You should check out Soft Apocalypse by Will McIntosh.

It starts out not longer after the present day, and follows a group of survivors through an apocalypse. But this apocalypse is one where technological advancement still happens, and the rich are still rich, it's just that the poor are poorer and there are more and more of them.

It's a striking story with great characters, and shows what a slow decline would really feel like.

There's a scene in Soft Apocalypse that still haunts me.

>So this, among many other really not good reasons, causes the U.S. military to react VERY violently against any country that even PRETENDS to want to use any other currency to buy oil other than U.S. dollars.

Iraq and Libya.

Also, can you imagine what it would be like with trailer parks full of the dead fatties who have to use the electric shopping carts at Walmart.

The words "soft apocalypse" come to mind.

  • Parts of the story are a bit like a dating book, but enjoyable. But the idea of a slow moving apocalypse is very realistic, and pretty much certain, assuming we don't have an event that triggers a faster one first.
