I'd recommend a book called Songcrafters' Coloring Book: The Essential Guide to Effective and Successful Songwriting

He mostly talks about an "eyes wide open" approach to songwriting. Sounds a little weird, but really what he is doing is making you aware of all the choices you have / can choose and to make sure you pick the choice rather than just letting it happen, i.e. the more awareness you have the better your ability and consistency to craft songs.

He talks alot about song crafting, direction, communication and all sorts. Things like creative process is touched on briefly, but mostly how that is separate from the song crafting process. What I do like about it tho is he does not stifle the creative side of it. Nor does he correlate well crafted songs = good songs or successful songs.
