My favorite recently published short stories are A Witch's Guide to Escape: A Practical Compendium of Portal Fantasies by Alix Harrow, Carouseling by Rich Larson, and Tool Using Mimics by Kij Johnson. I found them by regularly reading Clarkesworld and Apex magazines. I also regularly find great speculative stories in Lightspeed and Shimmer. I found all of these magazines while searching for places to submit short stories on Duotrope and read them both for personal enjoyment and to learn what sort of stories are currently selling.
As far as classic short stories go, my favorite writers are Ray Bradbury, Flannery O'Connor, and HP Lovecraft. I have short story collections for each of them. I'd also recommend 3x33, a compilation of short stories which features three stories for each writer it includes. It's a great way to study how some of the best short story writers use the form.
