cs might work for you. Its the closed back version.

u/JamesDaBatman · 3 pointsr/headphones

Looking for a new pair of headphones since my current ones just broke on me. I mainly play CS:GO, so I need reliable headphones that will let me hear what direction things come from. I've been looking at the Sennheiser HD 598 Cs but I'm not sure if they have surround sound like I'm looking for.
Budget - I'd prefer not to spend more than $130.
Source - Desktop PC
Requirements for Isolation - Since I live with my family, I'd like to have a good amount of noise isolation.
Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No.
Preferred Type of Headphone - Full sized
Past headphones - Logitech G430, which just broke on me

It has been at $200 for all of November until now. It has only been for sale since beginning of October so there's not a lot of history. You can use website camelcamelcamel.com to check price history of amazon products. Here's the link for this product.

I assume it's a similar product to other 598 models like these:

http://camelcamelcamel.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/product/B0126HISOO

But that may be a bad assumption on my part. Hope I helped.

u/sfw_account_no_boobs · 2 pointsr/headphones

You have some options here, all up to you. You can use camel^3 to track the prices and alert you when they go below a certain amount. The C's just went on sale on BF (I got mine then) so it may be a bit before another deal, but apparently right now they are $114 on amazon! The SE's are still around $150, but like I said, I would get those. The C's are great, but they really do close off sound around you and it can be jarring sometimes. I've also heard the SE's are more comfortable to wear.

Wow, thank you for such a comprehensive response! I will give all of these a listen. And I totally second your statement on film/tv soundtracks carrying intense emotional weight, just listen to the soundtrack of Schindler's List (my favorite work of John Williams). I actually just ordered a pair of top-drawer headphones today, and I'm looking forward to experiencing music in a whole new way. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JP436TS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 here's the link if you're in the market for a new set of cans! I wish you well in the forthcoming holiday season.

I'm going to also echo the Sennhaiser HD 598C suggestion. I use them with my P-255 and they sound fantastic.

u/Smooth_Trumpeteer · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Any good headphone deals I wont need a mic and being portable would be nice?

Edit: Incase anyone is looking for something similar to what I was, I ended up getting these guys currently $100.

u/ntzm · 2 pointsr/unitedkingdom

Picked up these, been looking for some noise cancelling headphones recently.

u/Unacceptable_Lemons · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

If you get the 598 C's from Amazon Warehouse "Like New" for $77, they come with a mic built in the cable. Also, the cable they come with is actually usable by normal people, compared to the 558's which terminates in a giant plug that you have to adapt down to 3.5mm, and risk it breaking a port with how it sticks out.

Be aware though that to use the mic you must be plugging into a 4-pole audio port, rather than a standard 3-pole port. 4-pole is usually found on laptops, phones, tablets, iMacs, and that sort of thing. PC MOBO's separate the 4-pole into a normal 3-pole headphone, and another 3.5mm port for a mic.

If you need a seperate mic, or just want better quality, I'd recommend a ModMic 4 on sale around $45. Personally I think their omni-directional mics sound better as well than their uni-directional ones. Here's a decent deal on ebay, especially if you can wait for an ebay 20% off code.

u/ThisIsDK · 2 pointsr/Vive

I see. Is the Vive hard to use with over ear headphones? I have these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JP436TS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/materix01 · 2 pointsr/headphones

The HD598C doesn't leak much sound outside but it'll let in a bit more sound from the environment that something like the ATH M40x which also happen to be a bit more portable as well.

The 598C should be very close to $100(their normal price. Can currently be found new for under $110 sold directly by Amazon or a lot cheaper if you're willing to be patient or try used.

u/theograd · 2 pointsr/audio

With this information, this is what I'm thinking:

  • Audio-Technica AT2035
  • Mackie 802VLZ4, 8-channel Ultra Compact Mixer with High Quality Onyx Preamps
  • Sennheiser HD 598 Cs Closed Back Headphone

Now, with those, how would I get my audio from PC 1 and PC 2 to come through the headphones?

Currently, to hear PC 1 from PC 2, I have to just open Elgato Sound Capture software on PC # 2 which is kinda meh. When recording, I don't mind having to open programs, but just having to open stuff just to hear? Ugh. Big hassle.

Also, I have my consoles (PS4 Pro, Xbox, Switch) and PC #1 all going into an HDMI Splitter, where the output then goes into the Elgato Capture Card inside of PC # 2 (I can switch what I'm outputting to the Capture Card). How do I capture the audio from this? Or will the Elgato still handle that, instead of the mixer?
u/Snackskazam · 2 pointsr/u_drop_official

You might want to look into the Sennheiser HD598CS. I use them as my daily drivers/going out in public cans, and I absolutely love them. I think the sound quality is some of the best I've heard in closed-back headphones, but I have not had the chance to try those 820's someone else linked. They're also slightly lower in price point than the 6XX. Though, as the OP pointed out, it's a fundamentally different listening experience.

u/FeveredBerry · 2 pointsr/xboxone

Elite pro: $199.99

Versus my recommendation:

Sennheiser HD 598C (Amazon will have them on sale for 99.99 for Black Friday, according to various sources) $99.99

ModMic $54.99

Any Y adapter will work, like this $7

Grand total: $164

Now you have something that sounds better than any gaming headset.

Now, if you are dead set on getting a gaming headset, I'd heavily recommend HyperX over anything else.

u/ChiefGrieff · 2 pointsr/HeadphoneAdvice

Headphones on Drop are a good place to start like the HD58Xand 6XX. Both are considered great first-time hi-fi headphones for a very reasonable price considering the performance matchs headphones double the price. What you need to ask yourself is what you want. More bass (More fun)? More accuracy (as intended)? I own the HD58X, an open back pair of headphones that offer an accurate sound signature but have a bit more bass than their older brother the 6XX who has a bit less bass but is more accurate in sound reproduction. Watch some youtube videos on different headphones, figure out if you prefer open or closed back. Theres a lot to go over before we can figure out what you'd like.

I started with the HD598cs Closed back headphones and upgraded to open back HD58X for at-home listening with FLAC files, I mention this in-case you haven't become wise to flac file, which tl;dr are just high-quality music files that sound better given you have the right equipment, say a new pair of mid-fi - hifi headphones like yourself potentially. The 598 are fairly accurate and have admirable bass. I've owned them for 2+ years and they have been my daily commute/travel headphones and they have worked brilliantly. I Stayed with Sennheiser products mainly because they are consistently ranked among the best headphone companies and are just beautiful to look at as well listen too.

Side note, some headphones need extra equipment to run them like an amp. Some headphones need more power, like the 6XX, and so it needs an amp to run properly and to let them shine. Headphones like the 58X Don't need an amp and can run right off a phone, but even with the use of an amp can help the sound quality.

That is on ear. You can always get something like the HD202 for $39. I would still recommend adding the extra and go for the 598Cs which often goes on special for $99 and thus second hand for $80.

Alright so I was going to buy a pair of the Sennheiser HD 598s, but I'm a bit skeptical because they are open backed. I listen to a fair amount of loud/explicit music like Nine Inch Nails, and don't really want others hearing Trent say "I want to fuck you like an animal" while I'm listening to The Downward Spiral.

That being said, there is a closed back version of this pair, but they are significantly cheaper ($170 vs $124). Why is this? Are they worse quality? I assumed the closed pair would sound just as good, just more isolated and less like the sound was coming from around you.

Here are the prices and products in question:

Is it just a really good deal? I was planning on getting a pretty nice pair for around $150-$175, and the open pair seemed to be that, but I don't really want others hearing my music.

u/Isaac3104 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

My biggest recommendation is getting a pair of dedicated headphones and a mod mic. Mod-mic sells both unidirectional and omnidirectional microphones, whichever suits your preference. You can get both for about $150-175. Headphone wise I love my Sennheiser 598s and if open back headphones aren't your thing then they have a closed back model too. Switching speakers is pretty simple as well, just go to playback devices and set the speakers as the default device. Here are some links to the items I mentioned:

You really don't need a gaming headset.
I use these: Sennheiser HD 598 Cs Closed Back... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01JP436TS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
They sound great and are more subtle than gaming headsets. The built-in mic works well too.

u/Stylomax · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Personally I'm a fan of using a quality headset and attaching a ModMic to it. So bearing that in mind I would suggest one of the following:

  • Sennheiser HD 598c One very nice closed back headset

  • Audio Technica ATH-AD700X One of my favorite headsets, even better if you can get the original non X version as I consider the drivers to be even better. These are a nice set of open circumaural headphones

  • Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro Another good closed set of headphones, be aware these are higher impedance headphones so you may want to look for the lower impedance 32ohm version if you're not sure if your sound card can drive them properly
u/LambentStone · 2 pointsr/pcgaming

Sennheiser HD598CS and a cheapish boom mic. I typically avoid any 'gamer' stuff unless its the functionality of the mouse or keyboard in question.

*not exactly a fan of closed back headphones, prefer open back.

u/tiggyspawn · 2 pointsr/headphones

yeah, any open-backed headphones DO leak sound. It's like having little speakers next to your ears, so anyone sitting next to you would be able to to hear the music clearly. The upside is that most open-backed headphones are larger and thus more comfortable to wear for longer periods of time, and can sound better, too.

If you want portable closed-backed headphones, then I can vouch for the M50s, I like mine. They'll definitely give you a big difference from what you're currently using.

There are also larger closed back headphones, which do not fold and are not portable. These are WAY more comfortable though, so they'd be a better choice if you don't need your headphones to be as small as the M50s are.

I've heard that these sennheiser ones are nice, for example.

EDIT:
I personally found the M50s to be pretty comfortable, even though I wear glasses and have a large head, so you've got nothing to worry about comfort-wise. If I were you, though, I'd try them on somewhere before purchasing them.

u/codmanhowie · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you are looking for a headset type mic, the ModMic5 is a great option. You can cut a few bucks with the 4. As NekoLas90 said, Sennheiser is great also. Hope this helps! Good luck.

u/ziptofaf · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Looks decent but go to /r/headphones for recommendation on sound related stuff - with $135 budget you can get something from an actual audio company rather than a mass produced crap for "gamers" (aka has to have good basses and rest can be crap). I mean, $80 already buys you THESE:

https://www.amazon.com/AKG-240-Stereo-Studio-Headphones/dp/B0016MNBAM?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-ffab-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0016MNBAM

And I guarantee, no Logitech headphones (or gamer model in general) comes close to it. You do need an external mic in that case (Zalman ZM-Mic1 is clipped to a headphones cable for example). Just gotta specify your needs in this direction - like naming your 5 favourite songs and what do you want the most from sound in a subreddit I linked so someone can give you decent recommendations. But the very fact that you are buying something in the same range as Sennheiser HD598 means you can get something much better than your current choice.

These cost around 160€ on italian amazon and they are already discounted. But oh boy do they look beautiful.
I've found a HD 598C version that is closer to 100 bucks, would that still be worth it?

u/tripped144 · 2 pointsr/PSVR

Plus 1 for the se215's.

Or if you really want over the ear, save up and get the Sennheiser HD 598 Cs that comes with a mic on the cord.

Tbh OP, none of the headphones you've listed are "audiophile" quality. Gaming headsets are notoriously overpriced for the sound you get.

And if you just absolutely can't spend more than $60, I would get the Xiaomi Hybrids. They are extremely good for the price, isolate well, and have a mic.

Good luck!

u/OverExclamated · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I understand that you didn't find the m50x comfortable. It's not an uncommon opinion and I agree. So here are some popular, more comfortable, options that can still provide a good soundstage and sound signature for gaming.

Ah well they retail for like $15 so I can't imagine they'd be incredible :P. I don't know the sound signature difference between the 1900 and 9500 but I'd imagine the SHP9500 would have a similar signature but would just sound massively better overall.

You are right, though, open back aren't great for public use. I replied to a few comments and must have mixed up who wanted which with isolation. Unfortunately I don't know a whole lot of closed headphones for ~$100. There's the Sennheiser HD 598CS but I know that's a bit out of your price range. Other than that I'm honestly not sure, sorry I couldn't be of more help. Hopefully someone else shows up and offers more recommendations.

I've tried several software solutions for this such as Voicemeeter Banana. The trouble is that no matter how fast your computer is, you're going to have a few ms of delay because of Windows and all that jazz. The result is that your voice will sorta be echoing by a few ms in your ears. It's okay for getting a volume level but long term doesn't work because when you hear yourself on an echo like that, it gets a little confusing at least for me anyway.

The zero delay solution for me at least was to just buy a microphone that has a monitor 3.5mm audio jack built into it. I use a Shure PG42 USB microphone that has a built in monitor jack for headphones. And Shure's audio driver in Windows allows me to also route the game audio through Voicemeeter Banana to my capture software as well as to the Shure 3.5mm headphone port. The headphone jack shows up in Playback Devices as Shure Speakers. The result of this setup is I get game audio as well as my realtime voice through my headphones. The microphone also has some of its own volume adjustments so I can level out the game audio and my voice in my ears (so I can actually hear myself clearly over the game). Recently upgraded to Sennheiser 598 Cs headphones and this setup works awesome.

Unfortunately the Shure PG42 USB was discontinued awhile back. You may be able to find a decent priced used one on eBay and there are some new ones still being sold on Amazon UK. There are some other USB microphones that have similar 3.5mm jack configurations for voice monitor, but you'll want to check if their drivers allow you to route game audio to the headphone jack under Playback Devices as well. Not sure if that's something standard across the board now or not.

In this setup you can also use VM Banana to route your team's chat line to your headset as well and your capture software. I have Skype routed to my headset as well as to my separate commentary track in OBS.

Yup, most cans with great soundstage (great for gaming) will be open back. It was these ones that dropped to about $100 CAD last year during BF. I used them myself for a little while before getting K7XX's and can definitely say they are incredible for their price point, in both personal use or as a gift.

There's a closed back variant here but I can't attest to them personally since they're quite new and imagine the quality, at least in soundstage, won't be as good.

Hi, I'd like some opinions for choosing between 2 options of headphones. I'm looking to upgrade from my old Sony MDRZX110 since these have worn down within the past year.

Sennheiser HD 429 S

Sennheiser HD 598 C

I have zero experience for high quality headphones, so anything better than my old Sony's will do. Mainly considering price, comfort (can be worn for 6 hours continuously), and durability.

The HD598 are more than double the price, and based on the ratings it seems to be better. Should I invest in the more expensive headphones and expect higher quality sounds, comfort and durability? Or should I stick with the cheaper HD429?

Hello! I was looking at getting the Sennheiser 598 Cs headphones for gaming/listening to music. Amazon posted that this was a cyber monday deal and I thought that at 100$ off, these would be a great value. i read that while the soundstage was a little more narrow than the open back version, I do want closed back over ear headphones because I want to be able to use them in public spaces without atrocious headphone bleed. Here is a link to the headphones.

Is this a good option, or are there better headphones at this price point with the same build quality?

Thanks!

(BTW I listen to rock, metal, electronic, hip-hop/rap. I like solid bass response, but my old Razer headphones had overpowering bass that made it not very good to listen to. My current pair of nice headphones are Jaybird Bluebuds X).

Indeed they aren't compatible :-P - I'm going to test them out for a bit and then either return the V-MODA and get this guy or just get an adapter. - It's good to hear you think they'll fit well on a small dome. :-)

Hm, in case they for some reason don't fit though, do you have any other headphone suggestions for the same price range or is this? EDIT: How about these? Appears to be a good sale atm. I'd return the V-Moda for the mic I linked above.

Budget - ~300, Flexible

Source - Galaxy S6, Desktop PC, or Mpow Bluetooth v4.1 Receiver

Requirements for Isolation - More Isolation. I plan to use these in my office and in public

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear/ full sized

Preferred tonal balance - I prefer a more natural balance, maybe some emphasized bass and mids, but nothing crazy. Just some cans that are a pure joy to listen to.

Past headphones - Sennheiser earbuds (old, and not sure which model), Sony Gold Playstation headset

Preferred Music - A pretty wide range, mostly acoustic and alternative (Lewis Watson, Cody Fry, John Mayer). Classic rock (Queen) and more modern rock (Thirty Seconds to Mars, Pierce the Veil). Piano centered classical (Ludovico Einaudi). A bit of EDM/ Pop/ House music (DJ Snake, Kygo, Lauv). Some hip-hop/ rap (Run the Jewels)

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - For my next set I'm really looking for a pair of closed backs that are a joy to listen to for hours, with the best sound stage and positioning (I'd like to use these for gaming as well). I know that's difficult for closed backs obviously, but I have come up with some potential choices:

If you're okay with a wired pair instead of wireless, the HD598CS (closed version of the HD598) sounds perfect for you.

If you want public, the NVX XPT100 is great. Not the most portable, but noise isolation is good while still having good soundstage for a set of closed cans. Also the most comfortable set you'll wear that doesn't cost $250+, especially if you use their angled ear pads that are included. The price is normally $80, so ignore the $100 listed and wait a bit for the decent priced sellers to get more in stock.

Unfortunately I cannot give you any insight on the sound of closed back AKGs, I've only heard the wildly different open back variety. Beyerdynamic is also a good option for closed back with a lot of room in the cups, FWIW I hate the DT770, but they're wildly popular and many people like them. If you have a guitar center around you could try them out (and probably some AKGs too)

Consider something like this as well. Sennheisers are very comfortable, and have decent space.

HD 598 'Cs' closed backs, on sale for $100 today, Black Friday. Yea or nay?

I never sprung for the standard 598 as I wanted something closed for work.

u/Snufalufugus · 1 pointr/headphones

If you don't want audio leakage, get closed headphones, like the 598 Cs

u/AnimusNoctis · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

A headset will never sound nearly as good as a good pair of headphones and an attachable mic for the same or less money. Get a Zalman Zm-Mic1 or a Antlion Audio ModMic and attach it to a decent pair of headphones from Sennheiser, Audio Technica, etc. The HD 598 Cs fits your price range if you go with the Zalman.

Edit: If the mic is your only concern, just take it off and buy the Zalman or the ModMic and attach it to your Revolver S.

u/Couch_Lion · 1 pointr/PUBATTLEGROUNDS

Yeah I actually searched those and they look great, but was wanting to spend closer to $100 set that will last and good value. I must admit I did get suckered into buying some Logitech headsets myself when I started getting into gaming more. Namely the G930 wireless set and the G430s. Both are great and comfortable, but I never thought sound would be so important until I started playing PubG.

I've got my eyes on The Sennheiser 598 I was reading some reviews on this brand and model and saw a lot of great feedback so the extra $$ I think would be worth it if I'm really going to get into good quality headphones.

Was also looking at the Sennheiser 558s as they're the cheaper version, but still good. So I'm not sure going for the 598s are that much more worth it, idk I'm kind of lost haha

u/Quagga_1 · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

Going by your criteria, I'd pick the...

Sennheiser HD 598 Cs (CND$145)

  • Closed-back design
  • Provides some isolation
  • Neutral sound
  • Oval ear pads
  • Detachable cable (3.5mm)
u/justjanne · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

That's interesting, I had only checked German Amazon (although they now put it on sale, too): https://www.amazon.de/Sennheiser-HD-598-Cs-Headphone/dp/B01JP436TS/

u/Ravenblood21 · 1 pointr/u_QuipA

I have a few updates to suggest for the Closed-Back headphones guide:

  1. The Urbanite XL are listed as 125$ headphones, however they go for 70$ on Amazon.

  2. The Creative Aurvana Live! are listed as 75$ and with a slightly wrong name(L!ve), they go for 57$ on Amazon.

  3. The Sennheiser HD598Cs are listed as 125$ headphones but currently go for 170$ on Amazon which is the only store I've found them on.

  4. The Audio Technica ATH M50X are listed at 130$ and currently go for 150$ on every store I found them (Amazon and BHPhotoVideo for example).
u/WilliamDecker · 1 pointr/PS4

Yeah, and they also came out with the 598 CS, which is just a cheap version of the 598's.

I got my ivory 598's for $114 CDN back on November 28, 2014...which is a big reason I'm not too worried about the colour, just slightly annoyed.

u/Abdul-Rahollotasuga · 1 pointr/headphones

I'd like to recommend these.

While these are more bassy than another popular choice at this price point, the HD598 cs, it should be suited for listening to hip hop. But if you want a more neutral experience, I hear the HD598 cs is a better choice. From my personal experience, you can always make the HD598 cs a bit more bassy with some equalizer changes, so it might be the safe bet for your genres.

u/OrbitronFactory · 1 pointr/headphones

Check out the HD598 Cs, they’re closed back so would be good for office use and look much more sterile. Main drawback is they’re not very portable (don’t fold up) and are a bit flimsier. But they’re cheaper and sound is fantastic.

They’re actually much cheaper on the Canadian amazon store right now:

When it comes to headphones I am using some Sennheiser HD 598 Cs Closed Backs they aren't audiophile material or so i'm told, but I still think they are amazing headphones. (Keep in mind I use a blue snowball as a mic to talk when gaming)

If you are looking for a headset I personally love the HyperX Cloud II's I had the first edition of them and they were great! I heard they improved a lot about them with the second generation of them.

When it comes to fans I used to use the Corsair SP120's currently I am using the fans that were stock on my H440, but the corsair fans are quality static pressure fans that are pretty quiet. Plus they have mod rings to fit your build aesthetic.

u/shardis · 1 pointr/headphones

A little digging - and these may be within my budget, but I'm a little confused. Would you be able to enlighten me as to the differences between the different variants of the HD 598 here?

  • HD 598 - Standard listing, nice but at a hefty £182, which paired with a mic pushes me up towards the £200 mark - a little steep, but then...

  • HD 598 C - Enter the "C" variant, with closed backs. RRP equivalent to the standard 598's, but currently on sale for a much nicer £140. Would I be correct in assuming that the closed backs will negatively affect the sound quality & soundstaging to an extent here? Some reviews suggest that may make things more "artificial" sounding; though in reality, I doubt I would notice much difference as a casual user (and regardless, compared to the gaming headsets I'm used to, I'm sure there will be a big increase). Likely better isolation from outside noise, however. But then there's also...

  • HD 598 SR - What seem to be standard 598's (apparently in the special-edition black, no less) with a one-button remote and in-line mic for phone calls... again at a lower price. I think I must be missing something here.

Do you have any experience or advice here on which may be the most suitable?
u/NekoLas90 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Well they don't make the ones I have anymore so I dunno lol the 598 closed back look like they might be the most comfortable, but I imagine they're all really comfortable.

u/mypanda · 1 pointr/headphones

My apartment has a ton of street noise, and I'm looking for something over-ear to wear in addition to foam earplugs to block out even more noise while I'm sleeping. I think I want noise isolating rather than noise cancelling.

I was considering just buying protective earmuffs, but it would be nice to be able to listen to music occasionally. I'm wondering whether something like Sennheiser 280 Pro or Sennheiser 598 would effectively block sound even when no music is playing?

Or does anyone have any better suggestions? I'd be willing to pay ~$125 (though cheaper would be nice). The sound isolation is way more important than audio quality for me.

u/AMReese · 1 pointr/headphones

I am torn between two choices. I kind of want to replace my headphones both on the go (bus to and from work) and at work itself (desktop, barely any interaction).

A reminder I am not an audiophile, but I still want great quality and comfort. Since I listen to a lot of podcasts and some music, I wanted great mids to hear the vocals and a closed-back design so I can hear what's being said without having to share that with anyone nearby. I'd also like to not have to deal with heat issues, but I understand if that's unavoidable with that style of headphones.

At the moment, I'm using a pair of Panasonic RP-HJE120-PPKs on the bus and on the go and a pair of Monoprice Headphones.

Here are the two headphones I'm split between:

HD 598 Cs - I wanted good, comfortable closed-back headphones that are worth every penny and are a popular choice. I figured I'd go with the most recent iteration of these since both the Purchase Assistant and the recommendations section say that they are a popular choice.

LucidSound LS30s - My brother says they are the greatest, most comfortable headphones he has ever worn. I trust his opinion, but that doesn't necessarily mean he knows the most about headphones. Since they are also apparently good as gaming headsets, I could use them whenever I do decide to go down that route, but I could just as easily wait and get an external microphone.

If anyone could help me make the choice, or have a better option for me that doesn't include these two but fits my needs, I'd really appreciate it. Since I know quality headphones are an investment, I'm willing to spend between $75-200 on a pair, unless someone convinces me enough to spend more or less.

u/mmosarecool · 1 pointr/buildapc

HD598's are about as good as it'll get without a DAC/amp being semi-important.

Creative Aurvana Live 2's are a great set of cans for the price. Imo, they're honestly the best it gets until you drop $150+. They honestly shit on just about anything you throw at them in their price point too, imo.

HD6XX's (HD650 reskin) are from massdrop, the sale opens fairly often, and are essentially $350 headphones for $200. They reaaaally benefit from a DAC/amp though. Even a small two-in-one.

Another honorable mention are the AT-MX50's. They're just the ole reliable recommendation to me. They've aged alright and go on sale fairly often.

There's a lot of stuff to look at when you buy headphones, and honestly, it's just a 'you get what you pay for' type thing up until a certain point.

For pure listening experiences, I don't enjoyed closed-back (noise cancelling) AT ALL, unless in mobile use. Open backs are a lot more immersive to me. Another thing is that "digital surround" and surround emulation are kinda fake and physically impossible. You have 2 speakers on your head. Not 7 and a sub. Digital surround is a pretty bad meme and something you shouldn't fall for.

Hello again!
The final candidates i got from all the suggestions are:

HD569-link which are 110eu

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 32 Ohm - link which are 117eu

Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7GM - link which are 169eu

Sennheiser HD598CS - link which are 229eu

The starting budget was 100eu, but im willing to go to 200, or even 229 if some of you experts think its worth the additional money.

There is also an option of waiting for black friday and seeing how the sales go, but i would like to be prepared in any case.

Do you maybe have any more suggestions on those headphones?

Wow. Where is that offer? I'd get a person who is more knowledgeable about this but, that looks really, really good. I'd shoot after getting a better opinion

Just by the way, I wouldn't use the headset that comes with it. With all that money saved snag a sennheiser HD 598 - https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Cs-Headphone/dp/B01JP436TS/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
and a modmic if you need a microphone - https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-Modular-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B01MCYRKY3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486872593&sr=8-1&keywords=modmic+5

What's your budget? A common affordable mic is a Blue Yeti, or Blue Snowball. A favorite among the gaming community is the Sennheiser HD 598, or HD 598 SE.. they are the same, but the SE are black. Then if you want those headphones but with closed backs they are now around $50 less then the open backs.. HD 598 C's. It is preferred with those headphones, to buy a headphone amp or USB DAC to go with it.. If those don't work within your budget, let me know and we can find something else! There are many options. My personal setup is Sennheiser PC-350 headset with the Mic removed, and an AKG P220 condenser mic mounted onto a Rode PSA1 desktop boom arm connected to a Behringer Q802USB Mixer.

Hi, I currently own the Hyper X Cloud II but have started to hear something vibrating/shaking inside the headset. Consequently, I'm in the market for some new headphones. After following the buyers guide I'm currently interested in the Sennheiser HD 598 Over-Ear Headphones, Audio-Technica ATH-M50X Studio Monitor Professional Headphones or the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro Headphones - 250 Ohm. Nevertheless, what's the difference in sound quality between those headphones and these headsets: Sennheiser GSP 350 Closed Back Gaming Headset, Sennheiser PC 360 Special Edition Gaming Headset, HyperX Cloud Revolver Pro Gaming Stereo Headset.

Budget: No more than £150
Source: Directly into my computer
Isolation: some (block out computer fans)
The headphones will be used exclusively at my desk.
Most of the music I hear will be from games, which varies heavily, so I want something which is okay for everything.
Overall I'm looking for something which is clear/detailed (so I can hear opponents in multiplayer games) while simultaneously sounding good for music/cinematic/single-player.

Thanking you.

EDIT: What's the difference between these: Sennheiser HD 598 Cs Closed Back and Sennheiser HD 558 High End Open Over-Ear

I'd like to point out that Sennheiser made a closed back edition of the HD 598. So if you really like the sound signature of the 598s maybe you should check them out.

u/Icemasta · 1 pointr/headphones

I think I prefer open back, mostly because last time I used closed back, I couldn't even hear myself talking with my microphone and it was thoroughly confusing, but they might have been noise cancelling. The closed back are also on sales.

Then again, how noisy will open back be to my surrounding? How much goes through from the outside?

I know 'Beats by DR Dre' headphones generally aren't liked by the headphone community, but from reviews I've read that they do have great bass, and good heavy bass is one of my favourite parts of listening to music, I want to really feel it. My budget is in or around the £150 mark, give or take.

The two headphones I had in mind were either the Beats by Bre Pro or the Sennheiser HD 598 c. Reading around people generally seem to prefer the Sennheisers, but I was wondering if, specifically considering the bas, the beats came out on top? Any info on either is appreciated!

These are on sale atm, been using them for about a year now and absolutely love them, No built in mic so you'll likely have to pick up a cheap clip on, I'm not entirely sure how they stack up directional sound wise also so may want to look into that more (If you do want to wait and miss the deal these models go on sale fairly often)

I have a couple of suggestions for you based on the Sennheiser line with different categories for you to pick from.

First off, if you would want a gaming headset with a great sound capability and a powerful boom mic, I would recommend the PC 373D, Sennheiser's latest product in their gaming line. Albeit much more expensive than other gaming headset in the market, that is to be noted.

Secondly, if you would want an audiophile grade headset yet not overly over the top expensive, go with the HD 598 CS. This is the closed back version of the original 598 with improve head paddings and overall build quality, great for long gaming sessions.

Lastly, if you prefer the full Sennheiser experience, the HD 600/650 is your pick. Although still in the $300-$400 price range it is worth it if you don't want to pay $500+ for better ones yet still get the similar good sound quality.

(compared to the 40x, these swivel and a bit better sound AFAIK)

Sennheiser HD598 ($150):

Preferred Type of Headphone: Over-ear

Preferred tonal balance: Wanting a fairly balanced sound, a little bit of a V signature

Past headphones: Nothing of any note, everything sounded 'good enough'

Preferred Music: Mostly electronic with some pop mostly. I'd also be using these for gaming but don't want the sound signatures or gimmicks associated with gaming headsets

What would you like to improve: Clearer, more detailed sound and generally a more balanced signature

Location: GB

I've already done some of my own research and have found several pairs that seem to offer what I am looking for: Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7BK, Sennheiser HD 598CS (cursing myself for missing these when the were £90) and the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 (the iOS variant as they're within budget, don't know how well they'll play with my Android phone however). Having trouble deciding between these, though I am open to any other suggestions of course. I did consider the Audio Technica M50X's as I've heard many good things about them but wanted a (and I know this is subjective) good looking pair of headphones.

Thanks! :)

As others have said, in headphones its all marketing jazz or faked. Unless you are into Dolby Atmos or something, don't waste your time. Even then my understanding is Atmos is software driven so it all depends on the implementation there. Get a good pair of normal headphones and be happy.

u/kenabi · 1 pointr/buildapc

i'm rocking a set of senn 598SEs (now the 598SR or C[closed back, lower imp], but both are slightly cheaper feeling build quality, but still decent enough) paired to a presonus firepod (mostly because i prefer fulltime streaming vs packet protocols for audio, but to each their own) and my mic is an MXL 990 on an articulating boom arm. speakers are presonus eris e5's with an onkyo powered subwoofer run though a 2 channel 15 band eq.

i will admit i go a bit overboard with these things. :)

as side notes; presonus has many audiobox variants that tend to be a bit cheaper, and there's a lot of general things you can plug in a machine via usb or pci-e that will give you equal quality if all you care about is basic in/out but clear.

as for mics the MXL line has a bunch of other options including the 770 which is just as nifty, at 50-60 usd. its not quite as awesome for vocal recording if you're into proper production, but it'll suffice for anyone doing streaming/youtube/general gaming stuff where relative clarity is desired. there's usb variants as well, for those who wish to keep things as simple as possible.

speakers; i have no complaints with my eris e5s, but i will be the first to admit they aren't fully flat like a set of monitors should be. they suffice for my needs though. and at $200/set they were awesome with a nice full sound that really only lacked that really low end punch. if not getting a 'proper' interface for it, you'll need to get the right cables to hook up to a regular pc style sound card (either 3.5mm to rca cable or some of the higher end audio cards have rca outs, so the eris speakers will hook up with straight rca cables in those cases. i have no idea what ROKRs have for connections, its been a while.)

the sub is literally just some 10" powered sub from a thrift store run i had kicking around and is usually hooked to my av setup. if it sounds alright and has the relevant hookups (my eq has a set of unbalanced RCA outs, for instance, gotten specifically for the subwoofer hookup) then you're gold and can sort of cheap out. it doesn't go as low as i want, but i'll be building my own solely for the subsonic potential later on. if you're in an apartment, perhaps skip the sub if you wish to be nice to your neighbors :)

don't cheap out on cables, but don't drop the bank. avoid monster. any decent music shop will be able to point you to a decent ratio of good/cost. if you can afford it and know how to solder, make your own with mogami or similar quality (quality, not cost!) bulk cable and some neutrik ends. you don't have to get mogami, there are some good lower end brands, and i imagine the folks over at gearslutz forum could point you in the right direction for any and all cable needs, as well as anything else. there's probably reviews and testings of most of the gear you could want to know about as well.

cheers!

The Bose QuietComfort 25 headset is on sale on amazon.ca for $229, $100 off. I had been looking at Sennheiser HD 598Cs, but are the Boses worth it for the extra $70?

I'd be primarily using them as a PS4 gaming headset, but only for party chat, no game audio. As I understand it, the 3.5mm cable for both those headsets have a built-in mic, which I'm hoping will suit my purpose?

I'd also be taking them on planes once or twice a year, using them on a laptop to watch TV/movies.

Comfort is my top priority, being able to wear them for a few hours at a time without hurting my ears.

I'm a complete noob at buying headphones, I've just used cheap junk in the past that hurt my ears, so I'd like to spend some money on something that will be good quality, and last a while. I'd be willing to consider other recommendations as well, as long as they're not open back so I can use them in public.

Ah I gotcha. In that case, I recommend you just do buy-n-try from Amazon.
Sorry I don't know how far you'd need to schedule or if he'd have anything closed back in stock around your price point. I guess it depends on his schedule. They're a pretty high-end shop.

Here are a few suggestions all at around the same price point:

Innerfidelity review of HD 569 (Directly compares to M50x)
https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/sennheiser-hd569-around-ear-sealed-headphones

Honestly, I own the M50x and like them, especially with the Brainwavz pads even though they change the sound a bit. The comfort is worth it.
But, if you were to ask me today, I'd probably go with one of the Senns. I LOVE my HD 598 open-back cans. They are insanely comfortable. The closed back version should be pretty similar. Unfortunately, I can't find any direct head to head reviews of the 598 Cs vs 569, but that's where you demoing comes in.

Also, I'll remind you that Sennheisers usually go on sale at Black Friday and you can probably get one of the two for around $99 so it may be in your best interest to wait a week and see. That way you come in way under budget and can just return to Amazon if you don't like.

Let us know what you end up with and how you like them!

Budget ~150-200$

Source - Pixel 2 / Macbook Pro

Requirements for Isolation - Some. Not a huge priority, but nice to have for public transit.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Yes

Preferred Type of Headphone - IEMS or portable over-ear. Possibly bluetooth if there are good options.

Past headphones - MEE audio M6 PRO Liked the sound quality, but they didn’t fit very nicely in my ears, despite trying all of the tips that came with the box.

Brainwavz Delta Black IEM
Again, liked the sound quality, but the buds themselves seemed to be too fat to fit into my ears, even with trying all the tips they gave me.

[Panasonic RP-TCM125-K] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E4LGVUO/ref=psdc_172541_t1_B00L2459ZO) Really liked the fit for these. If possible I’d love to find something similar to these in fit, but perhaps a higher quality build or sound quality.

https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Cs-Headphone/dp/B01JP436TS Also really like these, but I’ve found that they are too bulky for general portable use.

Preferred Music - Wide range. A lot of quiet female vocalist indie music, as well as a lot of fast and loud ska/punk music. I also listen to a fair amount of spoken audio, such as podcasts and audiobooks. I listen to hip-hop as well, but not as much as the above.

What would you like to improve - As stated in the past headphones section, I am looking to improve the fit of the IEMs that I get. The panasonic ones fit so well compared to the other IEMs I’ve had in the past, so I am looking to get something with a similar fit, but with a better sound stage. Also, I’m looking to try Bluetooth IEMs if anything comes to mind with these requirements, but if not, regular IEMs / over-ears are fine for me.

____

I’ve been eying these: https://www.amazon.com/Jaybird-Bluetooth-Headset-iPhone-Android/dp/B01M7NCT5O and these: https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Bluetooth-Headphones-Controller-RP-HJE120B-W/dp/B071R6VX9Q for bluetooth iem options, but as far as I can tell the reviews for them do not seem completely stellar.

I was also looking into ATH-M40Xs as a portable over ear option, but I’m not sure if I want to sacrifice having a microphone on my main pair of portable headphones.

This is the link to the HD598.

And here is the DAC they're talking about.

The Orei(?) doesn't seem to be affiliated with Sennheiser at all.

Thanks!

I got another recommendation for the Sennheiser HD 598 Cs. Have you had any experience with those? How would you compare them to the Audio Technica ATH MSR7?

Budget - $150 - $200 CAD, $250 MAX

Source - I phone 5 SE and computer

Requirements for Isolation - Yes prefer Isolation. Using while traveling on bus, walking, at school (can get noisy sometimes). Using while studying

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over ear preferred unless IEM is very comfortable.

Preferred tonal balance - I like Bass but for studying it can get annoying, so balanced I suppose?

Past headphones - cheap OEM earbuds (Samsung, apple) and KZ Zs3

Preferred Music - Deep House, [Rap]

Other relevant info - slightly bigger ears. Lol

Thanks everyone

It'd help if you specified what kind of headphones you've tried before. I've got a big head and I wear glasses and I've had issues with headphones and headsets before like the ATH M50.

The best headphones I've had comfort wise were the Sennheiser HD 598, which I believe they've replaced with a newer model. Those headphones are super comfy and I had never had any issues wearing them for extremely long gaming sessions.

Looks like the replacement model is called the Sennheiser HD 598 Cs, which you can pick up on amazon for $150 in the US. Looks like there's also a sale on refurbished models for $100 on amazon.

I currently use a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms at work and those are also quite comfy. They're a bit tighter than the sennheiser 598s (bit more clamping force) but I find that just lengthening the bridge between the headphones is enough to keep them from being uncomfortable.

I also own some Sennheiser HD6XX which I think were a huge step down from the Sennheiser HD 598s in terms of comfort so I wouldn't recommend those.

>Interested in HD 598 but cheapest I can find is $250 - would it really be worth the extra $50?

HD 598 SR for $171.02 as of this post.

HD 599, basically an updated 598, for $186.06

Keep in mind those are both open-back, unlike the other headphones you listed. There will be no isolation and a not-insignificant amount of sound leakage if you're wearing them around other people.

If you meant the closed back HD 598 CS - that's $148.59

Hey sorry to bump this old thread but had a quick question. I found these :

https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-SR-Open-Back/dp/B01JP436TS

Which are basically the Closed Back version of the 598s (Didn't realize these existed).

Any experience with these / insight into how it may affect the sound?

It's what I did, now checking what music is best to test headphones. And thanks for the HD 598 CS xD. And don't worry homie, I got it covered.

Since you're taking /u/klepperx's suggestions and saving some money, you could get a much better microphone and still stay under budget. Since you're getting a desk microphone, there's no need to get a headset (although the Cloud / Cloud II would definitely be the ones to get). What kind of fit and sound signature do you like? Do you need the headphone to be portable? What are your requirements for isolation? Here's my reccommendations at ~$100:

  • Brainwavz HM5 - Closed back, over ear, neutral sound, not easily portable due to lack of folding hinge. Can also be found as Yoga CD880 and NVX XPT 100.
  • AKG K240 Studio - Open back (provides much better positional audio than even most virtual surround, but leaks sound and provides little isolation from background noise), over ear, neutral sound, not portable due to amp requirement.
  • Sennheiser HD 558 - Open back, over ear, neutral sound, not portable due to lack of folding hinge. These are my current headphones, and I can't say enough good things about them. They're very similar to the HD598, with the main difference being the material that they're made of.
  • Sennheiser HD 598 Cs - Closed back version of the HD 598, which are virtually the same as the HD 558. I actually thought these cost more, so they're a great deal. Be aware that they will have a different frequency response (read: more bass) due to being closed-back.
  • Audio Technica ATH-AD500x - Open back, over ear, bright (mid forward), not portable due to lack of folding hinge.

I have these headphones and need some help finding a good amp to go with them without breaking the bank.
