My favorite headphones Sennheiser HD598 SE went on sale last year for $94.99 during Black Friday. Just a heads up if you are looking for new headphones and want a pair of open cans. I am no expert but these are highly rated, and the SE black ones look great unless having two Noctua fans strapped to your head is more your style. Keep an eye for a deal on these for sure.

How big of a difference is there between hd 558s and HD 598s? Should I wait for 598s or just splurge on these?
Edit: I actually ended up picking up a used hd 598 SEs from amazon warehouse deals for slightly less

I'm only recently getting into the audiophile world, but I'll give this a shot from what I've discovered. The guys at /r/headphones would love to go into detail.

Lets take a 0-100 scale of audio quality, in which 0 is a person banging on a garbage can and badly humming the tune to a song, and 100 is literally being in the studio with the band recording.

A generic setup like an iphone and the iphone earbuds probably falls somewhere around a 65 on that scale. You can hear the song and make out the words and all, but there's not much intricacy and it has to be pretty loud to hear the different pieces of the music individually. The bass is probably bad and the sound-stage is very small.

Investing in something like THESE, which are occasionally <$100, would move you up to about 80. Its a HUGE jump in quality. You hear things in songs you never knew were there before. Any person with functional ears would easily hear the difference and universally prefer this sound over the cheap earbuds.

Add another $100 for an amp and dac and you're getting into the mid/high 80s on our quality scale. You can hear the music very much the way it sounded in the studio. Unless you're actively listening for differences you aren't likely to ever have a complaint with this type of setup.

Most reasonable people would probably stop in that range just because for a couple hundred bucks you can get a really good sound setup that satisfies the vast majority.

But without question a person with functional ears would be able to notice an improvement between the $200 setup I described and the $2,000 setup that includes headphones like these. If you have discerning ears you may even find the difference to be fairly large, although most people probably wouldn't think its that huge.

And then there's another step even above this, where you could spend >$10,000 on a setup from the truly top of the line. And yes that will sound better, but not 5x better. The higher up the ladder you climb the less pronounced the changes become.

Have Sennheiser 598's.

Footsteps have been incredibly spotty for a long time in this game. They acknowledged they were broke a while back, and did a couple changes to make them a bit more audible, but they're still not consistent.

u/aasteveo · 14 pointsr/headphones

>hd598

Whoa, are these like super jacked up right now to prep for the sale? It says 598's are $310! That's more than I spent on my HD600's ffs. Or am I missing something?

u/kRiiLiiN · 14 pointsr/headphones

I agree with the other comments here, don't worry about spending more to get more. If you haven't heard decent headphones (designed for the sound quality not the looks or marketing) then something cheaper will still be impressive.

Here are some recommendations to get you started:

Not as low as previous sales, but Sennheiser HD598s are $109.99

To piggyback, I use the Sennheiser 598s and they are fanfuckingtastic.

u/philip1243 · 9 pointsr/hiphopheads
  1. Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Great over ear headphones, more bass driven, but pretty well rounded sound. Good for being submersed in your music.
  2. Sennheiser HD 598 Awesome open ear headphones, nice and roomy sound. (open back headphones allow outside sound in.) Great for acoustics and softer music.
  3. FiiO EX1 My daily driver, which are surprisingly really nice. Great balanced sound for In ear, super comfortable too. Punchy bass when needed and handles light and relaxed music with good highs.
u/punkkapoika · 9 pointsr/headphones

Setup:

140€ HD598's, best headphones for the price I have tried.

40€ Audio HiFi 6J9 Amplifier, the difference to the PC soundcard (Hero VIII Maximus) is huge. I would recommend it for any HD598 user.

35€ DA3 SA9227 + PCM5102A DAC, not a huge difference to my ear.

u/Xanderoga · 8 pointsr/PS4

I have a pair of these and cannot recommend them enough. They feel great even after using them all day, rich sounds both for music and gaming.

Since you live in London I assume you've got a few quid to spare, so here's a 50 grand pair, the Sennheiser Orpheus

The Sennheiser HD 598 (not the Cs!) are in the mexican Amazon store as deal of the day at $1798 MXN, about $86~ USD. I dont know if they ship to the US, but you guys might want to check it out. I already picked up a pair, and I'm tempted to get a second one.

You're not really gonna get quality with wireless, both build and probably audio quality. Sennheiser HD598s were just on sale for $129, and that leaves ~50 for a standalone mic, or a ModMic.

Edit: Still on sale

u/OneTime_AtBandCamp · 6 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Don't know about speakers but the Senheisser HD 598 SE is on sale for $110 again, pretty good deal. In fact they're on sale for $110CAD in Canada and $110 USD in the US, so Canadians are for once getting the better deal.

u/BlasterSarge · 5 pointsr/classicalmusic

I'll recommend the three pairs of headphones that I use on a regular basis. I know you asked for over-ear, but even as an over-ear guy myself I've still gotten a lot of utility from all three of them, so they're all certainly worth considering.

--

MEE Audio Sport-fi M6P- These are my daily workhorse earbuds. I wear them a good 6 hours a day, and they stay fairly comfortable throughout; they wrap around the ear and fit quite nicely. Includes an on-cord volume adjustment, microphone, and pause/play button, if that matters to you. They run around $19, and they're far and away the best headphones I've ever used in this price range.

--

Sony MDR-V6- These were my first step into the world of "real" headphones. They've been industry standard studio monitors since the 80s, and for good reason. Sound is clean and crisp, with a fairly balanced sound signature and particularly good mids (seeing as classical music isn't particularly "bass heavy" having mids as a strong point is ideal; you definitely wouldn't want a bass-head pair of cans). They're foldable, and so I find them rather portable. They're over-ear and closed-back so they're not going to bleed sound all over the place, but they don't have the best isolation so if your daily traffic is particularly noisy (e.g.: downtown of large city or louder) that might be a bit of an issue for you, but if you're in areas a bit more quiet (e.g.: office, cafe, smaller city) they'll do you fine. They're not the most fashionable things and they also have a coiled cable, neither of which bother me but could be an issue for some. They run about $80, and if you're coming from cheap gas station quality headphones these will probably knock your socks off.

Sennheiser HD 598- Of the three, these are the best. Amazingly warm and rounded, with a spacious, open, and detailed sound. They have really good instrument separation as well, which obviously lend themselves quite well to listening to classical music. Extraordinarily comfy for an indefinite period of time. However, these are my "home" headphones, as they are open back and provide absolutely no isolation whatsoever- I can hold a conversation perfectly well with someone with these on and my volume at 70%, so they'd be utterly useless in any public space. The open back provides an excellent soundstage, but that's the price you pay. Speaking of price, they run at around $150, but they go on sale with some frequency for $99.

--

I personally would recommend getting the earbuds and the 598s, with one being an out and about pair and one for being a home pair. That's what I usually roll about with, and between the two of them I don't really use the V6s anymore as a consequence. That being said, if you're only going to buy one pair as your be all end all, the V6 is a great purchase- I used them exclusively for 4 years and was never disappointed. If these don't float your boat though, I'd recommend hopping over to /r/headphones or www.head-fi.org and see what they have to say- they're both extraordinarily helpful communities with huge and knowledgeable user bases.

So far the Bose Sound True II for apple seems pretty good. Too bad the deal wasn't for the android variant of it :( https://www.amazon.com/Bose-SoundTrue-around-ear-headphones-II/dp/B0117RFX38/

Don't think Im taking a chance on those bose earbuds. All the reviews rip it's Build Quality apart. I mean IEM's are mostly plastic but how do you make it that bad lol.

Sennheiser 598's SE are back on sale for 110$ 10$more than the lowest. Pretty good if you want open back. https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0126HISOO/

Pink Cloud II's for 75$ is pretty good. One of the best gaming headsets for your money. https://www.amazon.com/HyperX-Cloud-Gaming-Headset-PS4/dp/B00Y09G6H8/

Beyer Custom Street?!?! what are these? Bassier versions of the custom ones? Now even sure if it's a deal at 99$ https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-Custom-Street-Headphones-Black/dp/B00UK7ZQXO/

Other than the usual cheap ass wood earbuds and shitty gamer headphones this sale seems kinda sad :(

So far pretty good for entry level stuff but that's the "amazon" usual so it seems with every big sale.

'Gaming' is just a term companies use to cater to people who play video games (gamers). You don't want to buy from someone like Logitech who makes mice, keyboards, webcams, desktop speakers, 'gaming' headsets, etc.

You want to buy a pair of quality headphones (not headset) from a music company like Audio-Technica (Japan), Sennheiser (Germany), AKG, Grado, Shure, Bower & Wilkins (UK) and so on. These companies (besides maybe Sennheiser) don't really advertise to gamers, so you're kind of stuck in the loop of Logitech, Corsair, HyperX, Creative, etc.

I'm not sure what kind of music you're into, so I can't make any suggestions but I can give you starter things to look into. Check out the suggestion thread over in /r/headphones. Add a standalone mic or a V-Moda Boom Mic.

  • Mouse - Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum. Good weight and decent button placement.
  • Keyboard - IBM Model M 1391401. Buckling spring keyboards are great!
  • Headphones - Sennheiser HD598. Open back gives a huge soundstage for gaming. Amazing headphones.
  • Microphone - Samson Meteor. Very accurate microphone that is very sensitive, so be careful what you say on the other side of the house. If the mic is open everyone will hear. In Discord you can adjust the sensitivity so that it is only open when you speak and that works quite well.

If you care about how good your audio sounds at all, upgrade your headphones and your speakers. I recommend the Sennheiser HD598 (HD598SE if you don't like the color) or the Audio-Technica ATH-M50. Both are very nice mid-range headphones, and will most likely completely change your outlook in sound. Go with the 598s if you can, but they are open headphones so anybody around you will be able to hear what you're listening to.

For speakers, I'm using the Swan M10. They have very very nice sound for their price, but they are extremely difficult to find. I got mine in Massdrop.com for a little under $100. /r/audiophile will be able to give you some more recommendations for speakers, but I'm a headphone man myself so I don't know a whole lot about speakers.

Personally, if you're wanting to get some solid cans, you can't go wrong with the HD 598s from Sennheiser or the DT 990 Pro from Beyerdynamic. Both sound fantastic on the V20, and have solid build quality.

r/headphones is a step in the right direction if you'd like to know more!

u/Kerry56 · 3 pointsr/headphones

HD 598 is a good all rounder. Many like the less expensive HD 558 too, and it is said to have a little more bass. If you are in the US, Best Buy still sells the HD558.

u/mrselkies · 3 pointsr/audiophile

u/Blais_Of_Glory · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

What's your budget? Where do you live? What type of music do you listen to? Are you looking for headphones that can be used for gaming? Do you need a mic with the headphones? What is the music coming from? For example, if you're listening to music through your computer and your headphones are connected to the computer, you would be better off getting a DAC and amp combo (something like the Schiit Fulla/Schiit Fulla on Amazon or FiiO E10K or Audioengine D1 or AudioQuest DragonFly) and then getting better headphones. I personally have tried several different brands and Sennheiser are my favorites. I currently have Sennheiser PC 363D (on Amazon) for gaming, movies, and TV and have the Sennheiser HD 598 SE (on Amazon) for music.

u/Zarphos · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

It has been at $200 for all of November until now. It has only been for sale since beginning of October so there's not a lot of history. You can use website camelcamelcamel.com to check price history of amazon products. Here's the link for this product.

http://camelcamelcamel.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Cs-Headphone/product/B01JP436TS

I assume it's a similar product to other 598 models like these:

http://camelcamelcamel.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/product/B0126HISOO

But that may be a bad assumption on my part. Hope I helped.

u/sfw_account_no_boobs · 2 pointsr/headphones

You have some options here, all up to you. You can use camel^3 to track the prices and alert you when they go below a certain amount. The C's just went on sale on BF (I got mine then) so it may be a bit before another deal, but apparently right now they are $114 on amazon! The SE's are still around $150, but like I said, I would get those. The C's are great, but they really do close off sound around you and it can be jarring sometimes. I've also heard the SE's are more comfortable to wear.

u/TealcLOL · 2 pointsr/Vive

Right now I use the Philips Fidelio X2. They're great quality and don't really need an AMP to shine, so I plug them right into the Vive. However there have been some manufacturing defects in some of the models. Be careful if picking those up.

Alternatively, I hear great things about the very popular Sennheiser HD 598. Hard to go wrong with those. Just be aware both of those models I mentioned are open headphones. Sound will easily leak in and out of the headphones (i.e. use only in a quiet environment). They also make a headset (mic'd) version of those, both open & closed.

Definitely do your research before buying a new pair of anything, but they can really be worth it.

u/sassycatty · 2 pointsr/CFB

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0126HISOO/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1480819664&sr=1-6&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65

Lordy that's a big link but they are in the 100-300 range I would research them first along with other brands. Just remember these are flat headphones so the bass won't be boosted like they are in the beats. I mostly use mine to produce and watch movies but music sounds really solid on them.

Definitely look up what qualities you want in a headphone though. Do you want to use them in public? These aren't the best since they have absolutely no isolation. Beats aren't bad but in terms of sound quality, you can definitely do better. I'm a bit of an audiophile but I'd being lying if I told you I didn't enjoy listening to rap/bassy music on beats headphones.

u/awesomecvl · 2 pointsr/headphones

Personally these seem great for your uses but the don't block out too much noise... Other than that they seem perfect! http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0126HISOO/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1450313481&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=Hd598

u/Z4bimmer · 2 pointsr/gadgets

audio technica ath-m50x

Best headphones I've had by far, sound quality is great but the one downside I have is that they are a bit bulky and have some weight to them.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0126HISOO/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1492435284&sr=8-6&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=sennheiser+head+phones&dpPl=1&dpID=41bMMAXlJZL&ref=plSrch

These senheisers are a good happy medium, they have an open back so they're not noise cancelling but you can easily tune other noise out. They are lightweight and have similar sound to the audio Technica. The open back is a slight drawback with these as others may be able to hear your music at loud volume but I've never ran into this problem. They do however make a closed back version which would eliminate this problem but might add weight, I'm not sure.

Both of these choices are very good for the price and quality and I would recommend both

u/HerejeAlex · 2 pointsr/CLG

I specifically recommend this pair mate. They are really good.

While you ask for a closed design I feel like if you're listening to classical you'll get a better experience from an open pair of headphones. If you still want a closed design the M50 will serve you well however you could find some other options in the recommendation section here or from Head-Fi.

Sennheiser HD598 if you want a fairly decent neutral option, I personally have its bigger brother (HD600). Sennheisers sound signature works really well for classical music. You could also try the Philips SHP9500 which offer a similar experience and are a fair bit cheaper most of the time.

I'm the thrifty kinda guy.

Refurbished Denon receiver, 2 Micca bookshelves, a Micca center channel, and a Bic America subwoofer. About 700 bucks total. Sounds good enough for me. I know much better is out there but it's hard to justify the costs.

My Sennheiser HD598SE's are great ($150), and I have a FiiO E10K ($75) that they plug into at work, and at home I just plug them in directly since the onboard soundcard isn't too bad surprisingly on my motherboard. I have a Sony SRS-X5 bluetooth speaker plugged into the back of it as well. I have those cheap-ass sony ANC headphones (20 bucks at the time I bought them) and they get the job done at a cheap price for planes and for the AC unit blasting in my office (I know... killing me, 80db of white noise all day long).

I have a friend from work that spent 50,000 bucks on his setup. It sounds great, and it's worth it, but I couldn't spend that much on it.

I'm more of a headphone kinda guy. My next upgrade would probably be going all out on headphones. A pair of Sennheiser HD800's probably. That's in the far future, I got stuff I want to do around the house first.

These are my workout earbuds

They are a great value.

The Sennheiser HD598s are awesome!

They come in a couple different colours as well.

Keep in mind these are open-back headphones, so the soundstage is much better than you would get from closed, but there's absolutely no noise-isolation (meaning anyone near you would be able to hear the music blasting out of your headphones). They're great for home listening, no so great for listening on the bus, at work, etc.

u/bronzedburrito · 2 pointsr/teenagers

What's your budget on headphones? My friend just got a pair of these and they're some of the best I've heard.

u/drewlinskii · 2 pointsr/Twitch

I still haven't upgraded much in just a little over a year of streaming, but there are many things that I would love to upgrade.

Actually, just yesterday, I ordered a new mic. The Samson C01 from a cheap Excelvan BM-800 I got over a year ago. Would have gone with an AT2020, BUT I just don't have the budget to get that, especially while still trying to save up for an Xbox One. Only reason I'm upgrading the mic is because there's been an annoying buzzing in the background for the last few months, and it just recently started bypassing the noise gate!

Other upgrades I'd like in order of importance are:

  • Xbox One
  • Elgato HD60 Pro - Because my Avermedia is starting to fail me
  • Upgrade PC - i7-4790k, new MB, new/more RAM, new case, and SSD.
  • New Peripherals - Headset, Keyboard, Monitor.

I personally swear by Sennheiser headphones. If you're looking for a budget headset, their 202's are very solid. If you've got a bit of a heftier budget, I use their HD 598's, as they're lightweight, very comfy to wear, and have tremendously good sound quality.

u/dukeofpizza · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I have this set and its absolutely great, crystal clear audio in games. Picked it up to try and get into podcasting. I've also upgraded to a pair of Sennheiser HD 598s and they are wonderful, sound great through the Focusrite interface.

If you just need a cheap budget mixer for a few mics and game input I would look at this.

u/heartcall · 2 pointsr/Vive

I'd definitely recommend the "special edition" black 598s. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0126HISOO/

The standard 558 and standard ivory-and-brown 598 both only come with a 10 foot long cord with a 1/4" jack. Very inconvenient length, and the 1/4 to 1/8 adapter is the size of my entire pinkie finger. But the special edition black 598s come with an additional 4' long cord with a standard 1/8" jack. That cable is about $10-15 if purchased separately.

I only deal with open headphones so here's what I'd recommend. You can skip an amp with any of these and be fine.

Audio-Technica ath-ad900x - I have these with the exact setup you want. The modmic was a little annoying to get to attach right but it hasn't fallen off. They sound great but not a ton of low end. The head suspension thing is comfy but kinda fiddly. Steal a worn out hair tie from your girl and put it between the arms and then forget it's there. Recommended without hesitation.

Sennheiser HD598 - warm sound, comfy. Not much to say, they're easy to listen to, easy to drive, and they're reasonably priced. Also recommend without hesitation.

I'd advise against the DT-990s unless you can return them if you don't like them. The v-shape sound is very polarizing and you'll either like it or you won't. I found the highs to be like an ice pick to the brain with most things I listened to. Some well produced stuff sounded great but they're fatiguing to listen to. They are also the most uncomfortable headphones I've ever put on my head, ymmv. I returned them.

If you feel like hitting the top of your budget I LOVE my Philips Fidelio X2. These actually replaced my Audio-Technicas as my daily driver. Great bass, good mid range, little grainy on the highs but it isn't harsh and how much depends on the recording. They're really comfortable but also a little on the heavy side. Again, recommend you buy from somewhere you can return just in case.

Any other questions let me know.

u/ledit0ut · 2 pointsr/politics

These headphones are so underrated with all these fashion brands like Beats and Monster charging twice the price for shit quality sound.

I also highly recommend Sennheiser headphones.

Edit: I have these and they are amazing. These are open back headphones so not good for heavy bass but there is also a closed version. The ear pads are breathable so they remain cool on my ears.

> listening at a reasonably low volume Should be fine

So far it seems there's enough ambient noise in the office that I can listen at whatever volume I find comfortable. Definitely won't be blasting them, but that's fine!

> People who have replaced the pads with the HM5 velours seem to be quite pleased

I read a number of threads on the topic before I bought them. It definitely seems like the right way to go for me, since I'm going to be wearing these for so long every day. I'll post my thoughts once they arrive and I've had some time with them.

> Good luck on sorting out your library and acquiring a DAC; there are plenty of options to choose from.

Thanks! I've got a few recommendations from friends. I just wish I could try them out first, you know? Maybe I can find a local store that has some in stock.

> I always thought Astro A50s were more expensive than that

Forgot to mention I'm in Canada. Retail for Sennheiser HD 598 SE on Amazon is $279.99.

The new A50s are $349.99, but the first generation (the ones I own) retailed for $299.99

So really only $20 difference.

I also snagged the 598s for $160 lightly used from someone looking to upgrade to HD 800s.

> Also, on a side note: your old headphones bear a striking resemblance to the Turtle Beach X12 .

Holy fuck o_O that looks identical. Mine even had the mic boom originally until I removed it by force :P

I wonder if Turtle Beach licensed that design from iMego, or maybe the other way around?

  • Headphones:
  • Sennheiser HD598 | Frequency Graph

  • Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 Ohms | Frequency Graph
  • DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter)/Amplifier Combo:

  • Amplifier only:
  • FiiO E6
  • Creative Sound Blaster E1

The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros have great bass response, while the Sennheiser HD598's aren't as punchy in the bass. That being said, the DT770's present a bit more in the high-end frequencies, and some might find that unbalanced.

The HD598's are certainly more balanced in their presentation. The HD558's are the cheapest option, but present great value for somebody looking for a bit more bass than the HD598's, but less than the DT770's.

Any of these headphones paired with a proper headphone amplifier will provide a good listening experience, but different. While both Sennheiser's are open-back and will breath more to provide a wider sound stage, the Beyerdynamics are closed back and will provide a more narrow sound stage, but provide more bass response.
u/Rutgrr · 2 pointsr/audioengineering

A little bit ubiquitous, but I'd probably suggest the three following, they're basically seen as the "basic bitch" tier that's high quality but doesn't break the bank.

  • Phillips SHP9500
  • Audio Technica ATH-M50X
  • Sennheiser HD598

Personally, I use the Phillips ones since I got them on a sale and they were the cheapest. The next thing to look into would probably be a DAC, but that's where my knowledge basically ends, since I went with the most straightforward solution possible and got a DACPort mini off Massdrop.

Get whatever Sennheisers are within your price range. 7.1 surround headphones don't exist, and often the surround sound simulation software messes with the original game audio mastering. Personally I'd go with the Sennheiser HD 598SE https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0126HISOO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468620520&sr=8-1&keywords=HD+598SE

I'm using a pair of Sennheiser 598s.

u/Flojani · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Check out the Audio Technica M50X. They are currently $167. If you wait, you can probably get them on sale for around $120 or even cheaper sometimes. They are closed back, but you should be able to hear your surroundings well enough. They will also work just fine without an AMP or a DAC.

Another option could be the Sennheiser HD598. They are currently $144.93. These headphones don't seem to go on sale too often, but I think Amazon puts them on sale for around $100 every Black Friday or Cyber Monday. I don't think you want to wait that long though. Unlike the other headphones I recommended, these are open back. So you will be able to hear your surroundings perfectly. As for sound bleeding, you really do not need to worry about that unless you put your headphones on full volume (literally full volume). Otherwise, people will have to be really close to you (3 ft or closer) to hear anything come out of them and right next to your ear to be able to understand what you are listening to. These also work just fine without an amp or dac. As for sound clarity, these should be on par with the M50X. However, they will have a better sound stage (because of the open back design) and the bass is probably stronger on these (not overpowering though).

Both of these headphones are probably the most popular when it comes to that price range. I strongly suggest starting out with one of those pairs of headphones. They should suit your needs for almost anything you need.

u/Zomb1eV1rus · 1 pointr/headphones

First I will start this out with: I have never bought headphones worthy of the name "audiophile". But im very interested in learning about different headphones and such.

Budget - $200 flexible budget

Source - computer motherboard connections or amp if needed

Isolation - none

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - No

Preferred Type of Headphone - Around ear

Preferred tonal balance - balanced

Past headphones - Razer Kraken 7.1, I liked the leds ha nothing else.

Preferred Music - I listen to many types of rock. From Smashing Pumpkins to bands like Five Finger death Punch.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - More comfort, better sound, better everything.

  • I will be using these headphones for hours nonstop each day so i would like them to be comfortable.
  • I play games on steam for many hours, listen to music and I watch you tube a lot.
  • I would like headphones that preferably have open back so I can hear myself talk in a game and also because I heard that a wide sound stage really helps in games that sound is vital (like csgo which I play a good amount).
  • If I would need a amp to run the headphones that would be fine also.

Currently what Im thinking of getting is the
Sennheiser HD 598 SE with the FiiO E10K amp/dac and a modmic 5.0.

Basically what Im asking is for the much more experienced in sound to suggest what you think I should get headphone and amp wise (if needed). Thank you all that respond.
u/Neversync · 1 pointr/headphones

Hello. I have a relative in Italy that could buy a pair of headphones for me, since it would be cheaper from there. I found this nice deal on the Sennheiser HD598 Special Edition (110 euros from 230). I was originally going for the ATH AD700X but they're 170 euros. The AKG K702 is 155. DT 990 Pro are 133. So considering the insane price, would you recommend anything else? Let's say... maybe it would be worth spending 50+ euros on x pair because of y or whatnot. I'll mostly use them for gaming, music I listen in general is EDM stuff. If you'll take the time to search there, I'm probably looking to spend max to 150-170, if not you can give me recommended brands/models and I'll search them up myself.

Edit: reformatted.

Check amazon for prices because Sennheiser doesn't really drop prices over time. For sub 200 if he already has a mic I'd suggest the HD 598 amazing sound very well balanced, and very comfortable. Plus it can be upgraded with an amp for unparalleled sound for the price later down the line.

I have a question about the Sennheiser 598's on Amazon...

There are seemingly two versions of the 598's on Amazon, and that's a with mic version and without mic version. My question is why is the with mic version more expensive than the non mic version? I am curious as to if there is an actual sound quality difference between the two headphone versions. I planned on buying a blue snowball with these but if the with mic version is just the same thing as the no mic version with some garbage mic coming separately(not a part of the headset/attached) then I will just purchase that instead of paying an extra $30+shipping(I have prime) for literally nothing.

u/Fj0ergyn · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

If you don't have one already, a second monitor (24 inches, 60Hz is more than enough for a secondary monitor, imo) makes life so much better.

And it's not that expansive of an upgrade if you go with 60Hz.

Alternatively, you might want to consider getting a headphone + microphone setup instead of a dedicated headset, as audio quality is waaaay better. Generally recommended are the Sennheiser HD598.

u/ninj0e · 1 pointr/headphones

Yup, most cans with great soundstage (great for gaming) will be open back. It was these ones that dropped to about $100 CAD last year during BF. I used them myself for a little while before getting K7XX's and can definitely say they are incredible for their price point, in both personal use or as a gift.

There's a closed back variant here but I can't attest to them personally since they're quite new and imagine the quality, at least in soundstage, won't be as good.

Second of all, I would recommend you the Sennheiser HD598s The Hd598s have an open design and therefore better soundstage. Add an Amp+DAC, Fiio E10k (has bass boost).

Although, I have no personal experience with AudioTechica, they are highly recommended.

u/aabeba · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

The Sennheiser HD598 were on sale last year for $99 and the HD598 SE were on sale a week ago for the same price. They're probably the best you can get for that price, and they generally sound loud enough without an amp. Lot of other solid stuff between $50 and $100, you should check out /r/headphones if you're interested. But if you want my advice, you can skip a lot of the entry-level stuff in favor of a nice 2.1 setup with a pair of monitors and a subwoofer (if you have the space and money and can afford to play music through speakers).

Id recommend getting a pair of headphones with an on desk microphone instead. All gaming headsets are incredibly overpriced and cheaply made.

If money is no issue then this is what I would recommend these. I am using these headphones after using countless different brands of headsets and I could never go back. I have no doubt that going headphone/desk microphone is superior to headsets.

As for the mic that is something you can choose for yourself since there are ones that go for $10 and are perfectly fine.

Hope this helps! :)

Pretty solid build. If you don't really have a set budget, you could up your audio game by getting something like a Sennheiser HD598 / AT2020 (or another similar XLR condenser microphone) and a Scarlett Solo for roughly $330.

Note if you go with something like this, you need to get a mic stand / pop filter.

  • Sounds great, I think you'll be happy with the 6700K

  • This sounds like a good idea. Both the headphones and mic you listed are great. Just to give you another option for headphones, Sennheiser HD 598 would be a great option too.

  • I think you'll like the G502, but its hard to be certain. Razer can be good, but I've heard that they have poor QA and often break down after a short time. The Steel Series Rival 300 is my current favorite mouse, but it might be a little small for your liking.

  • You won't be able to add a second M.2 drive, but you can add a larger one. You can, however, add SATA drives. A 500GB or 1TB 850 Evo would be great depending on how much storage you need. As for video files, I'd definitely put those on a HDD (no need for those to be on a SSD).

  • IKEA desk tops can be good for whatever you need, there's a lot of customization you can do. I recommend getting a dual arm VESA mount for the monitors, this will save a ton of space and it'll look great.

As for the compatibility flag on PCPartpicker - this just means that you'll have one less active SATA port when you use a M.2 SSD. This isn't a problem, but you need to be mindful that one of the SATA ports (which is where you plug in HDDs, SATA SSDs, optical drives, etc.) will be disabled, so you can't use that one for a SATA drive.

these are the ones i use, they are relatively cheap and reliable, but i wear them over a hat cause they are not the most comfortable for longer sessions :p

Headphones

Amp

DAC

Can I use my headphones with my amp and DAC? I was looking at the back of the amp and I noticed it only has output for normal speaker wire or banana plugs, which i don't think I can use with the headphones.

On the Amazon page the headphones say they come with a 3.5mm adaptor. Doing so would enable me to just plug right into my laptop, but this wouldn't power the headphones nearly enough, would it?

If not I can buy a new amp, I just want to avoid buying something I don't need.

Would this headphone amp/DAC work for me?

does he own a lot of high end headphones already? I mean if he already has a lot of headphones it may not be the best option but if he does not have anything you can certainly a lot of "cool" headphones in that price range.

Are you buying the one with the mix amp? If so any modern xbox one controller can just plug in the mic cord for chat and use the mix amp aux out to plug into your dac, which you can run into your xbox's optical port. Or I would just buy these guys with this mic. You can then use this DAC. That dac has all the cables you would need to get up and running. But I would seriously consider that second setup to the Astros.

Budget: Under $150 or so, but flexible. Bonus if anything under $80.

Source: Mainly my computer at work, a macbook pro. Might use it for listening to music on phone on the go, and my Lenovo laptop. I have a nice pair of Sennheiser's for home.

Requirements for Isolation: Going to use at work and in public. Noise cancelation would be nice, but I know budget wise that will add to it. I also need as little leakage as possible, I hate it when people can hear what I am listening to even when the volume is low.

Preferred Type of Headphone: Full sized/over ear. Headphones that sit on the ear (unless they are the foam ones, which have a lot of leakage) tend to hurt after a bit so I avoid them.

Preferred tonal balance: Honestly not sure. I am a noob at this. So probably balanced.

Past headphones: I dislike earbuds for the most part with the exception of these. I can use non-angled ones but the one I linked is the most comfortable I've used. The kind of style Apple sells hurts my ears after only a few min. I want to try to avoid using earbuds to much as I know it's not good for hearing (though I tend to listen to music at a low volume to prevent this too). For at home use (when not using a cheap headset for gaming, sob) I use these Sennheiser's and love them. At some point I should get a mic attachment so I could use them for gaming as the sound is wonderful.

Preferred Music: I hop all over, but I listen to electronic type music and soundtracks (background more than lyrical).

What would you like to improve on from your set-up Not really sure?

They seem to have forgotten to include I purchased the Schiit stack is that it would not to been pushed in painfully. I also second the recommendation to try the Onkyo DP-X1, that one is supposed to mean in technical terms. Also wasn't sure which sound signature was not what I use these Sennheiser's and love them.

Someone please help me decide. Hd 598's for 180$ or [AKG K7xx for 300$]
(https://www.massdrop.com/buy/akg-k7xx-massdrop-first-edition-headphones?mode=guest_open) Both will be powered by a Monoprice Desktop Amp/Dac

I will say that I do appreciate bass and lower mids, listening to a lot of EDM style music with some metal in there too. Are the K7xx's worth the extra cheddar?

u/hl1pc · 1 pointr/headphones
  • Budget

    $100-$300 flexible

  • Source

    3.5mm jack on a laptop

  • Where you mainly will use your headphones

At work and perhaps occasional flights. Office doesn't have much chatter but has very annoying drone sounds from HVAC and buzzy fluorescent lights

  • Requirements for Isolation

The sweet spot would block out droning sounds but not people trying to get my attention without raising their voice

  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public?

Just at work and perhaps occasional flights. It's important to me that sound doesn't leak out to others.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone

I think full-sized, but on-ear may be OK too if comfortable for all-day use

  • Preferred tonal balance

    Overall balanced

  • Past headphones

At home I've used in the past Sennheiser 280 pro (too busted up now and were never comfortable to wear for more than a couple hours) and currently Sennheiser HD 598SE. The latter in particular I love, very happy with the sound and they're terrifically comfortable to wear for hours on end. I'd probably just buy a second pair of these for work if I had some reason to believe they'd block/cancel the drone sounds well and they weren't open-back.

  • Preferred Music

    Electronic, classical, jazz, talk radio

  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up

Currently I'm using cheapo in-ear buds at work and it's awful. While they're fairly comfortable for extended use, even at louder volumes they don't mask the drone sounds very well. Probably what I would value most in a set of headphones for this office would be noise-cancelling, comfortable for all-day use, and no leakage (closed-back). An attached microphone would not be a deal-breaker but doesn't matter either way.

  • Things I don't know

I've never owned a pair of active noise cancelling headphones. Is it a gimmick? Are they effective for something like this? Can I get a quality pair at this budget that meets my needs and has this feature? Or is it better to forget it and instead focus on something that (without too much bulk!) "muffles" well?

    Thank you!
u/splicepoint · 1 pointr/audioengineering

I'm no pro but I have had the Sennheiser 598s for almost exactly a year now and love them. They're a bit north of your price range though ~$150. You may be able to find a deal, they go on sale fairly often.

u/AnimalDiscourse · 1 pointr/headphones

I'm going to get the HD598 as you suggested. I appreciate what the HD600 could offer, but I'm not willing to dig that deep into my pocket, especially being a rookie audiophile, this is probably a good place to start with a pair of open-backed headphones.

Having a 3.5mm jack is absolutely essential, I only plan on using via my laptop or iPhone. I probably won't plug into anything else. I'm sure there are adapters here and there but I don't want to have to take that route.

I'm definitely considering the Filo E10k to go along with them, I honestly don't know much about DAC/amps but I figure if it gets the most potential out of these headphones, I'll get it.

Sennheiser HD 598 Special Edition - is this the correct pair that you're talking about?

Also, on a side note, I just found out my order for the Zero Audio Carbo Tenore got cancelled by the seller after I was waiting months for it to get shipped (ships from Japan). Definitely unusual shipping time in my opinion, the thing never came so I filed for a refund. Now I'm in the market for a pair of IEMs to go with my new open-backed headphones. Any suggestions for something in the Carbo Tenore price range? I perused through the purchase guides and actually decided Carbo Tenore was my pick, but with the lengthy shipping time and poor previous experience, I'm looking to narrow down a second choice. The RHA MA350 was one of the first links I clicked, but this, as well as most of the other IEMs listed in the Buying Guide tend to have a lower Amazon rating than the Carbo Tenore's...Kind of bummed the lengthy shipping process didn't work out.

> don't quite match the white/black aesthetic

The SE HD598 are black, so that should help with your aesthetics. :D Plus they come with a removable cable unlike the white-brown ones, which is always a plus.

I unfortunately don't know of any ultrawide 120/144s; neither do I know of any that would look as good as IPS. So if image quality is more important, by all means stick to that one. You can still benefit from 100+ fps anyway even without a 120/144 Hz monitor when it comes to input lag.

I own the original HD598 and I have also preordered the HTC Vive. The HD598 is very very comfortable and light, and it has a circumaural fit around the ears... but I've been concerned about using open-back headphones for VR. I'm worried about outside noise being a detraction and possibly ruining the immersion, but I guess it's not a real problem when you're playing any sort of audio at a decent volume.

If you do choose to get the HD 598, try to get the Special Edition. It comes with an extra shorter cable (1.2m) so you can connect it directly to the Vive without having another long cable dangling around. You may still need to use a zip tie or velcro strap to tighten it down and get the best comfort.

u/vkgfx · 1 pointr/headphones

>How's the comfort? Do they get tiring to wear after many hours of having them on?

Bad IMO. If I'm using a good pair of headphones, I want it to feel like baby Jesus is cradling my ears. The M50x has kind of small kind of stiff pads. Replace them with the velour pads from MD or the HM5 pads for $20 and there will be a day and night difference in quality. Have you ever tried the Monoprice 8323? The overall comfort is very similar.

Nevertheless, there are many, many more comfortable headphones out there, and quite a few options in its price range.

>What's the THD? I can't seem to find that anywhere and certainly not on Audio-Technica site for some reason.

Low. You can get that info and more here.

>What kind of size they are? Over-ear or on-ear? The size of the padding from pictures seems to be showing on-ear cup, but is that right?

Like I said they're small but over-ear.

>The headphones band, specifically this metal part. I had bad experience with my old headphones and that damn thing never stood in one place on one phone, making it uneven and unpleasant to wear. Is it the case with these cans as well?

I've never had any problems with it.

>If not these, what other headphones would be worthy to look at? Pretty much the same price, I can't go much (or at all) than that. Also, no DAC/AMP/soundcard required, these need to work great on on-board sound card.

I'll be a Sennheiser fanboy like the rest of this sub and get up the HD598 for $130 on Amazon right now. It's stupidly good for that price. The SE version has a black color scheme and a better cable, and that's the only difference.

People here will recommend a DAC and amp regardless of what headphones you're using because they love buying shit and placebo effect doesn't care about headphone specs. However, both the HD598s and M50x are fairly sensitive and won't require an amplifier/DAC unless your source is terrible (which doesn't sound like the case).

I'm not surprised to see that they're popular at battlestations because this sub was riding their dick hard a year ago or so, and now that the circlejerk has moved on here, it might take a while for the hype to subside elsewhere on reddit. I don't think they sound that great and I don't like wearing them. Their build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but other people have disagreed with me there so YMMV.

u/LifelongCaboose · 1 pointr/Gaming_Headsets

Well I'll start off by saying YES open back will help you not need mic monitoring it will also add a better soundstage for audio positioning that will work better than any terrible 7.1 virtual SS or "True" 7.1(which is terrible and no one should buy any of the current headsets marketed with this gimmick). Also gaming focused isn't really ever nessasary because better sound in general will be good for gaming and will add more functionality. Also with wireless you sacrifice a fair bit a quality and you have to pay way more. If your willing to spend $300 don't even get any headset. But a pair of HD598 from Sennheiser and a Mod Mic 4.0 this set up will cost close to the same as a G933 and will be better than it in every single way by a large margin. Also for it to work on PS4 you will just need one adapter which Sennheiser sells. But if you for what ever reason want a headset still go for the Sennheiser Game One there way better than the current best wireless gaming headset the Siberia 800 and come in at about half the price. But the aforementioned adapter is still nessasary on console.

Yes and no. You need something called an audio server. A program that acts as a translator for you amp aim and your audio interface. A function that can be taken place by an actually DAW, though you don't need it. I use something called JACK, an audio server available through linux.

Yes. Some programs like Guitar Rig 5 allow you to use their after market pedal board to communicate directly with Guitar Rig 5. For other pedals, literally just hooking in a regular pedal in an option and plugging in a sudo pedal that acts as a remote to your simulated pedals is also an option (this is something I've heard of and pondered but not something I've actually tried).

First of all thanks for taking time to help me out!!
Are these the right ones? There are also the "normal" 598 (but more expensive, over 200€) and the 598Cs. I guess the difference with the 598Cs is that they are closed. But what about the ones I linked? Are these the "normal" 598 Headphones? Because it says special version. :P
I might(!) order this with the fiio e10k then, and if sound is significantly better, I'll keep them. Otherwise, they go back to amazon.
Right choice? :D
edit: apparently, the 598Cs are really cheap on other amazons (it, es etc.), so if they are not way worse, i would get them.(around 100€ and shipping) but i guess they are since they are closed?

What's your budget? A common affordable mic is a Blue Yeti, or Blue Snowball. A favorite among the gaming community is the Sennheiser HD 598, or HD 598 SE.. they are the same, but the SE are black. Then if you want those headphones but with closed backs they are now around $50 less then the open backs.. HD 598 C's. It is preferred with those headphones, to buy a headphone amp or USB DAC to go with it.. If those don't work within your budget, let me know and we can find something else! There are many options. My personal setup is Sennheiser PC-350 headset with the Mic removed, and an AKG P220 condenser mic mounted onto a Rode PSA1 desktop boom arm connected to a Behringer Q802USB Mixer.

u/jingqian9145 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Anything can be a "Reasonable Price" A rich audiophile thinks the Sennheiser Orpheus is an reasonable price. However my suggestion is to not get a headset if you plan to enjoy your audio.

Sennheiser HD598 & Modmic Combo.

However only one headset I can recommend

Sennheiser Game One because It's the HD598 with a mic slap on it. It's the cheaper option as well but the HD598 sounds subjectively better imo.

I'm seriously looking into getting that pair but have my reservations. I know with open sets, you'll have a lot of sound leakage. That concerns me when it comes to having a mic on them. I also can't just go with a desk-mic because of my keyboard.

I mainly just need a pair for gaming, this is the third time I've had issues with my hyper x cloud 2's. Thoughts?

Also, I know the 598's don't have crazy bass, but does it have bass strong enough to not leave you needing more during intense scenes in gaming? I had a pair one time that over-exaggerated all the bass in games and a pair that just didn't have the bass to throw the feeling of the game into you head.

u/ukTHISISGAMING · 1 pointr/headphones

Hi, I currently own the Hyper X Cloud II but have started to hear something vibrating/shaking inside the headset. Consequently, I'm in the market for some new headphones. After following the buyers guide I'm currently interested in the Sennheiser HD 598 Over-Ear Headphones, Audio-Technica ATH-M50X Studio Monitor Professional Headphones or the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro Headphones - 250 Ohm. Nevertheless, what's the difference in sound quality between those headphones and these headsets: Sennheiser GSP 350 Closed Back Gaming Headset, Sennheiser PC 360 Special Edition Gaming Headset, HyperX Cloud Revolver Pro Gaming Stereo Headset.

Budget: No more than £150
Source: Directly into my computer
Isolation: some (block out computer fans)
The headphones will be used exclusively at my desk.
Most of the music I hear will be from games, which varies heavily, so I want something which is okay for everything.
Overall I'm looking for something which is clear/detailed (so I can hear opponents in multiplayer games) while simultaneously sounding good for music/cinematic/single-player.

Thanking you.

EDIT: What's the difference between these: Sennheiser HD 598 Cs Closed Back and Sennheiser HD 558 High End Open Over-Ear

u/moldywhale · 1 pointr/headphones

Budget - A max of 150$

Source - My desktop's USB port

Requirements for Isolation - I would prefer to block outside noises, as long as it doesn't come at the cost of sound quality. I will be using these headphones exclusively at home.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - No

Preferred Type of Headphone - I don't want on-ear or in-ear, because they tend to hurt my ears after extended listening. I don't know enough about headphones to judge if I want an IEM or a regular over-ear headphone.

Preferred tonal balance - I prefer to listen to music in more clarity rather than amplifying the bass.

Past headphones - The only good pair of headphones I've owned are a pair of Logitech G430s. I found the sound quality good and I've never had an issue using them for extended periods of time. However, I've owned 2 pairs, and both have broken at the swivel above the earpiece with the mic (each in ~2 years), so I'm not pleased with the build quality.

Preferred Music - I listen to EDM (I think). Here are some examples of my favorites Jaytech - Gray Horizon and Jamie Matrix - Gold Rush

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - I am interested in more clarity of sound and better surround. Ideally I would like to wear a pair of headphones and feel like the whole world is playing my song.

At the moment I am considering the Sennheiser HD 598s as Amazon is offering them for less than half the price. That said, if you have any better ideas based on my information for a comparable price, I'd love to hear them!

Budget: $300~$500 CAD

Source: Looking to buy an Amp/Dac combo

Requirements for isolation: None, just for personal use in my home

Will you be using these headphones in public: No

Preferred type of headphones: Open back

Preferred tonal balance: Balanced would be nice along with a decent bass.

Past headphones: I'm currently using a pair of Kingston HyperX Cloud gaming headset. Mic quality is subpar and and the sound is not too good for my liking.

Preferred music: Indie/Rock, Alternative, EDM, Hip-Hop. (I'm pretty much open to all genres of music but above is what I usually listen to).

  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone Around-Ear.

  • Preferred tonal balance - Warm bass to neutral. The treble spikes on the DT 990's scared me away though I've never actually tried them out in person.

  • Past headphones - V-Moda Crossfade LP (had these for 5 years; still using them to this day, but I want to get some open cans to go along with them), AKG K240 (I ordered these on a whim, and had to return them because they weren't compatible with my mic. Nice sound signature though), Turtle Beach Earforce X12 headset (These sound and feel fine. The mic works well, but the build quality was terrible. The plastic extenders snapped on both sides within a year of use).

  • Preferred Music - Hip Hop, Rock, Indie, Instrumental, Classical

  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up -

  1. Open headphones (since I already own a good pair of closed)

  2. Felt/velvet/velour earpads for extended use

  3. Compatible with a V-Moda BoomPro Mic

  4. I really liked the AKG K240's style and feel when I was wearing them. They felt very lite weight, like they were almost floating over my head. And using only one cup at a time felt very natural and secure. The individual arms felt very flexible. I liked that a lot, but this isn't a make or break requirement as I've been using Crossfade LPs for years and still love them.

From my own (limited) research, I've got my eye on Sennheiser's HD 598 and HD 558, but I would have to buy an aftermarket 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter. I don't mind the price of an adapter, but I don't want it to be cumbersome. And are the HD598's better by $40? They seem to nearly be the same exact headphone.

Get yourself a Blue Yeti or even a Snowball and a decent pair of dedicated headphones like the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x or Sennheiser HD-598...and you'll have far, far better audio and recording quality than some all-in-one garbage headset. Not only will your games sound better, but movies and music will sound much better as well.

Hope it helps.

I'm looking for something to replace the Koss Portapro/sportapro as my main headset because of their constant breaking, and hope to find something possibly even a bit higher in sound quality. I'm worried about wasting money on something worse, since things double or even triple the price of portapros seem to be always blown out of the water in terms of sound quality.

The two I'm looking at now are https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0126HISOO/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 and https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

Hey, r/headphones! I'm looking for a quality pair of headphones I can wear at home. I think I've narrowed it down to the Sennheiser 185s or the [Sennheiser 598s](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0126HISOO/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_ETiExb1F3K62Z]. I can't seem to find any reviews for the 185s, let alone comparison reviews. I like the idea of wireless headphones with a dock that plugs into my entertainment system, so I don't want to write these off just yet. What do you guys think? Is there maybe a better option for me that I'm missing?

Budget - I'd prefer to stay around $200, but I'm flexible. I have a $100 credit on Amazon, so they definitely need to be sold on there.

Source - I have two different sound systems I alternate between. In my living room, I have a ps3 set up that I put YouTube playlists on. In my bedroom, I have a smart DVD player and my laptop that both plug into my soundbar. Both rooms have optical and mini jacks.

Requirements for Isolation - Mild. I have less-than-great hearing, so I like the clarity headphones offer, and my boyfriend likes to play his own music/Skyrim on his side of the apartment. Bleeding is fine, but we can't keep competing with our sound systems.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - Nope.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Circumaural, no exceptions. I wear glasses so I already get headaches and supraaural headphones make it worse. My ear canals are small and I have piercings that make IEMs a nightmare.

Preferred tonal balance - Crisp, natural sound with a wide soundstage. I don't need a lot of bass enhancement.

Past headphones - Nothing of quality, I tell you hwat.

Preferred Music - Chillstep, zen, trance, acoustic, meditation music, binaural beats, etc. Pretty low-intensity stuff.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - I want clear, detailed sound without ear fatigue. I have some different IEMs and I can't wear any of them for more than about 45 minutes.

I mostly sit in a variety of places to do homework, study or read, but I do like to cook a lot and would love something I could walk around in. The flexibility that comes with the Bluetooth headphones is really attractive to me, but unless I hear from someone who has them I just don't think I can commit.

u/Pyronic_Chaos · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Sennheiser HD 598 with an Antlion Mod Mic.

I like open ear for gaming and ambient sound (noone can really hear your headset if your volumes are reasonable), but for private listening I have ATH-M50X (works awesome for planes/office/walking around)

Also, are these two headphones the exact same (as in both are the special edition)?

I know that the second one is not listed as the "Special Edition", but it seems to be the same headphone. If anyone knows, please let me know as the second one is about $50 cheaper! Also, are these good headphones for gaming on a high-end PC? Do I need an AMP/DAC? Also if I do, is there one you would recommend for this headphone? Thanks.

I see. I consider something like RHA T10i more of an earbud when I hear IEMs I think https://pro.ultimateears.com/customizer/#!/id/11 (I have a pair of these). These are really meant for professional application. It is very hard for me to judge headphones I have never heard. I can objectively tell you that the 7506s are very good, especially if you are writing/recording any kind of music. I would stay away from any type of headphone that prefixed "DJ". They tend to have a boost from 50-100hz, which can be very damaging to your hearing at loud volumes over an extended periods of time. I don't know anything about the Fidlio's, but I go back to my original statement of going with a trusted professional audio company, and the whole marketing v. price. I almost guarantee that Sennheiser HD 598 Special Edition Over-Ear Headphones - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0126HISOO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_mFLjxbZ3BGZE6 are much better than the X2s and are half the price. Here.

The Sennheiser Hd598 is probably one of the best middle-range options there are. They are very comfortable with good build quality. They have a very clear sound to them with tight bass (does not overwhelm). The only con is that they do not isolate well, but if you use them at home, this shouldn't be a problem. OH and playing Fps games with these are great, you can pinpoint sounds really well.

If you want a closed option, check out the Brainwavz Hm5, they also have a very balanced sound and leather cups that are to die for. But if you don't mind no isolation, go for the Hd598.

For me my grandma tripped on the headset cord and pulled it out of my console (yes, she's fine, don't worry :) ) and it started making static noises whenever I adjusted the volume. I simply contacted them and within a week had a replacement shipped and en route. If I were you I would email their support (sometimes phone can be faster) and get it replaced. I have since moved my setup into a Blackout Blue Yeti mic and a pair of Sennheiser HD 598 SEs and I find it to be way better than a headset if you have the scratch for it. If you get your headset replaced, sell the new one (and maybe the old one too) and put it towards this.

u/nebraskapc · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

Oh wow, never seen them before. I've used the brown 598's and 558's and couldn't tell the difference between them at all, but people swear up an down that the 598's are better. Tested both when I had my Schitt stack (I believe I sold the stack to you??). 100% couldn't tell them apart.

I own a pair of 558 at work and a pair at home. Ordered a Cloud HyperX II from Massdrop last year and after 4 months of no delivery cancelled my order. They refunded the money and the next day the Loud II were at my door. They told me to just keep em, so now I don't need the 558s :/

u/Makegooduseof · 1 pointr/headphones

You didn't mention a mic, but you did mention VOIP. Do you use a built-in mic in your PC, or do you have a separate mic, or do you need a built-in mic on the headphones themselves?

Assuming you already have a separate mic, and you don't need one on the headphones themselves, I recommend the HD598 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-HD598-Special-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0126HISOO/). These are a joy to wear for hours on end, and they're also really light.

If you need a mic on the headphone, I'll have to leave that to someone else to reply.

Looking for an upgrade to my ATH-M50s with a better sound stage. They are great for work/travel with the noise isolation from being closed back, but I'm looking for something a bit better for home use. I'm also looking for something a bit comfortable to wear for long periods, as the ATH-M50, and my AKG headphones are both tight on my head and I can only wear them for an hour or so before needing a break.

  • Budget - $200-$350

  • Source - Fiio E17 Alpen, possibly buying Schiit Stack in future for my home setup.

  • Requirements for Isolation - Using at home - Gaming, Music.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Over Ear, Open Back. Looking for comfort and quality

  • Preferred tonal balance - Heavy bass but with clear Highs and Mids.

  • Past headphones - Audio Technica ATH-M50, AKG K81DJ, Corsair Vengeance 2100 (gaming only)

  • Preferred Music - Electronic, Trance, Chillstep, EDM

  • Usage - Mainly listening to HQ audio/FLAC, or while gaming.

I've looked at the Sennheiser HD598, and I'm not sure how much better they would be. The Sennheiser HD600 are a bit out of my price range right now. I wonder if it's too late to get in on the Massdrop Sennheiser HD6XX deal? I'd definitely consider other models.

I also rather like the Audio Technica wing designs. I will want to try them on to see if they are comfortable though. I've seen the "rubber band" trick to get them to stay firmly. The ATH-AD900X might be an option, but I'd appreciate other recommendations.

I'm having computer issues. I'm hearing buzzing/humming and clicks and shit through my headset. I've been trying to fight it, but I'd learned that it's most likely only going to be solved by getting a DaC and amp. I'll also grab a headset at one point.

I'm not the biggest audiophile. I don't listen to music or play my games in high volume at all. I do however dislike this stuff I hear.

For a DaC, is this generally pretty good? https://www.amazon.ca/Fiio-Olympus-Headphone-Amplifier-Black/dp/B00LP3AMC2 It seems good to me, and it's not expensive.

On top of that, I'll want a good headset too. I can wait for a while and use the one I have currently. https://www.amazon.ca/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0126HISOO?ie=UTF8&me=&ref_=olp_product_details I hear great things about this one (plus I missed the prime day sale on them, so I got to wait longer I guess), but I think I'd rather closed. My wife and I just did this our self a few months ago. We spend hours gaming each day and found a great combo using Sennheiser HD 598, Antlion Modmic, and a simple USB audio adapter.

  • The headset has great comfort for long gaming sessions, it also has an open ear design so we can easily communicate with each other (Not perfect for everyone if you have a lot of background noise).
  • The mic was a simple solution for us because we like having it attached to our headset and didn't want to have a mic setup on the desk.

We spent a while doing our research across multiple subs and obviously everyone's situation is different.
u/nhuynh50 · 1 pointr/Vive

Get a set of decent cans and never look back. If you want something you can wear for hours on end without hurting your ears or causing your ears to sweat I suggest a set of open back headphones. The open back design is not only comfortable but it really expands the sound stage and ups the presence factor 2 fold.

For LANs, I recommend the Logitech G430s. For home, I recommend something like the Sennheisher HD 598s if you have a large budget and play alone in a room (due to them being open back) and pair it with a dedicated mic like a Blu Yeti. I, personally, would stray away from both of the headphones you have listed due to the fact that they are both marketed towards gamers, and generally, headsets of the sort will be of poorer quality (more on that here). If you're on a tight budget, but still want high quality sound, I'd recommend a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50Xs' with the Blu Snowball. I also saw you mention the kinds of headsets used by professional gamers. Pros usually are sponsored by certain brands, and in turn, use the brands gear (such as mice, keyboards, headphones, etc.). Additionally, pros generally use 2 separate pairs of headphones, one pair of in-ear monitors, and one pair for noise cancellation. The pair used for noise cancellation is generally one own of their sponsors. As you continue to search for a pair, please consider what I have mentioned, and feel free to ask me any questions.

Hey guys, I'm thinking about replacing my Skullcandy Slyr headset with a modmic and headphones. I'm kind-of between a few different options based on what I've found from various threads:

Audio Technica ATH500X / 900X

Sennheiser HD 598

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x

--Info--

Budget: $150 or less (preferably less)

Source: Windows PC

Isolation Requirements: No requirements, I'll be using these at home

Preferred Type: Full sized, over ear, whatever you call them.

Preferred Tonal Balance: I like it a little heavy on the bass (but am unsure if I'll have to give this up since I play a lot of Overwatch and I think I need the soundstage?).

Past Headphones: Skullcandy Slyr

Preferred Music: Varies a lot, but a lot of Imagine Dragons

Looking To Improve: Sound quality.

I'm unsure about this open-backed thing (especially since I've heard the sound can bleed into a mic such as the modmic) and undecided on a soundcard because I'm still trying to figure how this virtual surround sound thing works. I wasn't going to get an amp because I don't like listening to music very loud. Thoughts?

Sennheiser HD598's are pretty widely recommended.

I personally use this pair of Sony headphones and can recommend those for a pretty balanced sound all around, with a good soundstage for games. But they do have a very shallow earcup so do be aware if your ears stick out a bit.

Pairing those with an external mic will give you a much much better sound than gaming headphones and better mic quality as well (and I find much more comfortable as well)

u/jninja119 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

On my personal rig I use the [audiotechnica ATH M50Xs](Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVLUR86/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_J9fIybVCJPWFD) and they sound amazing, I also use a [blue yeti mic](Blue Yeti USB Microphone - Blackout Edition https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N1YPXW2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_55fIybEAPYH7B) and it comes out clear crisp and clean. To keep my desk from lots of chaos I use a [boom arm](RODE PSA1 Swivel Mount Studio Microphone Boom Arm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D7UYBO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_l7fIybE7YH913).
( I don't use that boom arm personally, but for someone who wants a good quality boom arm, that's the one.)

Now all this stuff will give you the best experience for a separate mic and headphone combo (well best experience that won't cost thousands of dollars) but if you don't want to use the yeti on a boom arm and just want a headset, get the M50Xs and get an [attachment microphone ](Antlion Audio ModMic 4.0 Attachable Boom Microphone - Omni-Directional with Mute Switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T6XUL8S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_bRagIybFHB6Q2N) instead. This mic has better quality than pretty much any mic built into headsets since the mic tends to be where they cut corners.

As a person who owns dozens of pairs of gaming headphones, I would choose my audiotechnicas with an external mic over them all. I have used Sades GW, Corsair Voids, Turtle Beaches 800Xs, Astro a40s, Logitech g930s, Tritton 720+s and many cheap headsets as well. Get the m50Xs, I would also recommend [sennheiser hd598](Sennheiser HD 598 Special Edition Over-Ear Headphones - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0126HISOO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_UkgIybSZ1SBNW) headphones. The truth about all those gaming features (and this is my opinion, as an owner of all the aforementioned headphones) is that high quality sound is better than fake 7.1 surround.
