I got a pair of Sennheiser PC 166s on a recommendation from a guildmate. They're bar-none the most comfortable pair of headphones I've ever worn. Pretty excellent sound quality too. Only downside is they're a little pricey, but you can probably find a good deal of them if you look (found mine for 50% off on Amazon one lucky day).
I do miss the Darth Vader impression I could do with my old crappy ones, but my guildmates don't.
Sennheiser PC 166. I never purchase anything but Sennheiser. Microphone quality is great and the headphones are great (although if I am going to be out in public I opt for my Sony MDR-V150's since they are stupid cheap and provide great quality).

The Sennheiser PC166 USB headset has blown me away; the headphones a crazy comfortable, I could probably never wear them forever and the mic is indestructible. I bought one for my little brother for Christmas and the mic has better sound quality than my phone, by a long shot.
Also It has good localized sound so people can't hear what is playing on you're headphones even when it's really really loud. Surround sound headsets seem to have trouble with noise localization.
I went through the same searching for a headset for a long time, the same thing you're doing, I tried some turtle beach headphones and was really not impressed the but the Sennheiser I've had for 6 months now is wonderful.
