I've never worked anywhere that hast them already at every public computer. That's kind of amazing. How many public computers do you have?

So, I've seen a few different things, and I definitely have opinions about each and every one, lol. Ranked in least favorite to most:

Big, big no: "Bring your own headphones" is such a terrible POV for so many reasons and every argument I've heard in favor of this policy could be made for basically every item we check out. Supervisors were uninterested in hearing that, however.

NOPE, part 1: Cheap earbud option. 1, it's not accessible (like you mentioned, hearing aids). 2, the quality is usually horrible. 3, they're usually really uncomfortable after a few minutes, let alone for longer. 4, have you ever had to untangle like 25 pairs of these? CONSTANTLY?! Maaassive waste of staff time. So many libraries are understaffed anyway...I'd rather be helping people.

NOPE, part 2: ...Charging for cheap earbuds. No matter what public library I've worked, and the financial status of many of its patrons, whenever we'd had something to sell (headphones, storage devices to save to, etc), people seemed affronted by it no matter how we priced it. Sometimes people would happily pay, glad it was even an option. But most grudgingly made the purchase or went, "No thanks," and left.

Love: Headphones for checkout. Headphones can't leave the building, no time limit (or time limit, which TBH, is a headache in a public library setting), due at closing. People seem to like this. Depending on time, wipe them down whenever a pair is returned or provide wipes for people to do themselves before use. I've seen a variety of headphones for this, usually not over-the-ear but still padded. I'd say Sony's are pretty reliable, and seem to last the longest. They usually run us about $20 each. No volume control on them, unfortunately. But I think they do make versions with, for under $30.

Croatia. In my city particularly there is no dedicated headphone store. And I see only 2 types regularly:

  1. Generic earbuds/iems that come with phones. These are by far the most common, most of them white. Some of them could be Earpods, but most likely it's the Samsung buds because Croatia is Samsung territory through and through.
  2. Sony/JVC/Panasonic generic "Extra Bass" on-ears. They all have the same design, and are available at a price of about $20 at EVERY general electronics store. These.

    Exceptions:

I have seen one high-schooler wearing a V-Moda Crossfade once.

Another girl that had the Koss Porta Pro, which had to be ordered on purpose because there is no local Koss distributor in Croatia.

And a 45-50ish guy wearing the Master & Dynamic MH40.

Oh, there was only one guy I saw in the bus from time to time, wearing a bright, red pair of Beats. The only other Beats', almost exclusively, were worn by the occasional black tourists.

seriously, I have these with the inline mic. They work great, are inexpensive, pack up, sound crystal clear and I sound crystal clear in chat.
