The new addition is the Urbanite XL, I managed to get it at less than a third of the local MSRP. Which is actually more or less the current price it fetches on Amazon in the US, so those in America are definitely in luck. [Edit: apparently they've even dropped by a bit more than when I last checked, $93 for those interested)

I’ve only had them for a day up till now, and have been using it with both my FiiO X3ii and the S6 to better compare it with the others. Initial impressions are that it definitely sounds rather laid-back and polite, and certainly on the warm side. Although Sennheiser marketing seems to focus exclusively on its bass, to me it seems like it actually doesn’t hit as hard as my HD650, and they both extend to about the same level. I can tell there’s some treble roll off going on pretty early, although it also sounds like it comes back at some point at a high enough frequency, on cymbals and the higher pitches or organs for example. I still like the tonality of the HD650 better though, or maybe I’m just more used to it. It also doesn’t have the same level of detail. But these actually all suit how I want to use it most, while I’m on campus at the library and just casually listening.

Build quality feels perfect as always from Sennheiser, and it’s actually pretty hefty from all the metal components. One complaint is the ear cups, they’re a tad too small to be genuinely circumaural, and it presses on the top and bottom of my ears a bit, which might be a problem after a few hours. I've always liked Sennheiser’s oval designs, because to me they feel better to wear than the round ones from AKG or Hifiman, so it would’ve been great if they had continued with that.

And now I feel like I can finally sell my ATH-MSR7 without regrets. I originally got it as a portable pair and also to see how well I would take to a slightly brighter than neutral sound signature. Needless to say, it hasn’t gone well, and it’s been used a lot less than I’d like.

As an aside, this photo is making me feel a bit like a total Sennheiser fanboy, after all IEMs aside all my headphones are now by them. Maybe I should try the IE80 too sometime…

BTW, they are only $93 on amazon right now!

So, my strongest recommendation is going to be to get a regular headset and run either the integrated mic if you're on a laptop, or use a cheapo USB mic. For whatever reason, headsets are more expensive for decent quality fidelity.

I'm going to circlejerk Sennheiser: $50, $70, also 70$

And AudioTechnica: 50$

Especially if you're planning on streaming, you can get a great non-mic OEs for midrange price, and splurge on the mic.

Well, its a Sennheiser, which may sound similar to your older set and you were looking for a change, but there is the Urbanite XL.

More expensive would be the Sennheiser Momentum 2, but they are definitely bassy.

Budget: $275 CAD (non-flexible) - probably buying from amazon.ca or local shop

Audio Source: Desktop dac/amp which is plugged into desktop computer. (If it helps: my motherboard is an ASRock AB350M Pro-4)

Requirements for Isolation: None? Headphones will be used solely at home. I do have a roommate but when I'm listening to music/playing games I tend to have my door closed.

Preferred Type: Over-ear/full-sized

Preferred Tonal Balance: I enjoy bass and mids, but I don't want something that will be too bassy as to drown out the highs.

Past Headphones: Sony MDR-RF985R. I enjoyed what seemed to be a fairly neutral sound profile. Strongly disliked interference causing static because they were RF Wireless headphones. They were good when the sound was clear though (especially since I got them for only $80 CAD).

Preferred Music: Basically everything: classical (e.g. "Concertino bianco: 1. Con intenerimento) , classic rock (Pink Floyd, Rush, etc), game soundtracks, pop(?) songs such as "Primo" by RAF Camora, "Soldaten 2.0" by Kontra K.

Improvements: I would like to improve on my audio experience in general. No more static, much better sound in general, and higher quality headphone construction. I will be buying a simple dac/amp (probably Schiit Fulla 2 or FiiO K5).

So far, I'm considering either the DT 770 (Pro 80) or the DT 990 (Pro). I was looking at the Sennheiser Urbanite XL as well but I'm not too sure they fit my wants? I'm definitely open to suggestions, especially if they're cheaper!

Also, can you plug headphones with a 3.5mm connector into the 3.5mm line-out of a dac/amp which has only a 6.3mm headphone-out (like in the Schiit Fulla 2 for example)? If not, I can source an adapter so 6.3mm is not a requirement.

Make sure that you check the Amazon Warehouse. There may be other deals buried there.

The Audio Technica ATH M40x is quite popular in that price range, however, they have been recommended with the Brainwavz HM5 Pads. Another option is the Sennheiser Urbanite(On Ear), which is a little bassier than the M40x, but, in my opinion, looks a little nicer. You can also do some browsing around the sub, and visit/comment on the Daily Purchase Advise thread.

Happy hearing!

I've been looking for a decent price replacement for my late Sennheiser HD428's and thought today would be the perfect day to pick one. Problem is there are too many options and its hard to pick one without hearing any of them as sound quality and balance can be subjective.

I'm looking for a closed over the ear headphones that leans heavier on the bass side but hopefully without being too muddy or distorted, though I realize I have to sacrifice some sound quality in the mids and highs to get the bass I want. I'm looking to spend no more than $200. From the recommendations Google doc on the sidebar I've narrowed my search to Vmoda Crossfade M100, Sennheiser Urbanite XL, or AudioTechnica ATH-WS99.

Basically I'm just looking to see if anyone has any experience with these headphones and can offer and suggestions.

Sennheiser has a Beats competitor, 2 actually. One is called the [Urbanite,] (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Urbanite-XL-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B00M3NZKA2) which sound like ass but look pretty great. The other is called the [Momentum,] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AZZNXOK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1427837701&sr=8-1&keywords=momentum&dpPl=1&dpID=41PhwEt071L&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SY200_QL40) which sound pretty good but don't look as good as the Urbanites IMO.

u/rmw156 · 1 pointr/headphones

I would try the Sennheiser Urbanite XL if it's available in your country. Here is a review of them.

Im not sure on the isolation, but they are closed back so there will be some.

u/mac404 · 1 pointr/headphones

Something like the Urbanite would be a better option if you're okay with on-ear for $85. They extend surprisingly well into the sub-bass. There is also an over-ear version (Urbanite XL) for about $115. It has a bit less sub-bass compared to the non-XL, but still way more than the headphones you bought.

In this price range, closed-back headphones are going to give you more bass (and especially more sub-bass). The headphones you bought actually have an elevated mid-upper bass, but they roll off dramatically in the sub-bass, which is probably why you don't like them (I imagine it feels like a wimpy punch, without any low-end rumble).

I have a few updates to suggest for the Closed-Back headphones guide:

  1. The Urbanite XL are listed as 125$ headphones, however they go for 70$ on Amazon.

  2. The Creative Aurvana Live! are listed as 75$ and with a slightly wrong name(L!ve), they go for 57$ on Amazon.

  3. The Sennheiser HD598Cs are listed as 125$ headphones but currently go for 170$ on Amazon which is the only store I've found them on.

  4. The Audio Technica ATH M50X are listed at 130$ and currently go for 150$ on every store I found them (Amazon and BHPhotoVideo for example).

I wear glasses too. I use the Superlux hd668b headphones with replacement earpads. I don't remember what I got exactly, but something like this. I can wear these for multiple hours. The 668b are made of plastic and are fairly cheap quality but are really lightweight as a result. They get sweaty for me during long sessions in the summer, but are really comfortable otherwise. I bought my 668b and replacement pads on sale, so a bargain for me, maybe not so much at $67 usd. Decent/good sound quality, semi-open back is a plus as well.

I also use a pair of Sennheiser Urbanite XL for on-the-go but they're not quite as comfortable. But I like closed-back and a more V-shaped sound when I'm out and about.

u/Brent_Fournier69 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

The Urbanite XL I've heard good things about. They're a bit pricey at $229 CAD but I've yet to hear anything bad about them. They have tons of bass while still having clear vocals and highs.

What about urbanites?

u/oakleysds · 1 pointr/aspergers

I have Urbanite XL and they work fairly well for me. They are just passive noise cancellation but it dulls the noise enough to make things easier. They also have a nice warm bass, if that's something you like with music.

(looking for something with an inline mic that works on iPhone)

Budget - $150ish but could go higher for the perfect headphones.

Source - iPhone, could consider buying a DAC later if it would add to the experience

Requirements for Isolation - Would prefer a good amount of isolation but could live with an open back also as I will use at my desk, on airplanes, and outside (no perfect option here).

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - Yes, coffee shops and parks, not worried about noise leaking that much.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-sized, closed (willing to consider others though)

Preferred tonal balance - Warm, heavier bass

Past headphones - Have only used stock iPhone earbuds for the past 5 years or so, use a cheap meelectronics in ear while working out.

Preferred Music - In order- alternative/indie rock, hip hop, hard rock, prog. metal.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - I really just want better sound while listening to music and working or walking around, but still need to be able to have a mic as I take phone calls constantly for my job.

Have been looking at these but don't like that people complain about weak highs:
